The Super PSP Thread

I read x3shere's on eXophase.com review on the PSP 3000. Good review, but like DarKWateR said, why on earth would I want to use my PSP to chat with.... it's a gaming console dammit! And as for the interlacing, it WILL be noticeable. Regardless of how they are trying to cover it up.

SONY are trying too hard to make it a interactive toy for communication than for gaming purposes.

Oh well, I wonder what other stuff ups they are going to bring out...

IMO (for a non owner of a PSP), the difference between the 2000 and 3000 was too little to really make a difference. On top of that, the 2000 was released last year (correct me if I am wrong)?

I have been browsing quite a number of PSP sites and forums and the complaints / gripes are all the same. Ppl want something different in the next upgrade. A redesign or perhaps a hard drive would prolly sell well.

Slim it is! Thanks DW. :)

Well let me give you some more heads up on the semi bad/good news (depending how you look at it.)

<Warming up fingers>...let's begin

Well if you don’t know about the current interlacing issue that has been plaguing the PSP 3000 since launch then you obviously haven’t been paying much attention.

But for those uninformed here’s the full description of the problem:

“Soon after the release of the PSP-3000 it emerged that the new screen showed visible dark lines, similar to traditional scan lines, and displayed interlacing-like artifacts during on-screen motion. It has been shown that the new screen possesses a new horizontal subpixel structure, which is thought to be the main contributory factor to the screen's scanline-like appearance. The exact cause of the interlace-style artifacts is unknown, but has been confirmed by SCEI as being an intrinsic characteristic of the new LCD panel.”

After literally hundreds of complaints by PSP 3000 owners, Sony responded to the problem with the following description:

"On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000. Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue."

Most gamers indeed hoped for a Firmware based solution but soon realized that the actual problems were caused by the internal hardware (LCD) itself rendering a software fix impossible. Until yesterday Sony has been pretty quiet about the whole issue but some observant people have indeed spotted a few little changes on the European PlayStation website. The PSP 3000 has been totally removed from the site and the description on the other PlayStation based sites changed from “improved” LCD to "advanced" LCD. There also been word about Amazon completely stopping pre-orders for the PSP.

Here by us in South Africa however the whole PSP story is a totally different ballgame. When parents and gamers heard about the “flaw” with the new PSP 3000 series they immediately rushed to the shops (It’s almost Christmas time you know) to grab the last remaining PSP 2000 stock (probably with the idea in mind the PSP 2000 will be discontinued). Unfortunately for them Ster Kinekor (The PlayStation agent for South Africa) had already received instructions from Sony to pull back all PSP 2000 and …gasp... PlayStation 2 stock.

Why Sony pulled back the PS2 stock only God will know but I decided to contact the retailers to find out about their plans with the PSP. Toys R Us explained that Ster Kinekor does not even carry stock of the new PSP 3000 or the PSP 2000 basically rendering them a sitting duck in terms of PSP sales. Musica explained that Ster Kinekor wasn’t even planning on bringing in PSP 3000 stock and were patiently awaiting a cheaper bundle of the older PSP 2000. CNA informed me that they don’t even have an ETA on either the PSP Brite or PSP Lite and might not even get in stock by Xmas. Some other retailers did not even received the full details on the PSP 3000 from Ster Kinekor and where under some weird impression the unit included a Camera (huh?).

Today however that all semi changed. As mentioned in one of my previous posts CNA advertised the new PSP 3000 in their latest advert. They were suppose to get stock of it yesterday bundled with Wall-E @ R2399. However when I phoned yesterday they had 0 stock available. Today I spoke to my buddy at CNA Canal Walk and yes they did receive plenty of stock and yes the price is still the same and yes it still comes with Wall-E buuuuutttt it's not the 3000 model. Toys-R-Us and Musica = Same story. Bottom line: No retailer has received any PSP 3000 in SA at all.

Sony might look into replacing the 3000 models totally (with a non interlacing issue) but that might take some time if ever. Japan folks are still buying these units like sweetcakes so Sony sees no need to stop production at this point. They have however cancelled the Black PSP Bundle (Amazon pre-orders included) to be replaced with a standard Black 3000 Core package later in December (which SA might not see for some time still). Yes the 3000 does have better colours in comparison with the 2000 but it's NOT as great as you might come to expect (some of the older titles such as Metal Slug actually looks worse). 2000 models will be discontined sooner or later and the 3000 model might still continue having the LCD based problem/feature. I would personally recommend all new PSP buyers to grab a 2000 (homebrew also does not work on 3000 at this point) while they still can.

That's my 2c on the matter

Video capture in the works for future PSP firmware

With PSP firmware 5.00 out of the way, what are Sony's engineers in Japan working on now? Looks like video capture is the "next big thing" for the PSP. PS3 has the ability to record gameplay footage and upload it directly to YouTube. Not many games support this, but do a search for PixelJunk Eden on YouTube, and you'll find tons of direct-feed user-generated videos.

It'll be exciting to see PSP games support this in the future. We're intrigued by the possibility of recording our own game footage -- but is the PSP really powerful enough to handle 3D gaming and video recording at the same time? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Super Stardust Portable introduces 'Impact Mode'

Looks like the upcoming PSP version of Super Stardust is shaping up quite nicely. This new trailer showcases how well the handheld is able to translate the popular PS3 arcade shooter. Although the polygon count and framerate take a dip, SSP still looks the role (and if you read our hands-on, you know that it plays the part too).

The trailer also teases a new "Impact Mode," which piques our interest. What is it? We're not exactly too sure, but it looks like it makes crashing into things a very good thing. We approve.

4GB PSP Entertainment Pack will no longer see release

When the PSP Brite was introduced, SCEA had plans for two bundles. The first, which is available in stores now, is the Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack, which includes a silver PSP-3000, 1GB Memory Stick, a copy of Ratchet & Clank and echochrome download for $199. The other option, which was originally supposed to be available in November was the 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack, which included a black PSP-3000, 4GB Memory Stick and a download of Everyday Shooter for $199.

According to the PlayStation.blog, the 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack has been canceled before release. "SCEA has seen significant interest in the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack in North America, which includes the updated PSP-3000. As a result, we will be streamlining our PSP hardware lineup and will no longer be offering the previously announced 4GB Memory PSP Entertainment Pack."

Sounds like a bad PR spin to us, but we'll manage. The Ratchet bundle looks like a good deal -- and as the post notes, a 4GB Memory Stick can be found on the cheap at many retailers.

PlayStation Store for PC reopens with Media Manager 3

The new PlayStation Store for PC has opened, and it looks good. Once again, it's limited to Windows PCs. This time, it'll require the installation of the free Media Manager 3.0 software. After a brief installation and registration process, you'll be able to access the PlayStation Store directly from the interface. Anyone that has used the PS3 version of the PlayStation Store will be quite familiar with the layout of the Store.

Other features of the Media Manager include the ability to transfer music and photos to your system through a simple drag-and-drop interface. You'll even be able to rip music off of audio CDs directly onto your system. You'll also be able to back up for save and game data. Overall, we'll say the new Media Manager software is great -- especially with its current price tag.

Sony Europe exec talks low cost titles for the open platforms

PlayStation was in the limelight at Casual Connect as George Bain, Sony Europe's developer relations manager, addressed Eastern European developers. The 411: open platforms make for low cost titles.

Bain emphasized that because a platform is open, developers no longer need to submit a game for approval, allowing them to create games at low development cost.

Bain adds that there is no cost to become a licensed developer, but you'll have to pay for the dev kits. Dev kits for the PS3 cost US$ 10,250. If developers are working on smaller, more casual titles, then they could use a debug kit instead, which costs only 10% of a full dev kit.

Sony is adapting a global approval system. Previous games had to be submitted separately through Europe, Japan, and America. Now, a game idea will simply be sent to a single website for approval.

"Without the need of a licensed publisher, it's a direct relationship between a developer and Sony." Sony will also allow developers to publish through third-party publishers. "this has never been done before," said Bain, "This is something we're actively promoting."

This gives developers so much new opportunity, especially when we consider that publishers aren't imperative for the PS3 and PSP. We're already seeing this in Tiki game's quest to complete Galaxy's End.

Bain also mentioned that the PSP is easier to develop for, saying that "it doesn't require a huge amount of programming resources to develop on the PlayStation Portable." With the success that the PSP is having, this would be a great opportunity for developers.

Great news. If this goes well, we will be seeing great, less-pricey titles on the PSP, and even on the PS2. We'll also be getting them a lot faster - minus all the red tape and processing that conventional publishing would take. Perhaps we're seeing the start of some form of indie gaming? Let's sit tight and watch as it unfolds in the coming weeks.

Well that's that for today ;)

PSP Brite is impervious to hackers

Sony's latest hardware revision, the PSP-3000 aka PSP Brite, is doing well in standing up against pirates, hackers and their tools. According to PSP World, previous exploits which allow access to kernel memory and firmware are now patched up -- no way getting in there now.

Infamous hackers like Dark Alex have yet to find a way through the PSP Brite's new specs. Other hackers are getting frustrated; take Royginald from the Philippines who has swapped in the PSP Slim's CPU into a PSP Brite while keeping the screen and case intact. All that to run custom firmware and homebrew which doesn't even run properly because of signal output differences.

Luminous Arc devs planning 'really cool action game' for PSP

Japanese video game developer imageepoch has revealed that they just might broaden their portfolio with a new game to be released for the PSP.

See, ever since their studio was established in 2005, they've only been working on Nintendo platforms. To date, they've got the following under their belt, all of which are RPGs:

Luminous Arc (DS)
Luminous Arc 2: Will (DS)
World Destruction (DS)
7th Dragon (DS)
Arc Rise Fantasia (Wii)

Now, imageepoch president Ryoei Mikage just let Siliconera in on a little hint: without elaborating on anything, he said that "Next year or next, next year, there might be a really cool action PSP game."

Well I found Luminous Arc fun (and oftentimes distracting too - see image on right), and I wished they release World Destruction in the west simply because some of the original Square Enix members who worked on Xenogears were also on board the World Destruction team.

So this time, it's an action game, huh? And on the PSP too. Currently only billed as "a really cool action PSP game," it's hard to make anything out of it. It kinda reminds me of Sony's "super-sexy secret game" which was supposed to have been revealed at TGS.

Question:

What is the largest memory stick one can purchase for the PSP. I ask this because I saw a sony pro duo 8G stick for around R700-R1100 and a 16G stick for around R2k. They both said magic gate on them but I am not sure as to whether the 16G will work or not.

16gig should work fine.

I'm really glad the psp 3000 hasn't been lacked yet. Maybe now we'll get more publishers interested in the psp and we'll get more games.

Lol. Meant hacked. :-) I'm just sick of publishers not putting games out on psp because of piracy, yet i buy ALL my games.

Well how about this??!

Yeah, it is expensive to buy 16 & 32GB's....

But what about this option... saw it on one of the other PSP sites.

www.photofast.tw

Check out the CR-5400. It's under High Speed adapters....

I've noticed Micro SD cards are far more cheaper to run. Regardless of the loading times etc of the cards, I think this is a better route.

Opinions?

I heard of some people going that route only to report much slower performance in data transfer/read times...although I have not personally tested it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't DAX write a patch for the slower cards?

I'm honestly not sure.

On a side note...Decided to get a new PSP 2000 on Saturday...long story short....Dead pixel (not stuck).... :(

Hi guy's, quick question, where can i get a generic/no name brand TV out cable for the PSP slim, i have looked around and some places dont even know what i'm talking about,

I wanna get those new Myvu glasses and use that for playing games and watching movies whilst travelling, so any cheap PSP tv out cable will do.

Thanks.

EEK!

Agge NEE! Hate those dead pixels!!!!

I'm going to check and see if I can get an app to test the speeds of those adapters.

From the PDF they sent me, apparently it can run speeds of up to 10mbps.

I'm ordering 10 samples of which all are taken already. Nice thing is, it'll take MicroSD AND MicroSDHC cards. SHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! And I checked the prices of SDHC, DAMN cheap!!!! :D

I'm honestly not sure.
