The Starfield thread

Starting to step away from Starfield
It's an okay game and have been having fun with it, but I feel for me the problem is that the entire time I have been playing I have not met one legitimately interesting or unique character.

They all make me think of the typical MMORPG NPC that is just there to give you a quest. They are all just so generic and I don't give crap about any of them, even after 'that' happens in the main quest - which I am not even going to finish, because it's not a good story. Completely by the numbers.

The colony building is also just bad. It's like they learnt nothing from Fallout 4. It's not fun to do and just infuriating

The gunplay is also just Fallout 4 with a boost pack. It's a literal copy - no differences. Do better.

Will probably still play a bit every once in a while, but Elder Scrolls or Fallout captivating this ain't
Now that I have Gamepass there are a lot better games to play
Geez you're hard to please?!

Also the only person in dozens and dozens of reviews and fans giving their criticism that doesn't like the gunplay... pretty much everyone says its way better than Fallout and I totally agree with them all.. but hey you do you..lol.

Heck this game has its fair share of flaws and definitely isnt a 10/10 game or even a groundbreaking type game but it's much more fun than you make it out to be be...and geez you've been negative about this game on here in every post of yours..even before the game even launched if I'm not mistaken? Meh.

I love the gun fights. Even though I think I have crappy guns. Reminds me of Crysis. So far I enjoy most of the game, specially the gun fights.

If i have to nitpick and throw a hissy fit, The things that I find annoying, but not a deal breaker, has more to do with immersion, or rather things that are on my wish list for a game like this.

1. The plants feel lifeless. Walking through plants is like walking through some jpegs. There is no interaction or movement. Plant movements from wind and air is not noticeably and stiff.

2. No birds or bugs. You can hear birds or bugs when in planty areas, but there is no sign of life.

3. Environmental sound does not match the scenes or what you see. Now and then someone did a lot of effort adding sounds to drains, gutters, rusty pipes. But then there are crowd sounds with echos and reverb that does not match the location.

4. Loading screens entering/exiting stores and buildings in cities is so decade ago, and size of stores or building do not match the visual size as approached from outside.

5. Water looks really bad. Because water and plant life is a rarity, it is something I would have made sure is exceptionally well done.

6. Dust and air particles. I think this is what they tried to achieve with the colour grading. It works to some degree, but feel it is missing that "I am in space" vibe. Massive expanse. You a just a tiny dot. Death Stranding really nailed this.

7. Also where the option to float around in space tied to your spaceship with a piece of string. Accidentally cut it and then just drift into oblivion.

If I could get Hitman 3 hand sculpted world standard of detail in a game like this, and Death Stranding environment, emptyness but with life in it, I could stop living in reality.

They should have made this games with Unreal Engine.

But at the same time the list is 100 times longer for the amount of detail and work that went into this game and makes it stunning and enjoyable. I know people have a lot to say about the NPC's, but goodness even their facial expressions and facial muscles and eyes change as the talk and they get agitated, confused, angry, happy......and the amount of details thst went into cities, towns, structures, streets....... Exceptional work.

Anyways, only 36 hours in and still about a 100 to go.

I guess I have to get some sleep.

Just my opinion
For you this can be the best game of all time. Great. I'm not going to get mad that you like it so much
You do you

Finally got round to doing the MANTIS mission. very cool. Promptly sold the spaceship. But man...I got my best weapon drop yet. Legendary Cornered Old Earth shotgun with explosive damage. Hitting for 290

What I find annoying about this is that it's inconsistent, some doors you can just open and walk in seemlessly and others (most others) need a loading screen.

I guess they wanted to make Atlantis feel bigger than it is. You look at the massive buildings, but then you walk into a shoebox.
I find Atlantis actually the least impressive planet from the couple I have visited.

Akila City is pretty in an odd way and feels bigger to me. Maybe because it is a a lot more detailed, though rustic.

What... I must have missed that. Probably because missed most things being butchered on Level 4. Lol!

Rich man problems you guys have. I'm just a hobo in space.

Think you wouldn't get that drop at that level anyway. I am at level 31, and enemy that dropped it at end of the lair was level 45 or 50 I think. . Higher level and difficulty, better the loot.

On the ground or gunfight, bring on the higher levels,... BUT when in spaceship, RUN away.

I'm sure there are instances they are not needed. In the case of elevators not having worry about up and down mechanics. Probably because they don't work so well in space. But then other times I think it is because they actually loading something. You can see when the doors open before load screens it is just black in the background. A bit of a bummer.

Also why I don't play in 3rd person. Didn't realise actually that my character looks like a whoonga addict.

Should rename to Captain Nyaope
I have been thinking about going into an ENHANCE store and redesigning my characters looks. BUT...the amount of time I spent before just giving up and randomising my looks reminds me how much 'work' it actually is to get character looking like you want.

Will get to it eventually though. Game will be on drive for a long time.

I recon 95% of the time they just warping you. <-- Lazy man animation.

Well on Series X it feels like it, cause entering ship/room and elevator takes like 2 seconds.
Planet hopping between 2 planets takes about 4-5 seconds so that must be loading something

Either way, it does not kill the game for me in fact, I recon it actually saves time. 2 Seconds from one floor to next is better than waiting for the door to close, the elevator to move, door to open.....

I think I know where you're coming from, but I also believe they've pretty much reached the limit of immersion with conventional interactivity. A while ago.
Obviously I've accepted it as such, and I've had great fun with RPGs of all kinds. However, eventually one does develop a sense for what's going on behind the scenes. And how similarly rigid it all really is. The state of the art is impressive, but...

There are of course great games that have stood the test of time. So there was always an art to it. Take for example Star Control 2. Old AF. I still play through that every few years, and it never fails to entertain me. I also still enjoy RPGs which unapologetically lean into conventional RPG mechanics. Ones which present a conventionally rigid system and try to make that entertaining for what it is. Instead of risking the "uncanny blooper valley" of shooting for realism beyond what the underlying tech is realistically capable of.

I'm looking forward to the point where AI in games start to deliver more... "Flexibly realistic" interactivity. Dialogue, movement, characters, rewards, etc. Maybe even player progression to an extent. As somebody interested in game design, I've sampled what's called "LitRPG". Stories written to emulate a character experiencing an RPG world. A common theme is something like: "Truck-kun" delivers a protagonist to a world where RPG rules are intrinsic to reality. Epic system assisted adventure follows. Utter pulp fiction of course, but the underlying concept is fascinating. A common trope is unique achievements with associated unique rewards (skills, stats, etc), which distinguish the protagonist as the result of unusual feats and behavior. On top of a more rigid skills and stats system. If AI could deliver experiences similar to that to gamers, and there's no reason to think it's impossible in the long run, then it would make for some fine, fine entertainment.

One can tell that New Atlantis was probably one of the first cities they built for the game. Worst graphics and NPC's. Big in scale but not enough detail and bad textures (especially outside the city area... horrible water and trees... much worse than 12 year old Skyrim(!). ) Then they didn't bother to revisit it. I kind of avoid it, lol. Too busy in space and on other planets/moons.

Graphics wise the model looks fine but the animation/walking style is clownish and outdated. Meh.
For some reason also slightly slower FPS when playing in 3rd person I noticed.

Tried 3rd person on console as I was, well on console.

Gave up 20 min's in cause man does the camera control suck. Now I only use 3rd person once in a while to look at my ship.
