The slowest startup ever...

You guys are crazy, lol.

I know it isn't a hardware issue because when I press CTRL + ALT + DEL after typing my password, my CPU usage on the task manager averages 6% and there's always like 700MB RAM unused.

Anyways, I guess I'll get rid of norton and give AVG a shot.

It is Norton, it is not just our opinion, but see slashdot.org where such discussions as this one go in to the thousands of posts.

I run XP in Linux sometimes, say every few months, I give XP 128mb of ram only, still faster than my flatmate's PC with 1G of ram. Our PCs are pretty close in specifications. The only difference as I run a virtual machine is, viruses don't bother me, his PC has Norton and host of other programs to protect his PC, which slows it down. Do the msconfig thing also as suggested.

You get AVG Anti Virus and AVG Spyware or something, install both. There's lots of good free firewalls available for download also

run chkdsk /f /r .Ive found windows file system goes pear shaped with all the power shortages I am having.

Norton is the problem

Norton removes the virus from your pc by making your pc so slow that it bores the virus to death. :D

As long as Norton isn't installed your PC will be just fine :D

Norton - the common denominator - jeez, it even recognizes itself as a virus!
AVG or Avast! does the job with FREE updates daily...
IMO, if you have to pay for an AV package, the company is 99.9999% likely to be in cahoots with the authors of virusses - else how would they make money flogging their stuff and updates?

Check your motherboard manufacturers website and download the latest available chipset drivers and install it.

I'm no expert but I've seen PCs without (correct) chipset drivers slowing to a crawl.

Run AVG (http://www.grisoft.com) instead of Norton

and SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) to check if you have any Adware. Free BTW.

Also use AutoRuns, Process Explorer and RootkitRevealer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/securityutilities.mspx) - Previously from SysInternals to see what is lurking behind the scenes. AutoRuns tells you exactly what is being loaded on system startup/logon. Process Explorer tells you about processes and Rootkit sees if anything is being naughty. Other potential problems are Network shares that the system is trying to connect to, All of those quickstarts (MS Office, OpenOffice, WinZip etc) and some IE toolbars.

Also, load a firewall other then Norton such as Kerio etc.

OK, I checked out that AVG site, but it says US$52, yet some people are saying it's free. Which is it?

If I download it, do I have to pay?

The admins of this site need to put up a "How to get rid of Norton" thread. I spent a good 1hr 30min trying to evict it from my PC.

That said, my PC has gone from an 8 minute start up to less than 30 seconds since I got rid of that lousy program. Note to self, never touch Norton or Symantec again. That's a life lesson. How the hell are they even a multi-million dollar company anyway?

Well, my boot up times -

(Dualboot)

Unbuntu 7.04 : 1min 20secs
Win2k : 3min 55secs.

The only things that load with windows are avg, zonealarm, and my newly added weather/calender widget. I think the widgets have added considerable time to my bootup time.

msconfig takes care of the unesscessary and unwanted startup junk.

...
if you have norton on your pc you have problems

Pity it was too late for me, im always crashing and its all thanks to a certain processe ( namely ccApp ). After looking extensively i found out this belongs to norton.

NOD32 i find is very good and its SA afaik
