The Suzuki Swift Sport (SSS) Thread

Suzuki at 100: Is this the most fun car, bike and boat maker?

Our man cashed in his invite to the belated 100th birthday party for the company that Michio Suzuki founded in Hamamatsu, Japan, in 1920

The family of one of my school friends owned a couple of Honda motorcycle dealerships so a weekend at their house was always a treat because there were trail bikes or stripped-down Honda Cubs to play with. But it’s the cars I remember.

His dad had a BMW Batmobile (almost new back then) and his mum had a Suzuki SC100 Whizzkid. Not surprisingly, it was the CSL that I remember best. And if I did ever go in the little Suzuki, I’ve forgotten.

The memory is about to be triggered because among the heritage vehicles Suzuki has brought to this centenary event is a very tidy 1982 SC100 GX. From the last year of production, it features a 47bhp 970cc four-cylinder engine mounted in the back of the car and driving through a four-speed gearbox. The engine produced such a rearward weight bias that Suzuki added ballast behind the front bumper.

We’re heading north from Cardiff into the hills with the Whizzkid, plus an Ignis and Swift Sport, both brand new. The Swift Sport is a nice little warm hatch but not as captivating or fun to drive as its non-turbocharged predecessors. That said, I’d rather own it than Mercedes’ ludicrously overpowered 400bhp A45. The Ignis is one of my favourite cars. This one is four-wheel drive, which is a shame because it weighs 940kg whereas the 2WD model tips in at 895kg. That’s remarkable for a four-door car that meets modern crash regulations. Quite how Lotus let the last Elise get so near a tonne I do not understand. Mazda is the only other mainstream car company that understands dieting as well as Suzuki.

Next-generation Suzuki Swift Sport to gain more power and stiffer chassis?

The next-generation Suzuki Swift Sport, which was believed to have been previewed at this year’s now cancelled Tokyo Motor Show, has been rumoured to receive a more powerful powertrain and stiffer chassis to enhance its appeal as a subcompact hot hatch.

Based on information sourced by Best Car Web, the next-generation Suzuki Swift Sport will adopt the current Boosterjet turbocharged 1,4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with the 48-volt mild-hybrid system as seen in the European market. This powertrain, however will be revised to provide an increased power output although no figure has been clarified.

The Japanese publication goes on to claim that the chassis of the next-generation Suzuki Swift Sport will be carried over from the current generation and receive added rigidity to refine the hot hatch’s market appeal. We can expect the all new model to make its official first appearance around May 2023.

Furthermore for the Swift range, a full generation shift is expected for 2022 which could include hybridisation throughout. The mild hybrid system rumoured for the lower end of the range is an ISG system that employs a 12-volt lithium-ion battery which will add about 2 kW to the total power output. The purpose for this system will be to assist the subcompact hatch with idling and energy regeneration.

Get one if you can. You’ll love it. Have driven one extensively and they’re good. Not a fan of the 10 000km service interval though.
I’m surprised it has 10k service intervals. Thought it’s 15k. The car looks amazing. I just wish it came with a better sound system straight from the factory.

Yeahp. Sound is underwhelming. But it’s a “budget” kind of car though? You can’t get it all.

It’s fun to drive and not too bad on gas (recorded in the late 7s - early 8s litres per 100km). Small trim issues though I think would be a small issue over time given how kinda flimsy it feels inside.

I own this car. It's epic. I kid you not when I say it's my favorite car of my garage.

It's like a gokart

Any planned mods? What’re your impressions so far, @RiaX ?

I have 3 cars 2 are German branded both are 3 times the price of the little suzuki. When I say the little suzuki is more fun to drive than those I kid you not.

I have the triptronic (wife has auto only license) and in manual mode it doesn't want to change gears too quickly (it eventually dose though) which is nice when you trying to have a little fun.

The car shines in twisty areas and weaving in traffic makes you tempted to drive like an idiot on the freeway. Just like a go-kart it sticks to the road.

It's not the fastest thing but you really feel the car so you don't need to drive at stupid speeds to have fun. Practically it can fit 4 adults very easily you'd be surprised how much of cabin space it got for a little car.

It's infotainment system is very good for a car of this price. Not the most vibrant or responsive but good enough. Has one USB port so a bit of bummer luckily it compensates for this with a SD card slot. So you don't have to choose between phone and music.

Boot space is small but you can fit necessities. Don't expect to put a pram.

Visibility and agility of the car is good making super easy to drive stress free

Will really put a smile on your face.

I'm not into modding much I'm pretty noob for that. Though I'll consider it maybe one day

Lovely! I’m glad you’re enjoying the car. It’s amazing how competent this little car is. I haven’t yet seen or heard a negative review about it.

I wish I saw more of these bad boys on the road. I love the styling. Looks like it came straight out of a manga comic.

It has height adjustable seat belts....

It's LED headlamps are excellent very good visibility.

The hard plastic is visible but it's expected so it doesnt really take anything away from the car.

Has 3 cup holders.

Flat bottom steering wheel which is the perfect size. It's a bit on the thin side but you get used to it.

Only bad things I can think of is it doesn't have the small rear triangle glass on the back doors (the door handles are there) so it can be problematic in very rare instances.

It has a very small fuel tank so you will be filling fuel quite often. I get 13km per liter

And it has a very girly hooter sound so when you hoot no one respects you ... :(

Haha yes the hooter is very sheepish! If I were to get one I’d replace the 3rd cup holder with an aftermarket centre console/armrest.

I just wish it came with a better sound system straight from the factory.
Suzuki Kyalami used to offer a Rockford Fosgate sound system installation for R8k. The installation included an amplifier, a small subwoofer in the boot and an equaliser under the steering wheel. It sounded really good. That was in 2020 though, not sure if they still do it.

Wish there were a lot more reviews for this car. I love it!
