Review: 2025 Toyota Hilux Legend 55
Verdict
A box which, in terms of its timing, was always going to be ticked, Toyota South Africa is likely regretting the decision to showcase a wide-bodied prototype at its SOMI event, thus building excitement around the prospect of an “ultimate eight-generation Hilux” that couldn’t ultimately be realised.
The Legend 55 instead assumes its place alongside its four previous anniversary models, providing a timely reminder, despite its relative age, of how rock-solid, impressively dependable, and, indeed, massively popular this soon-to-be-replaced generation of the legendary Hilux has proven.
That said, Toyota South Africa will be as keen as anyone to welcome the next Hilux to its Durban production line.

Verdict

Toyota launches new Hilux Legend 55 edition in South Africa: pricing and features
Every five years Toyota releases a new special edition Hilux to commemorate the market leading bakkie’s anniversary in South Africa. The new Legend 55 is the latest and greatest example of these.
The new edition, which is being launched to the media this week, is available in four versions, with the Xtra cab priced at R728,300 in 4x2 guise and R813,700 as a 4x4. The double cab equivalents are priced at R885,700 and R935,900 respectively, undercutting only the R999,000 GR-Sport in Toyota’s vast Hilux range.
The new Legend 55 is fitted with a number of value-added features, including a full widebody kit, which widens the vehicle by 45mm through special Wide Tread Suspension and fender extensions.
The edition also features a unique exterior design package, which includes black grille treatment, a silver bash plate and new 18-inch alloy wheels, while the styling bar boasts a unique design. Also included in the package is a roller shutter and tow bar.

Summary
It’s a tremendous credit to the Hilux that the Legend 55, as the ultimate version of a 10-year-old bakkie (this model was unveiled in 2015!), does not feel obsolete. Compared with a decade ago, before R1-million-plus bakkies became a reality, lifestyle-bakkie buyers now expect a glut of car-like features and near-passenger-vehicle-like performance, which is asking a lot. Toyota’s venerable Hilux, however, remain a consummate all-rounder with an enviable reputation for reliability, backed by the after-sales network of a 5-time (and current) Cars.co.za Awards Brand of the Year. It’s a rock-solid proposition.
Certainly, when compared with those of its rivals, the cabin of the Hilux shows its age. There’s nothing wrong with it – it’s all functional, but look inside a GWM P300, Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok, or BYD Shark – those bakkies’ interiors are fresher and better-equipped. In 2025, a single USB port and no wireless charging pad are disappointing! Here’s hoping that the next iteration of the Hilux will offer more digital connectivity (it should, to be fair), while retaining all the capability and durability of its forebears.

Launch Drive: Toyota Hilux Legend 55 is a fitting swansong to the current generation
What’s it like to drive the Legend 55?
With a launch route taking us on a 700km route from Qgeberha to George via Graaf Reniet, Oudshoorn and the Outenique pass, we certainly got well acquainted with the Hilux Legend 55.
All versions are powered by the familiar 2.8-litre DG-6 turbodiesel engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Through a variety of conditions, including mountain passes, the engine provided decent performance and enough oomph to overtake, within reason. Consumption was a little on the high side at a shade over 11 litres per 100km, although in fairness we were hardly driving economy-run-style.
The Hilux’s ride quality is perhaps not as plush as that of the Ranger, but it is certainly acceptably comfortable by bakkie standards, as are overall levels of noise insulation. My driving partner and I did not feel too fatigued after our long driving stretches, and the only slight discomfort for me was the tight upper bolsters of the sports seats, which pinched my back a bit.
While not the most modern of bakkies, the Hilux remains a solid and dependable winning formula for Toyota South Africa, and the new Legend 55 Edition adds some extra spice to the current generation as it drives into the sunset.

New Toyota Hilux confirmed for South Africa in 2026: Here's what we know so far
The current-generation Toyota Hilux has certainly stood the test of time. After nine years on the market, it is showing its age, yet it continues to dominate the local sales charts by a healthy margin.
But when will South Africans see a new Hilux?
Toyota South Africa representatives recently confirmed to local media that the next-generation Hilux will be launched locally during 2026, although its introduction could take place later, rather than earlier, in the year.
As with the current model, the new version will be built locally at the firm’s Prospecton plant near Durban, although export plans have yet to be announced. It is widely anticipated that the new Toyota Hilux will make its world debut at the Japan Mobility Show in late October.
However, current evidence suggests that the 2026 Hilux might not be a completely new model. While earlier speculation pointed to it being based around the new TNGA-F architecture, which also underpins the American Tacoma bakkie and new Prado, spy pictures and brochure leaks suggest it uses a heavily updated version of the current architecture.
The door shells, seen in these leaked images, strongly resemble those on the current Hilux, although the front and rear ends have been completely redesigned, to the point where it will appear all-new from most angles.
