The Tools and other D.I.Y bargains thread

Which brand of tools would you say is a good starting point for someone looking to buy some power tools for jobs around the house?
Buy once buy quality buy industrial avoid domestic avoid brands labelled as DIY or home use.
Not only are the latter likely to break on the first job you tackle, many are downright dangerous.
It used to be Bosch, B&D, now include MAKITA, and some Ryobi. Not aware of other new brands personally.
I have Bosch I industrial hand dril I bought in 1968, still in perfect working order.
I have my father's Bosch he bought somewhere around 1962 and there is nothing wrong with it either.

I very often snoop at cash converters and hospice looking for tools especially when I know the job is probably going to involve destroying the tools, and when the tools are going to be used by unskilled labour. Let them destroy a second hand tool rather than my own prized possessions.

I have a B&D 115mm angle grinder. a while back I broke the lock pin that enable you to lock the wheel and change the discs. I now it constantly running a grinder disc. I then went and bought myself a Makita 115mm grinder. Yes it was expensive. BUT this has opended my eyes to buying proper power tools. Buy once cry once.

Depends on what you plan to use it for.
Home use / DIY tools are perfectly suitable for hobby / infrequent use.

Been buying new power tools over the last couple of months. Decided on cordless for ease of use and quick jobs round the house. Trust me sometimes it can longer to get an extension cord out and plugged in than the actual job takes.

Decided to buy proper and buy once, one decent tool per month. Also decided to buy same brand so that batteries are interchangeable, use one and one on charge.

So far have the following:
  • Makita Impact + Driver Cordless Drill
  • Makita Angle Grinder
  • Makita SDS 18v drill
  • Makita Circular Saw
  • Makita Orbital Sander
  • Makita Blower for cleaning up
Next on the list is

Makita Multitool
Makita Router
Makita Jigsaw

All of them have brushes, don't use them enough to validate brushless and they all have easy access to brushes for replacement.

Then I should be sorted for the next 20 years. Price wise these guys have the best pricing for the above

If your into this type of stuff this guys channel is awesome -

Take a look at Addendorf's range also
This
Bought a saw from them. Still going strong

Think I'll get this. Extra battery always a plus.

Go with the addendorf one.. I bought that exact Ryobi and it refuses to charge now.. used it but a few times..

I keep forgetting to go back to the store. In Paarden Eiland (CPT) there’s a bolt and nut shop which also sells tools and other hardware. They have an 18v Stanley cordless drill for R16xx. Very good price for a good drill. It’s the brushless still as well. They normally go for over 2k. Will see if I can swing by there this afternoon to confirm shops name

Not really a fan of Ryobi but here is a good Makro lawnmower special for a small lawn for R699, it might be a printing error though.

And one not so special, 500ml Total SAE 40 oil for R299.

Looking for some Wera screwdrivers if anyone knows of any specials, those and some decent pliers, side cutters etc..

Looking for a Pentalobe P5 screwdriver if anyone knows where I can find one online in SA?

Am awaiting a quote for a kit from Christensen, and Communica are sold out online (may have a set in CT for R500 or so, but hoping to find the single driver for less).

Will probably only use it once or twice so quality isn't top priority.

That is the battery operated lawnmower that is part of the One+ range . Battery sold seperate at about R1100 for the 3000mah battery. Then you also need a charger at about R400
