Syria slams EU decision to life Arms Embargo for Rebels

The Syrian government has condemned an EU decision to lift a ban on supplying arms to rebel fighters, saying the move will sabotage peace efforts, Syria's state television reported Wednesday.

"The recent EU decision proves they are hindering the international efforts aimed at achieving a political settlement to the crisis in Syria based on national dialogue among Syrians," the broadcaster quoted an unnamed foreign ministry official as saying.

The European Union decided Monday to lift its arms embargo on Syria after hours of fraught negotiations, although ministers agreed not to supply any weapons before August.

The Syrian official accused the EU of providing "support and encouragement to terrorists by providing them with weapons in clear violation of international law and the UN charter," the report said.

Syrian forces fighting President Bashar Al-Assad have praised the EU's decision, which was spearheaded by Britain and France, while criticizing the delay in any shipments.

The move was also welcomed by the United States, but condemned as illegitimate by the Russian government.

Later Wednesday, the UN human rights council was expected to vote on a resolution put forward by the United States, Turkey and Qatar to censure the Syrian regime for attacking civilians in the besieged town of al-Kussair.

The text, presented in Geneva on Tuesday, calls on the government to immediately stop attacking civilians in the strategic town and "stresses the need to ensure accountability for those responsible for the massacre in Al-Qusayr (ie. al-Kussair)."

I cannot believe they are going to arm al queda in syria

Al queda and their syrian opposition group(one of the biggest in syria) are on the terrorist list and the US have declared a global war against al queda who are known for their terrorism :p.

Terrorists supporting their good buddies by the look of it. So how can you be at war with a group/terrorists but you end up arming them. I guess it comes back to my theory, you need an enemy to fight or there can be no war. Manufactured war i guess is what the US has been about since this war on terror started.

It is interesting that are arming terrorists though.

You know the human race is a fk up when the war on terror is actually bought into and people sit back while the very same people who are at war with terror are the ones arming the terror creators.

I hope the US arm them well, would be awesome, alquda with some choppers, jets, tank, apc's, air missile. Wow imagine alqueda with chemical weapons, hells yea!!!!!!!!!!! Sick world we live in, so i guess al quada are really just a reason for the americans to be at war, a division of the government we can call them i guess. Driving war after war.

Problem is the innocent caught in the crossfire !

Mmm chattering away, still accusing the USA only.

I take it you don't want to respond to the info, showing your statements to be constantly and deliberately, false.

Are you here to debate, or just ramble on all excited and disjointedly to yourself and your wild visions?

Whether it is the united states, uk or france. Is there a difference? Considering the US are at war with al queda, i wonder why obama is supporting the arming of al queda and a terrorist group inside syria.

Seems a bit odd to be funding terrorism don't you think? The only reason the US is not backing this or showing much support is because they are going to be pushing the arming of terrorists that will be next door to israel, now it will be interesting to see if israel hit those deliveries to the terrorist groups in syria. The biggest one is al queda backed but i am sure you guys know the different groups inside syria. I am sure you know the al queda backed one which happens to be the biggest one and happens to be considered a terrorist organization.

The UK and FRANCE are just doing the US bidding in europe because i doubt israel would support al queda being armed with anything. So in order to keep israeli and american relations in tact in public the US are using their friends to push their agenda. Marine is right about obama actually. Snake

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not Al Qaeda directly involved, but there are rumoured links between some of the rebels and Al Qaeda?

How is this different to Iran supporting Hezbollah, but you always stand up for Iran, killa?

They obviously did their calculations and figured the best option, is to just arm the rebels in order to bring the civil war to a conclusion, within as short a time frame as possible, then deal with the rebel government after. The exact reasons, you can email them for.

Yes, we have a fair idea of the players involved, thank you. See above.

Yes, sure, the USA is making the UK and France ship the weapons, so Israel does not find out. Shhhh...don't tell anyone... *Shakes head*

You believe israel would fine with al queda being armed?

I somehow am not very certain.

If you know the players light please tell me the group i am speaking about. Considering israel hits arms shipments bound for terrorist groups i dunno what they are going to do. Unless they are blind and cannot see the terror that is beyond their borders, that will have good arms plus chemical weapons if assad falls. They seem fully aware of the threat where as the US and co seem determined to give them weapons.

Yes.

Well, your hopping all over the place with assumptions, pretty much showed us, that you weren't certain about a couple of things.

Are you drunk? From your disjointed ramblings, I assume you are speaking about al qaeda. The rebels' representatives, for a new government, will still evolve further and the groups, the final government is formed from, will no doubt cover the ones there fighting, and those behind the scenes.

Don't worry, the USA and the Israelis have it covered. Really. Take a deep breath. Slowly exhale. There you go.

Israel warns Russia over Syria arms delivery

Israel has said it will act if Russia delivers promised anti-aircraft missiles to its ally Syria, in an apparent allusion to another air raid on the neighbouring country.

Moshe Yaalon, Israeli defence minister, issued his warning on Tuesday shortly after a senior official in Moscow said the Russian government reserved the right to provide Syria with state-of-the-art S-300 air defence missiles

"As far as we are concerned, that is a threat," Yaalon said.

"At this stage I can't say there is an escalation. The shipments have not been sent on their way yet. And I hope that they will not be sent.

"But if, by misfortune, they arrive in Syria, we will know what to do."

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2013/05/201352954449403614.html

The joke is Russia has backed Syria's opposition to the EU lifting an arms embargo while she herself has sent weapons to Syria to help deter "hotheads" - a veiled jibe at NATO's enforced no-fly zone over Libya - and in doing so may be guilty of encouraging another state to get involved; Israel. If Hezbollah are there, Israel will not risk advanced weaponry going through Syrian hands into the hands of Hezbollah. And they have already nailed a weapons shipment in Syria already, so they will do it again.

Syrian Opposition to stay away from Peace Talks over Civilian Killings

The opposition Syrian National Coalition on Thursday said it would not attend a forthcoming international peace conference over civilian killings.

"Lives of Syrians are now more important than political solutions," said George Sabra, the acting head of the alliance.

"The Coalition will not participate in any conferences ... in view of the invasion by militias of Iran and (Lebanese) Hezbollah of the Syrian lands," he told reporters in Istanbul.

Russian arms to Syria 'Unhelpful': Hague

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Thursday that Russian weapons supplies to the Syrian regime were impeding the search for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

"The continued flow of weapons to the (Syrian) regime and the difficulties and disagreements on the attending the Geneva talks don't help at all to resolve this crisis," Hague told journalists here.

"This is the most pressing crisis in world affairs today," Hague said.

His remarks referred to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's suggestion that his regime has received advanced S-300 air defence missiles promised by Russia as well as the announcements by Syria's main opposition group that it would not take part in proposed US-Russia peace talks.

"It's very important that all concerned are prepared to come into the planned Geneva peace talks, that's the regime and opposition. It is the only hope in the near future of achieving a political solution.

"We remain committed to getting the regime and opposition together at the second Geneva conference and we will continue to work on that in the coming days," Hague stressed.

He referred to the so-called Geneva 2 peace conference proposed by Moscow and Washington and aimed at ending a conflict estimated to have killed close to 100,000 people in more than two years.

Assad confident of Victory

Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview broadcast Thursday that he is "confident in victory" in his country's civil war, and he warned that Damascus would retaliate for any future Israeli airstrike on his territory.

Assad also told the Lebanese TV station Al-Manar that Russia has fulfilled some of its weapons contracts recently, but he was vague on whether this included advanced S-300 air defense systems.

The Syrian president's comments were in line with a forceful and confident message the regime has been sending in recent days, even as the international community attempts to launch a peace conference in Geneva, possibly next month. The strong tone coincided with recent military victories in battles with armed rebels trying to topple him.

The interview was broadcast as Syria's main political opposition group appeared to fall into growing disarray.

The international community had hoped the two sides would start talks on a political transition. However, the opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, said earlier Thursday that it would not attend a conference, linking the decision to a regime offensive on the western Syrian town of Qusair and claiming that hundreds of wounded people were trapped there.

Assad, who appeared animated and gestured frequently in the TV interview, said he has been confident from the start of Syria's conflict more than two years ago that he would be able to defeat his opponents.

"Regarding my confidence about victory, had we not had this confidence, we wouldn't have been able to fight in this battle for two years, facing an international attack," he said. Assad portrayed the battle to unseat him as a "world war against Syria and the resistance" - a reference to the Lebanese Hezbollah, a close ally.

"We are confident and sure about victory, and I confirm that Syria will stay as it was," he said, "but even more than before, in supporting resistance fighters in all the Arab world."

Assad has said he would stay in power at least until elections scheduled in 2014, but he went further in the interview, saying he "will not hesitate to run again" if the Syrian people want him to do so.

Taking a tough line, he also warned that Syria would strike back hard against any future Israeli airstrike.

Earlier this month, Israel had struck near Damascus, targeting suspected shipments of advanced weapons purportedly intended for Hezbollah. Syria did not respond at the time.

Assad said he has informed other countries that Syria would respond next time. "If we are going to retaliate against Israel, this retaliation should be a strategic response," he said.

Russia's S-300 missiles would significantly boost Syria's air defenses and are seen as a game-changer, but Assad was unclear about whether Syria has received a first shipment.

Earlier Thursday, Al-Manar had sent text messages to reporters with what it said was an excerpt from the interview.

The station quoted Assad as saying Syria had received a first shipment of such missiles. The Associated Press called Al-Manar after receiving the text message, and an official at the station said the message had been sent based on Assad's comments.

In the interview, Assad was asked about the S-300s, but his answer was general.

He said Russia's weapons shipments are not linked to the Syria conflict. "We have been negotiating with them about different types of weapons for years, and Russia is committed to Syria to implement these contracts," he said.

"All we have agreed on with Russia will be implemented and some of it has been implemented recently, and we and the Russians continue to implement these contracts," he said.

Earlier this week, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Israel considered the S-300s in Syrian hands a threat and signaled it was prepared to use force to stop delivery. Israel had no comment Thursday.

The S-300s have a range of up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) and can track and strike multiple targets at once. Syria already possesses Russian-made air defenses.

The U.S. and Israel had urged Russia to cancel the sale, but Russia rejected the appeals.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov this week that the U.S. is concerned about Moscow's continued financial and military support for the Assad regime, said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

Meanwhile, Assad dismissed Syria's political opposition as foreign-directed exiles who don't represent the people of Syria.

The Syrian National Coalition has been meeting for more than a week in Istanbul to expand its membership, elect new leaders and devise a strategy for possible peace talks.

Coalition members got bogged down in personnel issues for much of the time. On Thursday, they announced that under current circumstances, they will not attend peace talks.

In the interview, Assad reiterated that the Syrian government is ready to attend in principle, though he said any agreement reached there would have to be put to a referendum.

"We will go to this conference as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people. Whom do they represent?" he said of the opposition.

"We know that we are going to negotiate with the countries that stand behind it (the opposition) and not to negotiate with them. When we speak with the slave, we are indirectly negotiating with the master," he added.

The coalition's decision not to attend the talks could torpedo the only peace plan the international community has been able to rally behind, although prospects for its success appeared doubtful from the start.

Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, said she hoped it was not the coalition's final word on the Geneva conference. She said Robert Ford, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, is in Istanbul trying to help the opposition sort through its internal problems. Once members have decided on issues such as expanded membership and leadership, the U.S. hopes they will recommit to peace talks, Psaki said.

Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, accused the coalition of trying to set preconditions, by demanding that Assad's departure from office must be the focus of any peace talks. He called such a demand "unrealistic."

He urged the U.S. and Europe to "restrain those who are encouraging such unacceptable and aggressive approaches on the part of the National Coalition."

If the diplomatic option is now off the table, following the opposition's decision, the West, including the U.S., will have to come up with a new approach. President Barack Obama could face renewed pressure to help the rebels militarily.

The opposition linked its decision to stay away from the conference to an ongoing battle for the strategic town of Qusair and the role of Hezbollah in helping Assad.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah is heavily involved in the 12-day-old push to drive rebels from the town. Coalition officials said Thursday that hundreds of peopled wounded in the fighting were trapped in the town.

"The talk about the international conference and a political solution to the situation in Syria has no meaning in light of the massacres that are taking place," coalition spokesman Khalid Saleh told reporters. He said the group will not support any international peace efforts in light of the "invasion" of Syria by Iran and Hezbollah.

Both sides value Qusair, which lies along a land corridor linking two of Assad's strongholds - Damascus and an area along the Mediterranean coast. For the rebels, holding the town means protecting their supply line to Lebanon, just 10 kilometers (6 miles) away.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the 26-month-old Syrian conflict that has had increasingly sectarian overtones. Members of Syria's Sunni Muslim majority dominate the rebel ranks and Assad's regime is mostly made up of Alawites, an offshoot sect of Shiite Islam.

Turkish security forces found a 2kg cylinder with sarin gas after searching the homes of Syrian militants from the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra Front who were previously detained, Turkish media reports. The gas was reportedly going to be used in a bomb

The sarin gas was found in the homes of suspected Syrian Islamists detained in the southern provinces of Adana and Mersia following a search by Turkish police on Wednesday, reports say. The gas was allegedly going to be used to carry out an attack in the southern Turkish city of Adana.

On Monday, Turkish special anti-terror forces arrested 12 suspected members of the Al-Nusra Front, the Al-Qaeda affiliated group which has been dubbed "the most aggressive and successful arm” of the Syrian rebels. The group was designated a terrorist organization by the United States in December.

Police also reportedly found a cache of weapons, documents and digital data which will be reviewed by police.

Following the searches, five of those detained were released following medical examinations at the Forensic Medicine Institution Adana. Seven suspects remain in custody. Turkish authorities are yet to comment on the arrests.

In a separate incident in Adana, police reportedly received intelligence that an explosive-laden vehicle had entered the town of Adana on Thursday, the Taraf daily reports.

Ankara has attempted to bolster the Syrian opposition without becoming embroiled in the Syrian civil war, a policy which Damascus claims lead to the deadliest act of terrorism on Turkish soil.

On May 11, 51 people were killed and 140 injured after two car bombs exploded in the Turkish town of Reyhanlı, located near the country’s border with Syria.A dozen Turkish nationals have been charged in the twin bombings, and Ankara has accused Damascus of helping the suspects carry out the attack.

"This incident was carried out by an organization which is in close contact to pro-regime groups in Syria and I say this very clearly, with the Syrian Mukhabarat [intelligence agency]," Interior Minister Muammer Guler said.

Syria’s Information Minister Omran Zoubi denied any link the attack, saying his country "did not commit and would never commit such an act because our values would not allow that".Zoubi further charged the Turkish government had facilitated the flow of arms, explosives, funds and fighters across the country’s border into Syria, claiming that that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his party bear direct responsibility [for the attack]."

Reports of chemical weapons use by both Damascus and the Syrian

rt.com

O my bad i forgot about this thread and made a new one hahah, whoops :D

Ok before we get into a setup argument, turkey hates assad and wants him gone so they would not really want to setup the rebels.

A little history on the group involved. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Nusra_Front

Now these are the people that will be receiving weapons and would be running syria when assad or if assad falls.

Now france who really are keen to arm the rebels have said this:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...9480J220130509

Now perhaps i am just not thinking clearly but WTF are they doing arming terrorists? While claiming to be at war with them. Remarkable people even support arming these people. Imagine what they would do with proper chemical weapons which assad does actually have.

http://rt.com/news/sarin-gas-turkey-al-nusra-021/

I guess we know who is using chemical weapons now. Still going to arm people using chemical weapons? Wow insane.

Rebels boosted as Assad forces close in on Rebel Town

Syrian troops and their Hezbollah allies on Friday tightened the noose on the strategic town of Qusayr, as the rebels said hundreds of fighters had broken through army lines to join the battle.

President Bashar al-Assad, meanwhile, said he was "very confident" of victory in Syria's conflict and threatened Israel with retaliation for any attack, in an interview aired late on Thursday.

In Istanbul, the deeply divided opposition announced agreement on expanding its membership to include more representatives of fighters and activists on the ground following accusations it was out of touch.

But despite extending its talks for five days longer than scheduled, the National Coalition put off until June the election of a new leader and the formation of an interim rebel government.

Assad, whose forces are battling alongside fighters of Lebanon's Shiite movement Hezbollah to recapture Qusayr, said his regime would defeat the revolt which has raged in Syria since March 2011.

"There is a world war being waged against Syria and the policy of (anti-Israeli) resistance... (but) we are very confident of victory," he said in the interview with Hezbollah's Al-Manar television.

Syrian state television said troops and Hezbollah fighters had captured the Arjun district in the north of Qusayr on Thursday, leaving rebels holed up in the town little chance to escape.

The town controls supply routes vital to both sides and access between Damascus and the Mediterranean.

The Syrian opposition said Friday that hundreds of rebel reinforcements, most close to the Muslim Brotherhood, have reached the town to try to repel the army's assault.

"Around 1,000 fighters from across Syria" have penetrated the rebel stronghold near the Lebanese border, the National Coalition's interim leader George Sabra told reporters in Istanbul.

"Hundreds" of rebels have broken through army lines near the village of Shamsinn, northeast of Qusayr, after losing 11 fighters, according to Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Coalition has appealed for the rescue of 1,000 civilians wounded in Qusayr, which Assad's forces have been trying to seize back in an all-out offensive since May 19.

Lebanese Prime Minister Tamman Salam, meanwhile, said his country should stay out of the Syrian conflict, in an interview published in Friday's edition of French daily Le Figaro.

"We must at all price preserve national unity," he said. "And obviously, Hezbollah's military involvement is not helping matters."

Assad threatened Israel with renewed fighting on the Golan Heights where a UN-patrolled armistice line has separated the two armies since Israel captured much of the strategic plateau in the 1967 Middle East war.

"There is clear popular pressure to open a new front of resistance in the Golan," he said, echoing a call from Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah.

"There are several factors, including repeated Israeli aggression," he added, referring to reported Israeli air strikes on Syria.

"We have informed all the parties who have contacted us that we will respond to any Israeli aggression next time."

There was no immediate comment on Assad's remarks from Israel, which has said it does not want to provoke a military "escalation" with Syria, but will not allow it to transfer strategic arms to groups like Hezbollah.

-- Three Westerners killed: Observatory --

-----------------------------------

Assad appeared to imply in the interview that Russia had already delivered some of the promised S-300 missiles that have sparked particular concern in Israel.

"All the agreements with Russia will be honoured and some already have been recently," he said.

But Russia's Vedomosti and Kommersant newspapers said Moscow may not deliver the missile systems to Damascus this year and rejected claims the weapons had already arrived.

Washington warned that any such weapon deliveries from Moscow would only prolong the conflict, which activists say has killed more than 94,000 people.

Moscow said earlier this week that it would honour the contract to deliver the S-300s to Syria, saying the missiles were a "stabilising factor" which could act as a deterrent against foreign intervention.

Russia could also supply 10 ultra-modern MiG-29 fighter jets to Syria under a possible contract being discussed with a visiting delegation from Damascus, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.

The Observatory, meanwhile, reported that Syrian troops had killed three Westerners, including a US woman and a British man, both Muslims, near the border with Turkey on Wednesday.

"They were shot dead during an ambush in the Idlib region and the army found them with maps of military positions," said the monitoring group's director, Abdel Rahman.

On the diplomatic front, the United Nations said a preparatory meeting for a proposed international conference on the Syrian conflict would take place in Geneva next Wednesday, attended by Russian, US and UN officials.

Sapa leaves out so much information about the 3 westerners killed.

An American woman who converted to Islam after falling in love with an Arab immigrant has been killed fighting for opposition forces in Syria along with a UK national and another man, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed.

Nicole Lynn Mansfield, 33, was first identified by a Syrian television station, which broadcast images of her driver’s license photo. Mansfield is shown in the picture wearing an Islamic headscarf and listing her address in Flint, Michigan, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Syrian news report claimed she and British companions were shot by President Bashar Assad’s military.

Syrian government troops intensified an offensive Saturday to recapture a major rebel-held town near the Lebanese border, an opposition group said, prompting pleas to save trapped civilians.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that fierce clashes were taking place between government troops, backed by fighters from the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, against rebels on the outskirts of al-Kussair.

Both sides sustained unspecified casualties, the report said.

Troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the allied Hezbollah have been fighting for two weeks to regain control of al-Kussair, which lies on a major highway between the capital Damascus and the government-controlled cities of Tartous and Latakia.

The rebels, fighting to oust al-Assad, reportedly use the corridor to smuggle weapons from Lebanon.

"The international community must intervene to save the wounded inside al-Kussair," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said. "The people trapped inside lack in all medical essentials. The medical situation is catastrophic."

Opposition activists said rebels were trying to evacuate seriously wounded civilians from the town through corridors they established into neighbouring Lebanon, but were hampered by shelling attacks by Syrian forces.

The international community voiced concern over the situation inside al-Kussair.

"We are extremely alarmed by reports that thousands of civilians are trapped amidst the heavy fighting that has engulfed the besieged Syrian town of al-Kussair," UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a joint statement.

"We understand there may also be as many as 1,500 wounded people in urgent need of immediate evacuation for emergency medical treatment, and that the general situation in al-Kussair is desperate."

Amos and Pillay urged all sides fighting in the town to "agree to an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian agencies to evacuate the wounded and provide life-saving treatment and supplies."

In Brussels, a spokesperson said European Union chief diplomat Catherine Ashton was "deeply concerned at the ongoing fighting" in al-Kussair, which has "left many civilians in an extremely critical situation."

Ashton was "appalled at the level of violence in and around the city" and demanded tha "all parties ensure urgent and safe access to relevant organisations to ensure the evacuation of the wounded and civilians and to reach all those in need."

At least 20 rockets fired from Syria landed Saturday across the Lebanese border, forcing residents to flee their houses, Lebanese police said. Most of the rockets fell into the eastern mountain range near the region of al-Shaara. Others landed near al-Nasseriya, al-Nabi Sheet, and the outskirts of the town of Brital in the Bekka valley. All are strongholds of Hezbollah.

Shelling, presumably by rebel forces, has targeted Lebanese Shiite areas in the last week, after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed that his militia will continue cooperating with al-Assad's forces against Syrian rebels in al-Kussair.

Influential Sunni Muslim cleric Youssef al-Qaradawi has called on Sunnis to join rebels fighting the Damascus-based regime.

"Every Muslim who is trained to fight should be available. ... Iran is pushing people to stand by the Syrian regime, so we cannot stand idle," al-Qaradawi, an Egyptian theologian living in Qatar, told a rally in Doha.

Both predominately Shiite Iran and Hezbollah are staunch allies of al-Assad.

Most of the rebels fighting in Syria are Sunni Muslims, while the regime forces are mostly Alawite, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.Authors: Weedah Hamzah, Ramadan Al-Fatash
