The Syrian Conflict Thread

I doubt anyone will be too upset, just a cheap reconnaissance drone from the look of it.
No so cheap but you can't speak to it over the radio as the Turks were trying to do.

Also tricky to shoot down. A Stinger warhead would not be very cost effective.

End of US dominance. That's not a bad thing.

WASHINGTON — Two weeks of air and missile strikes in Syria have given Western intelligence and military officials a deeper appreciation of the transformation that Russia’s military has undergone under President Vladimir V. Putin, showcasing its ability to conduct operations beyond its borders and providing a public demonstration of new weaponry, tactics and strategy.

The strikes have involved aircraft never before tested in combat, including the Sukhoi Su-34 strike fighter, which NATO calls the Fullback, and a ship-based cruise missile fired more than 900 miles from the Caspian Sea, which, according to some analysts, surpasses the American equivalent in technological capability.

Russia’s jets have struck in support of Syrian ground troops advancing from areas under the control of the Syrian government, and might soon back an Iranian-led offensive that appeared to be forming in the northern province of Aleppo on Wednesday. That coordination reflects what American officials described as months of meticulous planning behind Russia’s first military campaign outside former Soviet borders since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Read an interesting article in the New York Times: Syria is basically Russia showing Western Countries, how it has modernised its military.

Things look like they heating up in Syria!

At least Russia openly state that they own the network; and are dishing out news. Whether it is 'propaganda' or not is perception.

Could well be Russian propaganda, but it would be nice if the other news agencies, that are "independent and unbiased" are also placed under the magnifying glass.

For example, fox news is a propaganda news agency owned by Rupert Murdoch.

In England, you can see that during the elections, with the threat of people turning their votes towards the labour party, almost all the news agencies there showed their true colours. Publishing on the front pages, not to vote for the labour party, and the fears of "repercussions" of doing so.

They came out, clearly biased.

So if you going to question things, question everything.

Funny that you say that. I just recently watched a so-called documentary about Fox News and how they do news, even with issues within their own country, the roll of propaganda and how it can distort perceptions. This could be said for many news outlets. Was quite interesting.

It's nothing to do with western countries. It's saying 'We are open for business. This is the demo. Buy now for an early adapter discount'
Russia keeps its capabilities under wraps usually. I guess it became necessary here, especially the cruise missiles.

I'm sure if a serious war broke out some very interesting and awesome weapons would come out.

Oil prices are down, they need alternate sources of income and they are capitalists now.

They are pulling a 'Patriot missile v1 sales pitch' kind of thing here

Syrian army launches Aleppo offensive with Iranian support

Syrian troops backed by Hezbollah and Iranian fighters launched an offensive south of Aleppo on Friday, expanding the army's counter-attack against rebels across western Syria with support from Russian air strikes.

The assault means the army is now pressing insurgents on several fronts near Syria's main cities in the west, control of which would secure President Bashar al-Assad's hold on power even if the east of the country is still held by Islamic State

I'm wondering if it was actually shot down, there is no evidence of damage you would expect if shot down, it could have malfunctioned and crashed and the Turks are just claiming the downing to look good.

Demoralized ISIS militants deserting en masse amid Russian airstrikes - Defense Ministry

Growing numbers of Islamic State militants in Syria have become discontent with their command and deserted the ranks of the militant group amid the Russian anti-terror operation, Moscow's Defense Ministry said on Friday.

"The majority of armed gangs are demoralized. Discontent with field commanders is growing amid the fighters, and there are instances of disobeying orders," senior Russian General Andrey Kartapolov told a media briefing.

Cases of desertion among the jihadists are no longer isolated, with them now fleeing "en masse," the colonel general, who heads operations in the Russian general staff, added.

To monitor the situation in the area, drone reconnaissance has been intensified.

These drones are basic and cheap, they were regularly shot down with small arms fire in Ukraine. Here is a picture of perhaps the same type of drone (Orlan-10) shot down in Ukraine

A video of Ukrainian vdv shooting one down - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAUQogoBZDQ

Im not sure how the Turks are reporting they shot this one down, but i dont think they need to engage it with aircraft to do so.

And here's a Ukrainian BUK shooting separatist drones.

Other than the problem of telling them apart from the normal refugees...
Considering the fact that Tukey was playing buddy-buddy with ISIS up until recently by sharing intel with them etc. in order to get rid of Assad, I don't think Turkey is going to be too worried about those refugees. They probably have other things they'd prefer to bomb instead.

Form them into units and set them off fighting against the PKK ;).
