Hi guys!

(Before anyone crucify me) I have searched this forum and googled around for related posts and solutions, so I know this might have been discussed before - so please excuse the repost as I'm sneaking in this post from work in between my boss' coffee and bathroom breaks.

I've had an issue with my internet that started roughly 4-5 days ago. I have a 400G Billion router, one of those you get from telkom with your contract...

The problem I'm having is that it seems that I just cannot connect to the internet anymore. My line is synchronizing, so the 5 times my father and I called telkom, they could not really help us since technical support protocol basically ends with "your line is synchronizing on this side Sir".

Things we have tried ->

- Using different LAN cables.
- Replacing the filter.
- Resetting the router, changing settings and doing a factory restore.
- Using a dial-up connection and entering details into the router.
- Checked our passwords and account details and verified its validity with telkom.
- About everything we could possibly think of.
- Resetting the router another 9000 times.
- Yell at the router.
- Yell at eachother.
- Yell at the cat.

The router keeps saying "attempting to connect" and when you dial with an account, it spits out "attempting just about nothing".

It does however work at times, every 50 resets it works for 2 minutes but even then it half loads a website and then runs out of steam, the "internet" light on the router goes red, and we're back to square one.

Could this be a router issue? I can't get away from work to go wait in a 3 hour queue to have my router tested only to hear that it's not the issue.

Calling telkom doesn't work since they simply cant see issues on their end... though I have to add, they have been quite helpful. I was on the phone with one technician for almost an hour and he refused to stop until the problem was fixed - but alas...

Any suggestions, ideas or meanderings?

Not that one, but something down that line :P

A few weeks ago my i had the same problem, so i bought another router and things seemed to work better, but then I plugged in the old modem and found it worked again.
So i took my new modem to a friends house to let him use it, once we plugged it in, he couldn't get a pppoe connection working either, we drank alcohol and about 5 hours later is magically started working. Next day a different friend phones me telling me he can't connect to the internet, pppoe just doesnt seem to get going, a few hours later he's working again

Dont forget to check your lan ports on your pc. Those ports could be stuffed and may need to be replaced by adding a lan card.

It may have to do with the Verification of your account. It will synchronise but not connect. They should cancell and restart your Service and then check verification. Have you tested with onother router on same line and also tested your router on other line?

In other news... I took the router to Telkom to find that not only are their systems down, but we're on a month-to-month contract which means we can't exchange the router for a free new one. So we ordered a shiny new D-Link router yesterday afternoon. Since it takes a day or 3 to deliver the router to us from the online shop, I decided to dig into the router and try and fix the damn thing.

The side of the plug/powersupply of the router has two inlets, one that goes out to the wall plug and one that goes to the router - the point of this I'm still not sure of, but I decided to take it out of the equation and plug the internet cable into the router directly from the filter...

I selected "Multiple Session", keyed in my details and voila, it has been on since yesterday at 6, without a single intermission.

We paid R800 for a new router the same day I finally fix a week long problem by doing something completely unrelated.

Murphy's Law is a bitch and a half.
