The Tesla Model 3 Thread

I got a mail today from Tesla, they're promoting 2nd hand cars for sale.

The price on the 2019 models with around 50,000kms on the clock is so damn close to new price...the only difference is they're available now - instead of the 3-6 month waiting period.

It's annoying, but it IS great to see them holding their value.

That said, a mate of mine in the UK just traded in his audi TT for a Tesla, with a 3 month waiting list. 2nd hand car prices are insane.

Best-selling cars in Europe

Tesla Model 3 becomes the first EV and the first car produced outside of Europe to top best-sellers list

The best-selling car in Europe was an EV for the first time ever in September, as the Tesla Model 3 surpassed the Volkswagen Golf.

The saloon also became the first ever car from a manufacturer based outside of Europe to become the best-seller. A total of 24,600 units were registered in September, equivalent to a 2.6% market share.

Tesla's strong performance in September continues a strong trend for the American firm, as the month on average has accounted for 68% of its third quarter deliveries since 2018.

Electrified vehicle ownership grew 44% to 221,500 units, while the registrations of diesels decreased by 51% to 167,000 units.

“Dealers continue to face issues with the availability of new cars due to the chip shortage,” said automotive data firm Jato Dynamics. “As a result, unwilling to wait more than a year for a new car, many consumers have turned to the used car market.”

Tesla becomes first $1tn car firm as Hertz orders 100,000 Model 3s

Deal worth around £3bn means company will have largest rental fleet of electric cars in North America

Hertz will have the largest EV rental fleet in North America after the purchase of 100,000 Tesla Model 3s in a deal worth $4.2 billion (£3bn).

The vehicle rental firm will also install “thousands” of EV chargers throughout its location network.

The move means 20% of the company’s rental fleet will be battery electric by the end of 2022.

The investment by Hertz meant Tesla became the first car manufacturer to reach a $1 trillion (£725bn) valuation on Monday, with shares in the company rising by 12.6%.

It also becomes one of only five companies globally that are currently trading above this valuation milestone.

"Electric vehicles are now mainstream, and we've only just begun to see rising global demand and interest," said Hertz interim CEO Mark Fields.

Tesla Model 3 becomes first electric car to top Europe's sales charts

Tesla's Model 3 was the top-selling vehicle in Europe last month, the first time an electric car has outsold rival models with petrol engines.

The US carmaker's most affordable vehicle beat out cars including Renault's Clio and Volkswagen's Golf, according to Jato Dynamics. The Model 3's performance partly reflects "Tesla's intensive end-of-quarter sales push," the research firm said in a report released Monday.

Taking the monthly sales crown is a major milestone for EVs and another sign that the automotive industry is accelerating its pivot away from the combustion engine. It's also the first time a car made outside of Europe has claimed the region's top spot.

Governments are offering generous incentives to entice buyers to trade in combustion-engine cars, with fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounting for 23% of the market in September, a near doubling from 2020.

Still, the development comes against a grim backdrop for European vehicle sales because the global semiconductor shortage is crimping production and delaying shipments to customers. New-car registrations dropped by a quarter last month and dealers are struggling to fill lots.

"The growing popularity of EVs is encouraging, but sales are not yet strong enough to offset the big declines seen across other segments," Jato said.

Tesla shipped 24 591 Model 3s to customers in September, a 58% increase from last year.

Unfortunately I haven't been following this thread - anybody have one of these in Cape Town yet?

Nope. There’s only 1 Tesla in the country. It’s a model X and is basically just a show car, they’re not selling here.

Tesla to open Superchargers to all EV drivers in new trial

Pilot scheme in the Netherlands will gives non-Tesla EV drivers access to select Supercharger sites

Tesla has begun a pilot scheme that allows drivers of other manufacturers' electric vehicles to use 10 of its Supercharger charging sites in the Netherlands.

The EV firm's dedicated Tesla-only Supercharger network has grown to include more than 25,000 fast-charging points worldwide and is considered a key part of its success.

But there's growing pressure from regulators in various countries to create an industry-standard 'universal' charging network, allowing all EV drivers to access any fast-charging site.

Tesla boss Elon Musk recently hinted that the American manufacturer was preparing to open the network to drivers of other EVs.

In a statement, Tesla said that "it has always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs and by doing so encourage more drivers to go electric".

It added: "This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy."

Under the non-Tesla Supercharger pilot scheme, 10 stations in the Netherlands will be made accessible to Dutch non-Tesla drivers through the Tesla app. The pilot will be open only to drivers from the Netherlands, and they will need to have a car with a CCS charging plug.

I was aware - had hoped by now some rich, impatient person had said 'fux it' and brought one in themselves

I think someone already did. Paid something like R2.2m for a base model 3 in Durban. FiestaST linked it somewhere.

Tesla boss: $4.2 billion deal with Hertz has not been signed

Elon Musk clarifies status of landmark transaction which sent Tesla's value soaring above $1 trillion

Tesla boss Elon Musk has clarified that the landmark deal between his EV firm and rental giant Hertz, which made headlines last week, has not yet been officially finalised.

Hertz publicly detailed the purchase of 100,000 Tesla Model 3s in a deal worth $4.2 billion (£3bn), which prompted a huge spike in Tesla's valuation, making it the first car manufacturer ever to reach a value of $1 trillion (£725bn), with shares in the company rising by 12.6%.

At the time, Tesla was one of five companies globally trading above this valuation milestone.

But now, a week later, Musk has taken to twitter to confirm that the deal has not yet been signed, and suggested that the purchase of 100,000 Model 3s would not have any financial impact above what is normal for the brand.

Commenting on a graph showing Tesla's skyrocketing share price, Musk said: "If any of this is based on Hertz, I’d like to emphasize that no contract has been signed yet. Tesla has far more demand than production, therefore we will only sell cars to Hertz for the same margin as to consumers.

"Hertz deal has zero effect on our economics."

That really is telling, having such demand that you can apparently be treating a customer for 100,000 cars the same as a customer only wanting 1. Must be a nice position for a business to be in.

To be fair, it's the underlying part of their business model.

You won't find a Tesla car commercial. Even Elon paid full retail price for his own model S. His brother, Kimbal, also had to cough up full price for the 5th ever built Model 3.
