The Tesla Model 3 Thread

Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD launched in China with 830 km CLTC range

Tesla has just launched the long-awaited Long Range RWD version of the Model 3 in China with a price tag of RMB 269,500, which is the equivalent of just under $38,000. The advertised range is 830 km as per the CLTC rating, which is more optimistic than WLTP.

Still, the new Model 3 LR RWD sets a new brand record as the longest-range vehicle in the company's portfolio. Additionally, the Performance AWD configuration also gets a slight improvement in range, now 647 km from 623 km.

The rear axle is now powered by a 3D6 motor with 225 kW, while the LFP CATL batteries are swapped out for LG's NCM cells with 78.4 kWh capacity. The new battery now supports 250 kW fast DC charging.

Tesla does a U-turn and reinstalls turn signal stalk on Model 3 in China

In another reversal of a controversial design choice (yoke steering wheel was the last one), Tesla has brought back the humble turn signal stalk to its Model 3 sedan in China. The automaker, known for its minimalist and often polarizing interior designs, is now including the traditional stalk as standard equipment on all new Model 3 vehicles sold in the country, effectively ending a two-year experiment with steering wheel-mounted buttons.

Tesla first removed the stalks from the Model 3 in September 2023 with the launch of its updated version. The change also saw the gear selector stalk disappear. Drivers were instead to indicate turns using buttons on the left side of the steering wheel and select gears by swiping on the central touchscreen.

The idea was met with immediate criticism from drivers and reviewers, who found the buttons awkward and unintuitive, particularly when navigating roundabouts or making turns that required hand-over-hand steering.

Information now live on Tesla's Chinese website confirms the change. All variants of the popular electric car, from the base rear-wheel drive to the high-performance all-wheel drive model, will leave the Shanghai factory with the familiar stalk reinstalled.

For the thousands of customers who have already purchased a stalk-less Model 3, Tesla is offering a solution. Current owners can have a turn signal stalk retrofitted at a service center for RMB 2,499, which is approximately €299. According to the company's mobile app, this service will be available in mid-September for Model 3s produced after February 7, 2025. An option for vehicles built before that date is expected to follow later. There is no plan to reintroduce the steering column-mounted gear selector.

There’s a new entry-level Tesla Model 3 Standard to match its Y sibling

Tesla's small electric car starts at $36,990 and does 321 miles on a charge

Just when we thought the Model Y ‘Standard’ was going to be the new entry-level Tesla, they immediately go and announce something even cheaper.

Yep, the Model 3 has also been given the bargain basement treatment, and we now know that it’ll cost $36,990 in the US (that’s $3,000 less than the Y Standard). Rumours are it will arrive in Europe at some point, although how much it’ll set you back if it eventually reaches our shores is yet to be confirmed.

Like the Model Y Standard, this 3 also gets a smaller battery than the newly renamed ‘Premium’ trim. Tesla doesn’t give out capacity figures, but it means a claimed 321 miles on a single charge, with a single motor powering the rear wheels for a 0-60mph time of 5.8 seconds.

So, what’s different if you go for the Standard saloon over the Standard crossover? As well as keeping hold of that extra $3,000, you’ll also retain the panoramic glass roof and erm, that’s about it as far as we can tell.

Tesla now offers turn signal stalk retrofit for the Model 3 in the US

Tesla has now started selling a turn signal stalk retrofit for the Model 3 cars that don't have it, following the removal of the stalk with the refreshed Model 3. Clearly, the company has finally heard the feedback loud and clear - people want the turn signal stalk.

At this rate, who knows - maybe we'll get another stalk with gear selection in the future? Let's not get our hopes up. In the meantime, in the US you can purchase the turn signal stalk retrofit for an eye watering $595.

This is only compatible with Model 3 cars assembled in 2024 and 2025, and the pack you're purchasing includes the turn signal stalk itself, a new steering wheel, a steering wheel column module, and the installation cost.
