Can't remember if I posted this, but the other day the boss let me drive the Model3 on the open road. I even got to switch on the autopilot mode and it's the weirdest thing I've ever experienced in a car. Just sitting there not touching anything and it kept itself in lane around turns etc and sped up/slowed down accordingly. I can only imagine what a pleasure that must be in JHB traffic where you have to creep along.
On top of that he was away at a job site and phoned me up to ask if I could drive the tesla to a supercharger for him. He unlocked the car and started it for me from wherever he happened to be. I drove it to the supercharger and plugged it in, and he then activated the payment etc. all from his phone somewhere else. He picked me up from the supercharging station and we had lunch. Drove him back 25mins later when it was near full.
It feels crazy futuristic.
I can't wait to see what the modelY has to offer.

Tesla Model Y spotted driving side by side with Model 3, other cars in best size comparison yet
With the Tesla Model Y slated to hit the road next summer, we’re getting more and more sightings of prototypes out and about. Most of these sightings are around Tesla’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters, though we’ve seen the car as far away as Washington State and Michigan.
Thanks to Tesla’s dashcam feature, we’ve now got a three-minute-long video of the Model Y driving in San Jose. Better yet, for much of the drive it’s side by side with a Model 3, demonstrating an excellent comparison between the two vehicles.
Teslas driving on roads in San Jose is not an uncommon occurrence. The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the highest rates of Tesla ownership in the world. As mentioned in our first dashcam Model Y spotting post, now that Tesla’s dashcam software is out, there are a lot of constantly running video cameras driving around the Bay Area ready to capture new sightings of prototypes.
So we were bound to see a Tesla prototype, driving next to a current Tesla vehicle, and being recorded by a Tesla, sooner or later.

Plans to set up in UK scratched as Elon Musk announces Berlin-based manufacturing, engineering and battery site
Tesla will build its first European factory in Berlin, Germany, boss Elon Musk has confirmed.
The facility will include an engineering and design centre and will be used to manufacture cars, batteries and powertrains. The first car to be built there will be the upcoming small SUV, the Tesla Model Y, according to Musk.
"Everyone knows that German engineering is outstanding and that's part of the reason we are locating our Gigafactory Europe in Germany," said Musk.
Tesla has previously said its European factory would open in 2021, although Musk is known for announcing optimistic dates for building facilities from scratch.
The announcement dashes hopes that the facility could be constructed in Britain, something Musk had previously suggested was likely.

A new Tesla auto factory to serve the European market will be based in Germany, chief executive Elon Musk said Tuesday.
Musk said during a ceremony at Germany's Golden Steering Wheel awards that the new "Gigafactory" would be "in the Berlin area."
He said the company planned the facility "near the new airport" in Berlin and that Tesla would also set up a design center in the area.
"Everyone knows that German engineering is outstanding and that's part of the reason we are locating our Gigafactory Europe in Germany," he said on stage.
"Giga Berlin," Musk tweeted, bookending the words with heart emojis.
"Will build batteries, powertrains & vehicles, starting with Model Y," he added in another tweet.
Tesla is estimated to have some 30 percent of the European market for battery-powered cars.

In a bit of shocking news, CEO Elon Musk just moved production and deliveries of Tesla’s second crossover, the Tesla Model Y, up six months sooner, breaking a bad habit of delayed promises.
In a letter to investors, Musk announced the Model Y will go into production two whole seasons ahead of schedule, moving the date up from fall of this year to spring, according to The Verge.
The Model Y debuted less than a year ago, promising a crossover that’s essentially just a slightly bigger version of the Tesla Model 3, but still smaller than the Tesla Model X SUV.
Update, Jan. 29 5:45 p.m.: The Model Y will now also ship with more range than initially promised, up to 315 miles from the previous estimate of just 280 miles.

It's such a bugger to actually get over the mental block of getting one.
It's going to cost me about 4000kr per month, which is a lot. But I'll be saving about 1000kr in fuel a month, then another 400kr in etolls and a whole bunch on servicing. Over a 5yr period it's a massive saving, but month to month it's still a little pricey.
Then again, getting any kind of SUV 2nd hand will be close to that price anyway. So unless I buy an old skedonk, it's not so much about getting a Model Y as it is about getting any decent 2nd car at all.

Tesla posted its second quarterly profit in a row as vehicle deliveries hit a record and the company said it would comfortably make more than half a million units this year, pushing its shares to new highs.
The delivery forecast, higher by more than a third than last year’s production, suggests Tesla is looking at a steadier chapter after years of steep losses, production troubles and clashes between chief executive Elon Musk and US regulators.
The electric carmaker’s stock, which has nearly doubled in the past year, jumped 13 percent after hours on Wednesday, cracking the $600 mark for the first time.
Tesla said that the manufacturing process at its new Shanghai factory, which started delivering Model 3 sedans a month ago, was running as expected and that it would increase production of the mass-market cars because of strong demand in China.
The $2 billion Shanghai factory is key to Tesla’s growth strategy. There it aims to produce 150000 Model 3 sedans and later increase output to 250000 a year, including the Model Y.
Tesla initially did not expect to make the Model Y until late 2020 and then moved up the forecast to this summer, finally beating that deadline by several months.

Tesla has announced that production of its Model Y electric compact SUV has begun, with the first customer deliveries expected in March.
The company’s fourth mainstream model, which was unveiled at its Los Angeles design centre by CEO Elon Musk, was originally expected to start production towards the end of 2020 - a date that was subsequently brought forward to summer 2020 late last year.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk used the company's fourth quarter financial results to reveal that the all-wheel drive, Long Range version of the electric SUV would have would have an extended range of 315 miles on the EPA test cycle, up from the 280 miles stated at the car's reveal.
The Model Y will be manufactured in the company's Fremont factory in California, not its Gigafactory facility in Reno, Nevada as originally predicted. From 2021, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory will also start production for the Chinese market. Production will be gradual, according to Musk, with capacity increased from mid-2020 and an eventual target of 500,000 Model 3 and Model Y per year.
The Model Y takes design cues from both the Model 3 saloon and Model X large SUV, with a glass panoramic roof and optional seven-seat layout. It doesn't retain the gullwing doors found on the more expensive Model X, instead using pillarless doors like the Model 3 and Model S.
The crossover is around 10% larger than the Model 3, with which it shares a platform and as much as 75% of components, making it close to the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in size. Musk said the Model Y had “the functionality of an SUV but rides like a sports car”, with a low centre of gravity and drag coefficient of 0.23Cd.

Manual shows Tesla Model Y can have a roof rack, but what about a tow hitch?
The Model Y Owner’s Manual hit the internet as Tesla started Model Y deliveries on Friday. We found some good new info from the manual, including the promise of a roof rack accessory. But unfortunately, another highly-anticipated accessory, a tow hitch, isn’t mentioned.
There were a few exciting revelations from the manual. The Model Y has a heat pump, for one, which should help with winter range. It also has some pretty cool storage options and a built-in inductive phone charger. And we finally know how big it is, which we’d been wondering about for quite some time.
But will all that extra space and interior storage come along with better exterior storage than the 3 (and the S/X)? The 3 can get a roof rack (and tow hitch in EU), the S can get a roof rack, and the X can get a tow hitch. Will the Y finally be able to get both exterior storage options?
For the roof rack at least, it will. This has been a highly-anticipated option for the Model Y, since it’s more “crossover-SUV-like”, and more likely for people to drive it in rougher conditions compared to the Model 3.
