The Super PSP Thread

CNA has PSP 3000 bundle and GOW special

According to the latest CNA flyer the PSP 3000 Model is now available and not as expensive as we might have believed.

The PSP 3000 is the core package including a free copy of Wall-E @ the retail price of R2399. At this moment the Black edition is the only one available altough we should see the new Silver model pretty soon. Wall-E however might not suit most PSP gamers, but will really aid in mommies buying the handheld for their kids this Xmas.

Wall-E on the other hand retails for between R429-R499 making it worth selling after buying the package.

PSP Firmware 5.0 rundown

The new PSP firmware version 5.0 is out, and if brings a number of improvements. If you are lucky enough to be using it on a brand new PSP-3000 system, the results are even better. We got our hands on the new firmware for our PSP 2000 Slim, and took it for a spin. Here are our thoughts on each of the newly added features:

Playstation Network Functionality

This was perhaps the biggest change that fans were looking forward to. Not only is PSN access a convenient feature, it changes the entire strategy and usefulness of the PSP system. Sony is planning to release all first-party games directly on the store as digital downloads from day one. That means that for many people, UMD is a thing of the past. We couldn't be happier. In terms of functionality, the PSP Store looks exactly like its big brother on the PS3 customers can browse through tabs on the left, while larger icons and prices are displayed on the right. The interface also loads quickly, which is a nice surprise. Downloading is not so speedy: it can take up to 20 minutes to download and install a 100 MB file.

Full screen QWERTY keyboard

In principle, this is a nice idea. We have become so used to typing on our iPhone keyboards, that the old numeric PSP system seemed utterly obsolete. In implementation, however, the fullscreen keyboard on PSP changes little. Without touch input, selecting and moving between letters and numbers is still a pain, and will never replace a tactile keyboard for rapid communication. To try out the new keyboard layout, hit "Select" while in the regular keyboard mode.

Output PSOne Games to Interlaced (non-HD screens)

Sony has managed to meet us half way on this one. In the previous iterations of firmware, owners of a PSP 2000 could connect their systems to a high-definition television display for gaming on the big screen. For some unexplained reason, regular TV set owners were left out in the cold, as the output didn't support regular interlaced output. That problem still has not been fixed for regular UMD games, but firmware version 5.0 CAN output PSX games in full-screen size on any connected device (HD or interlaced). PSP 3000 owners will not have this problem, as the new hardware supports all television displays.

The [Original] theme has been redesigned

One of the first things folks will notice is that the wavy design of the first generation PSP has been changed! It now sports a simpler two-toned color scheme, with a darker wave above the XMB and a lighter color below. We think it looks pretty slick, and is a nice reminder that current PSPs are cabable fo so much more than they were at launch. The only downside is that it can be difficult to read white text against the background of the lighter color. But, if you don't like the new wave, you can always switch back to the old one in the settings menu.

Automatic USB Detection

Remember how annoying it was to plug your PSP into a PC, only to stare at it for 5 minutes waiting for something to happen? Now, instead of facepalming and remembering to go into Settings to activate the USB transfer mode, the PSP will do it automatically. Genius!

Overall, the new version 5.0 firmware is pretty impressive. By far the nicest improvement is the PSP Store, which we predict will entirely change the way that people purchase and play games on the handheld. Already, folks are getting exicted for PSN downloads like Everyday Shooter Portable, which digital distribution makes that much easier to pick up and play. If you have not yet upgraded to the new firmware, grab your PSP and check it out!

PSP-3000 interlacing issues are "features", won't be fixed

Though SCEA is still "looking into the problem," Sony's Japanese headquarters (SCEI) has released a statement describing the PSP-3000 (a.k.a. PSP Brite) scanline issues as being part and parcel of the new hardware. "PSP-3000 has a new LCD device with vastly improved picture quality, achieving a more natural and vivid picture than older models," said the statement (via Engadget Japan). "By improving LCD response time to reduce ghosting, the horizontal-line phenomenon becomes more visible."

Turns out, phenomenon means "no fix in sight." According to Sony, "Since this phenomenon is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with system software update.

Sony says:

"On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000. Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue."

Firmware 5.01 fixes your big memory stick woes

How's that direct-connect PSP Store working out for you? What's that? You have problems downloading stuff to your 8GB or 16GB memory stick? It says there's insufficient space? But that's preposterous, there's plenty of room. That's a bug, right there. Thankfully, it hasn't gone unnoticed at Sony HQ as they're issuing a new firmware revision to fix the problem. From the sounds of it that's pretty much all version 5.01 will do when it releases.

DarkWater's PSP News Update 23/10/08

Well let's start shall we....this is my first news update so I'll try and get the best snippest I possibly can. I'll also try and post one of these everyday :)

Well here goes...happy reading :)

Do you want Galaxy's End?

Remember Galaxy's End? The PSP-exclusive RTS game from Tiki Games was never finished, but the advent of the PSP-direct PlayStation Store has created an opportunity for the developers to continue work and release it to the masses. "When we started Galaxy's End we absolutely needed a publisher at some point - not just for the financial aspect but to get it into stores. Now that the PLAYSTATION Store has been added for the PSP we have the opportunity to finish the game and release it as a digital download (like NOVASTRIKE)."

But, there's still a year's worth of work left for the team before they can prepare the RTS for release. And, there's the question of money. "Quite frankly we don't have the finances to finish Galaxy's End right now. So we'll likely have to look for another loan. And I'll need to convince my family (who are presently self-funding Tiki Games) that there's a large enough audience that would be willing to purchase a downloadable real-time strategy game for the PSP."

PSP-3000 sold over 140K in first four days

PSP Brite is now out worldwide, so how's it doing everywhere else? In Japan (where the PSP is the sacred deity of 4-player co-op), it seems that not too many are catching on to the new hardware; only 141,270 units were sold in the first four days of sale (Oct. 16-19).

As PSPHyper points out, these numbers are not that impressive when compared to the PSP Slim's initial sales numbers which were 250,702 for the first week with 130K of that from the first day alone. With relatively slow sales figures and seemingly disastrous performance issues, it looks like the PSP Brite is getting off to a very rough start.

SOE 'looking at' possible PSP MMO

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has revealed to MTV Multiplayer that the company is considering massively multiplayer online games for the PSP.

“I think PSP is something that we’re definitely looking at; 34 million [sold] worldwide really opens your eyes, and they’re all connected,” Smedley told me in an interview following his keynote and panel appearance about the future of MMOGs at the New York Games Conference on Friday.

“We started to get very interested in [the PSP] when we switched over from Sony Pictures to Sony Computer Entertainment back in April,” he explained. “And as we’ve kind of got our heads up looking around the world within Sony Computer Entertainment, we’re really starting to see a big push for PSP. We think it’s a world-class device… In the future, we see full MMOs that are designed for the PSP.”

However, before full-fledged MMOs, Smedley sees integration of existing online games with the handheld device, though the company hasn’t finalized any decisions. “Maybe one way to do it: In ‘Free Realms,’ you could have a pet-training system that literally connects to our online gaming where you can mess around with your pet,” he said of SOE’s younger-skewing MMO due out next year.

“Another way to do it might be to give them mini-games that they can do [on the PSP] when sitting at a bus stop,” he offered. “You’re sitting there leveling up your character, you log in at home when you’re on wi-fi, and all of sudden your character has leveled up. We think those kinds of experiences are very possible.”

Tom Clancy's EndWar coming to PSP this November

Ubisoft is bringing yet another Tom Clancy game to the handhelds. This time, EndWar is getting the PSP treatment. The upcoming game takes place during World War III. Players take control of the U.S. Joint Strike Force, European Enforcers Corps or Russian Spetsnaz Guards Brigade in three separate (but intertwined) campaigns. Each campaign includes over 30 battle scenarios taking place on real-world battlefields including Paris and London.

EndWar also features two-player versus multiplayer mode, including additional missions specifically designed for multiplayer battles. There's also a mission editor, which allows players to share and create custom battlefields and scenarios. Expect EndWar on November 4th.

Resident Evil 2 Playstation Classic US release a priority

Resident Evil 2 was released on the PlayStation Store in Japan on December 26, 2007 as a Playstation Classic. Capcom have now said that they are planning to release the game on the US PSN and that they "hope to bump that up the priority list of "things to do" after HD Remix is out the door." "There's a lot of internal issues to work out to get that rolling properly." added the rep.

Sony: PSP sales to beat fiscal year forecast

Sony previously pegged the PSP to sell roughly 15 million units for this fiscal year ending March 2009. Now, the company is saying they're going to crush that forecast by another one million units. This news comes in light despite issues with the newly released PSP Brite. However, Sony still has other models currently out on the market including the sleek Blue and Red Slim models that are expected to sell, sell, sell.

Sony's numbers in Japan have done amazingly well thus far this year, selling over 1.6 million units from April to September; however, if the PSP is to meet 16 million units by March, there's still a lot of work to be done worldwide.

Is it really worth it to get the PSP 3000? All I see is and upgrade to the following:
1) Better Screen (pretty cool but not a must)
2) Microphone (Personally I'll never use it, as in never)
3) Can plug it into various screens / TV's (Again I'll never use it)

I almost bought a PSP a few months ago but decided to hold out until the 3000 came out. I'll definately be buying one next month but I wonder if I'll get more bang for my buck by either:
1) Getting a 2nd Phat or Slim
2) Purchasing a new 2000

I'll be using exclusively when I am out of the country. I do not have acces to the internet beyond browsing (and hanging around these forums). I would like to be able to copy all my UMD's (As I like to hoard originals!), that I'll purchase, onto my portbale drive (So I guess I will need CFW).

What thinkest thou? Phat, Slim, Brite?

Thanks
J

Slim ;) Sony might be recalling the 3000 due to interlacing issues

Won't bite on the PSP 3000

I read x3shere's on eXophase.com review on the PSP 3000. Good review, but like DarKWateR said, why on earth would I want to use my PSP to chat with.... it's a gaming console dammit! And as for the interlacing, it WILL be noticeable. Regardless of how they are trying to cover it up.

SONY are trying too hard to make it a interactive toy for communication than for gaming purposes.

Oh well, I wonder what other stuff ups they are going to bring out...
