The Syrian Conflict Thread

Still the same group of terrorists, does the name really matter?

Just like Daesh = ISIS = ISIL = IS, JaN = JFaS

You miss the point, if the journalist doesn't even comprehend that JaN changed name in July I'm less inclined to believe what he writes. Any decent journo should know the basic facts and use the correct terminology.

Kind of like the US not comprehending it was merely a name change? Also, most media outlets use any of the prior names interchangeably, hence my ISIS, ISIL, Daesh, IS example, you can easily find current articles that use any of those names, why is it something new if current articles use JaN and JFaS in the same way?

As you stated:
Jabhat Fateh al-Sham was only recently designated a terrorist organisation by the US.

So mighty USA thought JFaS was really a new group and had to evaluate them first before designating them as terrorists? How many weapons did they supply to them during this potential "evaluation period"?

Or perhaps the German audience knows JaN, but doesn't know enough about Syrian politics to connect the new name with the old.

Just like we keep talking about ISIS the whole time despite all their name changes too. It's almost like you're trying to find fault with the report.

Edit: Beaten to the punch. :o

John Kerry Threatens to Suspend Talks With Russia on Syria

“The secretary made clear that the United States and its partners hold Russia responsible for this situation, including the use of incendiary and bunker buster bombs in an urban environment, a drastic escalation that puts civilians at great risk,”

----

U.S. officials earlier this year said they would consider supplying Syrian rebels with more powerful weaponry if a cease-fire doesn’t remain in place.

“None of those options are better for the Syrian people than an immediate cessation of hostilities that can be applied nationwide, the delivery of humanitarian aid and just as quickly the resumption of political talks,” Mr. Kirby said. “The policy is we continue to support a diplomatic solution rather than a military one—that doesn’t mean that as a government we aren’t still discussing other options and alternatives.”

---

Mr. Kirby said the U.S. hopes that the incentive of closer military cooperation as well as rising costs to the Russian military as the conflict in Syria drags on could alter Russia’s course.

“Russia will continue to send troops home in body bags and they will continue to lose resources, even perhaps more aircraft,” Mr. Kirby said.

What a clever idea, up the weaponry in the hands of the rebels and Russia then ups the weaponry it is using and supplying to the Syrian government. And even more civilians are killed in the more intense fighting and bombing.

Wait, you think either the Americans or the Russians actually give a **** about the Syrian civilians?

It's just PR man.

Yup, it will just make the situation worse.

True, just their geopolitical goals.

You'll notice I didn't mention that I thought it would worry any of the belligerents, just that the policy would see more people killed ;).

When the US and Russia decide this is no longer challenging and start shooting at each other. That's when we've got a problem.

I doubt it will be that bad, more like Afghanistan v2.
I don't think anyone's trying to start ww3, but sh#t happens, and sometimes that forces escalations.

It's a question of how desperate the Americans are to stop the Russians from building the pipeline they want.

Syrian government forces and rebels fought battles in the center of Aleppo and north of the city on Friday, a week into a Russian-backed offensive by the Syrian army to take the entire area, a war monitor and sources on both sides said.

There were conflicting accounts on the outcome of Friday's fighting. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a Syrian military source said government forces had captured territory north of Aleppo and buildings in the city center.

seems they're really taking those threats Kerry made seriously ... :D

WHO: 338 killed in eastern Aleppo in past week

Fighting in Syria’s besieged eastern Aleppo has killed 338 people since 23 September including 106 children, and 846 have been wounded, including 261 children, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday.

Russia and Syrian government forces launched a campaign to recapture the rebel-held sector of Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city, this month, abandoning a ceasefire a week after it took effect.

“We are asking for four things: stop the killing, stop attacks on health care, let the sick and wounded out and let the aid in,” Rick Brennan, WHO’s head of emergency risk management and humanitarian response, told a UN briefing in Geneva.
Brennan said he did not have details on the kinds of injuries, but it was obvious what to expect.

“There will be shrapnel wounds, there will be blast wounds, there will be burns, penetrating injuries to the head, chest and abdomen. There will be lost limbs, there will be fractures. The range of injuries is pretty predictable.”
No hospital was able to take hundreds of patients at a time, he said.
Brennan said WHO had had supplies for 140,000 people ready for weeks, but the security situation prevented it from taking essential medical equipment into the city.

Asked if WHO had permission from Damascus to send in medical supplies if the security situation allowed, he said negotiations to get access were continuing and he met Syria's deputy minister of health last week.
