The Tesla Model Y Thread

I saw a Tesla in Centurion on Thursday arvi. I wasn’t aware you could import them.

Tesla's European sales skid by as much as 70%

Tesla is facing a huge downturn in European sales. The latest data reveals a decline like never before, especially in Germany that once was the most important market for the company. The reasons might be complex, but the numbers paint a clear picture: Tesla is facing a serious challenge in Europe.

Tesla's German deliveries plummeted in February by a whopping 70% compared to last year. Only 1,429 new Teslas were registered, in stark contrast to over 6,000 delivered in February the year before. And this dramatic drop is not isolated - France, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden have also reported big decreases in Tesla sales.

In February, Tesla's total European sales were down by over 40% compared to the previous year. The UK was the only country that showed a slight increase, when most other major markets experienced substantial declines. The Netherlands and Portugal also reported decreased sales, with Portugal seeing a significant drop to just 547 deliveries. Spain was showing a slight improvement over January, but it is still down 44% year-to-date.

One explanation for the decline is the new Model Y changeover. Unfortunately, data suggests that this is not the sole factor. Model 3 sales are also down, with Germany seeing a 40% decrease and France a 60% decrease, despite the recent Model 3 refresh. This suggests that the issue goes beyond model transitions.

Adding complexity, Tesla CEO Elon Musk's political endorsements in Germany may have played a role. Musk's support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) during the recent elections appears to have alienated a lot of consumers. The plunge in Tesla registrations in Germany seems to have followed Musk's actions, all while the overall EV registrations in the country increased by 31%.

Tesla's revamped Model Y sees strong early interest in China with 200,000 units ordered

It looks like Tesla's new Model Y is getting some serious traction in China. According to local reports, the new model attracted 200,000 pre-orders since its January 10th debut. A portion of these orders are refundable, but the sheer volume suggests significant consumer interest in the updated electric SUV. These numbers are good news for Tesla's investors waiting to see what happens as the company plans to introduce the highly anticipated Cybertruck later this year.

The revamped Model Y, sold in China as the "Launch Series," initially offered two variants: a rear-wheel-drive model priced at RMB 263,500 (approximately €32,790) and a long-range all-wheel-drive version at RMB 303,500 (€37,720). These limited-time offerings, available until February 28th, included an extended warranty of two years or an extra 40,000 kilometers. After the Launch Series concluded, Tesla began selling the standard version of the new Model Y on March 1st, maintaining the same pricing but without the added warranty.

Delivery times vary depending on the chosen model. Customers ordering the rear-wheel-drive version can expect a wait of 2-4 weeks, while the long-range all-wheel-drive version has a longer lead time of 6-10 weeks, according to Tesla's Chinese website. Interestingly, the long-range version has seen a higher conversion rate from pre-orders to actual purchases.

Tesla is pushing for advanced driving features with a software update, version 2024.45.32.12, rolling out just before deliveries started, bringing FSD-like smart driving capabilities to eligible vehicles. However, Tesla salespeople are advising customers to hold off on purchasing the full FSD package, priced at RMB 64,000. They cite concerns about the system's performance in China, and suggest that a monthly subscription model may be introduced in the future.

I’m considering a the new Tesla Model Y on salary sacrifice. I’m just not sure it’s worth it. Wife does 90 miles round trip to work 3 x a week. Would the Tesla be cheaper to run if we include charging it than keeping the paid off Seat?

cc @Sinbad - How do I work out net cost to me on this? (Can’t ask employer as I’ll only start with them in a few months) I’m in higher tax rate if that makes a difference.

The running cost on octopus intelligent is under 2p a mile.

You'd need to get a quote on what the lease will cost, they vary dependant on interest rate and the amount of mileage permitted.

From a tax point of view, you deduct the lease cost from your gross salary. So the net cost is basically your lease cost minus whatever your tax rate is. Check whether your employer still pays your pension based on your full package, or whether the sacrifice is deducted from that calculation as well.

Insurance should be included which is a big bonus as no claim discounts here are weird, they accumulate per vehicle, so whatever you have on your seat would not count for another car.

Practically zero maintenance. From a running cost point of view it's really stupid cheap. Just sucks that it's essentially a guaranteed buyback product with a huge balloon, and the repayments don't affect your credit and you may not have the option to buy the vehicle at the end of the term. Took me a while to be ready to accept no asset at the end of the contract.

The no asset at the end of contract will take time to get used to for sure. But you could have a new EV every couple of years. Maybe it makes sense?

Thanks I’ll check with employee in a couple months and see if it’s worth it. Cost of saving on fuel on the Seat might cancel out from costs of ownership of EV.

Eh if I save £200 on fuel but pay £200 more for the lease for EV. It’s not saving me money.

Tesla is becoming so popular they need large numbers of police to control the adoring crowds wanting to visit these days…

Even more crispy swasticars.

A Colorado police chief blasted the release of a suspect on bond who allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at vehicles and spray-painted “Nazi cars” at a Tesla dealership — after yet another arson incident occurred at the same business.

Just after midnight Friday, Loveland police officers responded to an arson call at the local Tesla dealership, where they found an incendiary device between two cars on the property had caught fire and put “several occupants inside Tesla at risk,” according to the police department.

The scene smelled strongly of gasoline, and several vehicles were damaged by what appeared to be thrown rocks, officers said.

Jeez, this one in France is quite a job
