Reports have suggested that the next-generation Toyota GR86 will be based on the Mazda MX-5. However, the two models are expected to differ significantly.
While the first and second generations of the Toyota 86 were co-developed with Subaru, Toyota is now rumoured to be shifting collaboration to Mazda for the next-generation model. According to Japanese publication Best Car, the new GR86 will be based on the MX-5, though differ significantly from the Mazda, with the GR86 rumoured to use a slightly extended version of the MX-5’s platform to accommodate rear seats.
Reports have further suggested the next-generation GR86 will employ a different powertrain than the MX-5, with the former expected to be powered by a Toyota 2.0-litre internal combustion engine (ICE) incorporating electric assistance. Notably, Mazda’s chief technical officer, Ryuichi Umeshita, told Road & Track in July that the MX-5 could employ a larger, 2.5-litre engine.
With a 3-inch lift, off-road tires, and an available turbo kit, the Kuhl Outroad GR86 could be the perfect all-terrain sports car for buyers on a budget.
Toyota GR86 handed the ‘safari’ treatment by Japanese tuner
Kuhl Racing has quite literally lifted the Toyota GR86 to new heights, handing the Japanese coupé upgraded suspension and several all-road-focused items.
Recently, Kuhl Racing unveiled a beefed-up Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Now, the Japanese tuner has applied its trade to the GR86, handing the two-door coupé a bespoke body kit and upgraded (and lifted) suspension, while offering the option of turbocharging the GR86’s original naturally aspirated powertrain.
The Kuhl Racing-tuned GR86’s, dubbed the “Kuhl Outroad GR86”, suspension gains a lift of around three inches, though specifying the optional hydraulic lift elevates ground clearance by an additional 1.6 inches. The body kit comprises redesigned fore and aft bumpers (for improved approach and departure angles). The car also gains skid plates, body cladding, auxiliary lights, and roof rails to complete the rugged, all-road-focused look. New wheels and all-terrain tyres are also included.
