No mention of Ian ? I have particular interest in this one.... Son and his wife is in Tallahassee (Just NW of 2 AM Fri), His inlaws is in New Port Richie (just about where the 2AM Thu is) ) and my other son is landing around 06:00 Friday morning in Atlanta on his way to Tally to go visit his boet :)

The track of a hurricane is very difficult to predict 4-5 days in advance, particularly when it is still intensifying. Plenty of people are following Ian, but the location of landfall, and likely effects are still uncertain.

With my son in Tallahassee since Dec 2016 I'm very well aware of the uncertainty of these things, having watched from this side of the Atlantic how Irma and then Michael unfolded :) Anyway, was talking about nobody not yet mentioned Ian in this thread

Apologies. I don't have the data connection yet to be able to do too many of these things at the moment. I really miss the fibre connection I had in PTA. and the LTE crap I have available in CT is just too terrible.

Nothing. They are all caused by the same weather phenomena - tropical cyclones.

The names are just there as a clue as to where the tropical cyclone originated.

Hurricanes - occur in the North Atlantic, central North Pacific and eastern North Pacific Oceans
Typhoons - occur in the Northwest Pacific Ocean
Tropical Cyclones - occur in the South Pacific and Indian Oceans
 
So , predictions show a very slight change in direction here, a bit more to east on landfall. (Also depends which predictions you're looking at) From this it looks like Tally is going to be fine, but going right over the in-laws house :( Predicted storm surge around Tampa bay is about 3m or so....

The latest forecasts are firmer, with a powerful hurricane making landfall later today (Wed 28th) over central Florida. Peak winds and storm-surge will be restricted to a relatively small section of coast, but flooding rains (250mm+) are likely over a wide swath of the interior and eastern coast:

Ja, that last shift to the east has it missing the in-laws, but still in line for around 10 inches of rain, accompanied by "some wind" :) Will see what the storm surge brings to that part of the west coast...

Anti-clockwise circulation (in the northern hemisphere) means that storm surge at landfall is stronger to the south of the central eye, and less to the north. Coastal topography also has a large effect.

Edit: A rare opposing phenomenon was recorded with water being pushed offshore ahead of the hurricane:

While the damage assessment in Florida continues, hurricane Ian has re-intensified over the Atlantic Ocean, and is set to make a rare 2nd landfall later today (Fri 30th) in South Carolina:
