I'm struggling to understand why this thread is still ongoing....
Other than moaning about the fast internet in the EU....
As much as thats nice, the EU can't offer alot of the things we take for granted here in SA (and no, I'm not trying to derail this thread... just pointing it out)

I'm in the process of moving home and have a similar issue. Currently living in the city I have 4Meg ADSL, moving out I wasn't sure even if I would get ADSL. Used the availability checker and the existing owners phone number I could check the exchange, however as you say that just says it's enabled.
I did have a luck with the Telkom rep who I asked to please investigate the exchange speeds and was told that it is rated for 512 at the mo but what she suggests is apply for the highest and if the exchange doesn't support it, they will drop you to the next band and you will not have to pay a downgrade fee as it is their exchanges fault, not your decision. Apparently they aren't certain what a exchange can handle between 512 and 4Meg until they actually go and activate it.

It's not the exchange itself but the distance from the exchange to your new home and the condition of the phyiscal copper cable connection!

OK -- you are IN the town ( WHY Ellisras I might ask ??? )
IF the Telkom exchange in the town has DSLAMS then you are pretty much assured of ADSL.
Surely in a small town NO-ONE is far from the exchange ???
What I would suggest -- find out where your local Telkom exchange is -- should not be that difficult -- the exchange buildings stick out like a sore thumb.
Go to the gate and ask to see the person in charge. Normally they will call the person to the gate / ask you in
Take it from there -- you are far more likely to get a decent answer from the people that actually do the work than someone sitting behind a desk.
IF you cannot get ADSL -- start looking at a leased line -- pretty much goes anywhere.
I assume you wife is earning EUROS / DOLLARS -- in which case line should be affordable. ( You already spending R 2000.00 )
LEAVE the story about EU / UK / AMERICA
This is AFRICA -- GET USED TO IT -- YOUR decision to be HERE ( actually in the back of beyond )

I suppose UNISA is a South African University ??? there certainly seem to be a lot of HORWITZ's though.

Yes, I live outside Ellisras on a farm, which is on the town boundary...
