The Starfield thread

If you've got a low-upper / mid-range PC (i.e. pretty close to top end 4/5 years ago), I found Hardware Unboxed's optimised settings to help quite a bit. Good balance between getting some extra frames while still making things look really pretty. For reference, I have a RTX 2080 and play on 1440p.

I also had to re-enable v-sync (as fast) in the Nvidia settings (off in-game), which also helped quite a bit.

I'll save you the video (good watch if you're interested in what the settings actually do):

So the gunplay is fantastic but there's some minor Bethesda annoyances that slow the pace of the game down. Specifically around inventory management, following characters during quests etc. Don't want to get too much into it to avoid spoiling it but it's still a great game...
Ya, inventory management is rubbish, like every Bethesda game. Kinda nuts how they can work for so long on a game like this, just like Skyrim - hundreds if not thousands of hours by many, many people - and think through all of that 'yes, this works well'. Another annoyance is the absolute uselessness of the on-planet map. Just utterly pointless. I can understand completely uncharted planets somewhat, but for cities?

Anyway, fun game. :p

Some random thoughts/tips:

- Prioritise the Lair of the Mantis side mission. Reward is worth it, especially relatively early game
- Get a boost pack quickly if you can by following the main questline until it unlocks (not long). Makes traversing planets much easier and faster, since there's no other way but foot to do it as far as I've found yet
- Fast travel in space with your scanner instead of going through the painful multiple menus (press F in the cockpit -> find destination -> travel). Also fast travel via your mission list (option is called 'set course for X') if you've been to the planet before
- Get pilot level 1 skill quickly - makes spaceship battles much easier and more fun as you get control of thrusters
- As others have said - use companions as pack mules
- Be careful not to get stranded far away from your ship while being overburdened, as you then can't fast travel back to your ship. I picked up ~300 helium at a facility on a random planet, and given they weigh something like 0.5 mass for each one, I was somewhat overburdened immediately. I think your CO2 depletes way faster the more overburdened you are (not 100% sure but think so)
- Assign weapons and medpacks to your favourites so you access it via the quick menu (Q on PC by default) and with shortcuts
- In addition to your regular cargo hold on your ship - look for the captain's locker for an extra 40 mass storage space
- Sleep frequently for health replenishment and extra XP buff (the latter also available from food/drinks like alien tea and shepherd's pie)
- Mine asteroids for resources when you're just flying around space (just shoot them and collect it - has a neat little icon to make it easier to spot)
- You collect inorganic material like iron with your cutter, but open vents of argon you collect by pressing 'E' on PC and whatever the equivalent of interact is on Xbox - lots of people miss this
- If you're like me and immediately get side-tracked with side quests/collecting/exploring random planets, don't fall in that trap just yet when you start. Prioritise finishing the main quest 'Into the Unknown' - I won't spoil anything but it adds a lot to the gameplay and the plot at the right time

TLDR Starfield (according to the reviewer) is NOT an RPG with shooting tacked on but instead a looter shooter with RPG bits tacked on..... is he wrong?

Yes.

One thing one finds to be true is that when one looks for reviews which match one's own opinions, one will find them and feel vindicated. This is called confirmation bias.

The game is not perfect, but it's a good RPG game in that you really do determine the role you want to play and play it accordingly. There is also the looter/shooter aspect to the game.

For the people with 40 series GPUs, I see the mod that adds frame generation is available DRM free now.

Going purely by what they did with F04 which already almost was more looter shooter than RPG.... I would not be at all surprised if they kept going and Starfield being even less of an RPG.

Yea but you haven't played the game so your opinion is literally irrelevant.

Come back once you've played it.

He cant, probably too poor to (sub to gamepass/buy the game) and doesn't even have a system capable to run it either. Comes across as someone who reeks of jealousy.

Edit: And just b4 someone comes and say I am "Money shaming", I am too poor to buy a 1070+ or pay for pre-release. So stuck on console (FPS is Something I hate on console) and have to wait for Gamepass Release. <-- Nothing wrong admitting your shortcomings.

@bwana please can we get this guy out of here?
He clearly has no interest in the game, he just trolls incessantly to the point that others have stopped posting because they're fed up with his constant nonsense.
Except I have not trolled yet, I have at worst made fun of the game... not the players except for when they decided it was a good idea to start attacking me instead of my arguments. You are projecting.

It always struck me that modders adding DRM are working against their own interests....
It was always going to get cracked, but I just checked his Patreon, assuming all of the members are the lowest tier he is making 800k this month.

This is your problem.... you think I place so much value in the game that I could get envious of players able to play it on ultra settings..... I really don't and have seen nothing so far second hand that makes it enticing to me... and none of you have managed to convince me to be envious.

How many skills and ranks are in the game? What level would you need to be to max out your skill tree? How many main missions, factional missions, side missions and activities? How many characters can you interact with?

Answer this and then come back and tell us whether you think it's a looter shooter. Until then kindly remove yourself from here...

Or just plain ignored.... imagine thinking your service so valuable people need to pay you for it and finding out they can live without it.... then blaming them for somehow harming you.

Ego's are weird man.
