The Syrian Conflict Thread

I like how the grants themselves are pretty much what funds the BBC World Service in its entirety.
... and managed by a trust.

The Royal Charter establishes that the Trust should have twelve trustees, including a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman and a member for each of the Home Nations of the United Kingdom.[1] Appointments to the BBC Trust are made by Queen in Council, on the recommendation of UK government ministers.

Another story with holes in it. This kids father gave his thumb print on a document signing him up for service in Syria. The child made no such agreement. Presumable neither are mentally challenged and asked what he was agreeing to since they replied the father was going to be a martyr? They also never explain how they arrived in Sweden if they were actually drafted!

Sometimes it's best to leave these dodgy stories cooked up in some CIA basement alone.

The Trust doesn't fund the BBC, the UK public does.

ps
Remember we were discussing funding, not control.

Around £245m, of which almost £240m runs the BBC World Service for the FCO.

Leaves around £5m grants out of £5 billion income... Yes, definitely state funded ;).

But that's state-funded? What am I missing?

Anyway, can British tax payers opt out of paying their TV license? Else it's basically just another tax like in SA, making it state-funded anyway.

Although I'm sure they don't have to bail out the BBC like we do with the SABC. :p

No "regular" russian troops took part in the Ukraine offensive either. They were all on "leave" acting in private capacity (with russian armoured vehicles) remember. Same story in Crimea.

With Crimea it was different, putin later admitted that he sent additional forces to disarm and neutralise Ukrainian bases

I'm kinda suspicious of the numbers considering how much Top Gear probably made overseas anyways.

The TV license is collected by goverment and is officially/legally regarded as a tax. Q.E.D

Yeah, but we both know they're not really targeting ISIS. That's just a cover for trying to bottle up Syria until Assad was gone.

Except that 9/10 weren't the targets just means that 9/10 weren't part of the mission.
An islamist faction leader has his name on a kill list. If his advisers, his body guards and his wife just happened to be with him when the opportunity arises to carry out that mission and put him in the ground, then they're just icing on the cake.

The TV license is signed up for by the individual. Yes, you can opt out, I did. I only needed the TV license temporarily because it seemed like the the only way that I could get proof of address to open a bank account, it wasn't for watching TV.
I can also access most of that content later on my PC for free anyway, if I want to.

Your tenants don’t need a TV Licence if they only watch downloaded or streamed TV AFTER it's been broadcast. This includes using websites like YouTube and Bebo, as well as ‘on demand’ internet services like iPlayer offering TV downloads or streaming.

If he was actually guilty of a crime beyond the fact that the Americans just didn't like him...

Point is, you could also bomb militants and then claim the civilians nearby were part of the "support" network such as bodyguards, family members etc. etc. So I don't find that argument particularly compelling.

Thousands flee new regime offensives in Syria

The United Nations is warning that tens of thousands have fled new regime offensives in Syria, as Russian air strikes are reported to have so far killed 370 people, many of them civilians.

The mass exodus is focused south of Syria’s second city of Aleppo, one of five areas where regime troops have launched renewed attacks since Russia began its air war last month.

Just yesterday, Russian air strikes in Syria's Latakia province killed a rebel commander and four other fighters from a group armed by President Bashar al-Assad's foreign enemies, a spokesman for the group said.

The attack on Monday evening marked the third time Russian war planes have targeted the First Coastal Division group since Moscow began its air strikes in support of President Bashar al-Assad on 30 Septmeber, the group's spokesman Fadi Ahmad said.

He said a further 15 civilians had been killed in the air strike in Jabal Akrad, a rural, mountainous area in the province. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier put the death toll at 45 rebels and civilians.

The First Coastal Division is one of several groups that have received foreign military support including US-made anti-tank missiles, the most potent weapon in the rebels' arsenal.

At the same time, rebels battling the Syrian army and its allies near Aleppo said they had received new supplies from states opposed to President Bashar al-Assad since the start of a major government offensive last week.

The Russians are there to support the current government of Assad, I don't know why there is such a lot of surprise when Assad's opponents are bombed.

A ceasefire is on the cards. Assad has said he's willing to go at elections. Russians have also said they're willing for something like that.

This is not an existential war between Nazi Germany and Mother Russia. This can be stopped and compromise can be reached. Of course it's too much for some who will get an attack of the vapours. Of course it is an existential war against ISIL. Those guys are not likely to compromise and join a power sharing govt. They're more radicalised than the Taliban and in fact are making in-roads against the Taliban too.
