As i said before since it talks about adding to its existing special forces then i think its to support the Kurds, its just CNN being liberal with the use of the word rebels. The Kurds have been very successful in fighting ISIS and the US is the only force consistently taking out high ranking ISIS and Al Qaeda leadership.

Fair enough, it could be the Kurds, but if they truly wanted to support them a much cheaper and more effective option would be to call off their dog Turkey ...

I have a suspicion that their dog has Rabies and doesn't respond to commands that well...

I said call off their dog, not ask it nicely, it is well within their power and one can only assume they don't believe it is in their interest if they don't do anything more than ask.

Well besides putting pressure on them like they have, they could sanction them but we know that's not going to happen as it would basically destroy NATO. Turkey is far too important for NATO.

The US is on record stating they forced the EU to implement sanctions against Russia. Sanctions that are hurting the EU economically especially in agriculture.

Now if they're willing to do that to a much closer and much less volatile ally such as the EU, why not Turkey which is clearly in desperate need of some tough love? Hell they don't even need to do the dirty work themselves, put pressure on the EU to take Turkey's potential EU-membership off the table or at the very least take the multiple billion Euro bribes for "stemming the migrant flow" off the table or do a few things via the UN etc etc

There are many things that can be done without risking NATO, yet all they do is ask.

I think the US realise they are dealing with a nutcase in Erdogan, sanctions could tip him over the edge so it's kids gloves treatment, though they should realise appeasement didn't work with another nutcase in the 1930's.

NarrowBandFtw, i think Dave has a point in that dealing with Turkey is different to dealing with the EU. Perhaps you are right though, maybe they could do more.

That may well be the case, but history has taught us all treating nutcases with kids gloves doesn't work. Bin Laden, Sadam and Hitler for example. Who would bet against Erdogan ever spinning completely out of control if not reigned in more aggressively?

EDIT: only now realised you already made that point in your post, I blame the meds I took to battle the flu today :D

Not sure whats supposed to be funny about that.

The fact that he didn't think to bite his nails off or that he uses overwhelming force when he scratches himself.

But I guess people do strange things on paper to demonize Assad.
