Hilux vs Ranger - which bakkie has the best resale value?

In bakkie-mad South Africa, it’s no surprise that the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux wage a war at the top of the sales charts, with the latter having enjoyed an advantage in recent times.

Comparing the two is tricky business. They split our votes when we compared them back in 2016 - read our review here - and braai-side conversations can no doubt end up getting pretty heated when these bakkies’ attributes are compared - meaning it's not just religion and politics that one should avoid discussing around a fire.

But which one commands the highest prices when it comes to reselling?

According to True Price, the Hilux has the resale value edge, at least when it comes to auctions.

The company drew data from thousands of auction sales captured on its system, which it uses to provide free vehicle evaluations to South African motorists.

According to True Price managing director Darryl Jacobson, the company analysed 2015 and 2016 Hilux and Ranger models in three mileage categories.

In the 0-100 000km category the Hilux retained 73 percent of its original value while the Ranger averaged 69 percent.

The 100 000 to 200 000km bracket saw the Hilux retain 62 percent of its value, versus 56 percent in the Ranger's case.

The 200 000km+ category saw a 58 percent return versus 53 percent.

Although the exact reasons for these differences can never be completely pinned down, and bearing in mind that they apply to auction prices, Jacobson attributes the Hilux’s superior resale prices to Toyota’s reputation for reliability and aftersales service as well as its extensive dealer network.

As mentioned, both locally built bakkies compete at the top of South Africa’s sales charts, the Hilux attracting 36 422 sales last year and the Ranger 32 811.

While the Hilux was recently handed a minor upgrade and range realignment, Ford’s Ranger is due for a refresh next year, when the highly-anticipated Raptor will hit the scene too.

Toyota and Arctic Trucks build special ‘Hilux Invincible 50’

To celebrate 50 years of the Hilux nameplate, Toyota has teamed up with Arctic Trucks to create this special-edition Hilux Invincible 50. Fittingly, just 50 units will be produced, all offered exclusively to buyers in the United Kingdom.

Engineered in partnership with the Iceland-based Arctic Trucks company, the special model features a Bilstein suspension kit as well as model-specific 16×7,5 ET05 alloys, finished in satin black with a machined lip and wrapped in 265/75 R16 BF Goodrich KO2 all-terrain tyres.

The suspension kit raises the vehicle by 40 mm at the front and 20 mm at the rear, adding articulation and increasing approach and departure angles.

Interestingly, the Invincible 50 model wears the old Hilux face. Fresh styling features, though, include bespoke, wider front and rear fenders, a double-hoop sports bar and four high-power “Vision X” lights. Other interesting details include Arctic Trucks mudflaps at the rear, a “Line-X” bed liner, rear parking sensors and a classic “Toyota” tailgate graphic.

Inside, you’ll find a numbered “Invincible 50” plaque, with yet more chrome badging and detailing on the fenders, wheels, doors, tailgate, sports bar, lighting and interior.

Under the bonnet, though, nothing has changed. The special-edition double-cab bakkie is powered by the Japanese brand’s familiar 110 kW/400 N.m 2,4-litre turbodiesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The UK price has yet to be announced … and Toyota South Africa Motors has yet to reveal whether it has any plans for its own special-edition version of the Hilux (Legend 50, anyone?)…

South Africa’s 10 best-selling bakkies of October 2018

The sales figures for October 2018 are in … and some 777 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues. But that battle has become somewhat one-sided…

According to Naamsa, October’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 51 866 units, representing an increase of 1,7%, year on year. The light commercial segment, meanwhile, improved by 5,9% to 14 168 units for the month.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in October 2018? Well, the refreshed Toyota Hilux stayed at the top, with the Ford Ranger again having to settle for second place. By our maths, that puts the Hilux a whopping 8 172 units ahead of the Ranger in the year-to-date race, with a mere two months remaining.

In October, the Nissan NP200 held steady in third spot, with the Isuzu KB – which has just switched over to the D-Max badge – remaining in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 636 units of the KB and 123 units of the D-Max). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody (we’re now combining these figures) again rounded out the top half of the table, keeping its fifth-place ranking.

The Volkswagen Amarok likewise remained in sixth, with the Mahindra Pik-Up again occupying seventh. The GWM Steed, meanwhile, climbed two places to eighth, forcing the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up down one to nine and the Nissan Navara down one to tenth.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (47), Mitsubishi Triton (31), Fiat Fullback (17) or Mazda BT-50 (10) in October. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.

Toyota Hilux GR Sport unveiled: bakkie gets Gazoo treatment!

Toyota has taken the wraps off its new Hilux GR Sport model at the São Paulo International Motor Show, slapping the “Gazoo Racing” name on the popular double-cab bakkie.

This, says the brand, is the first Toyota to wear the GR Sport moniker in Latin America, and was developed with “direct support” from the Japanese firm’s Gazoo Racing arm. Just 420 units will be produced.

Built at the automaker’s Zárate plant in Buenos Aires, the limited-edition Hilux GR Sport adds “sporty” styling and a “specially configured” suspension system for fast gravel tracks. The engine – in this case the brand’s familiar 2,8-litre turbodiesel linked to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission – is unchanged.

The suspension updates include hardened front springs and the addition of double-tube dampers. The latter work together with the “specifically selected” valves to result in a “tailored damping curve to enhance driver control” and “increase confidence” during high-speed driving on gravel roads.

Exterior styling cues include extensive use of Gazoo Racing’s signature white, black and red hues (main paint colours, meanwhile, include Pearly White, Black Mica and Metallic Red), plus the addition of “Toyota” lettering on the grille, a black bar styling bar and bold runner boards. The Hilux GR Sport runs on 17-inch alloys wrapped in 265/65 all-terrain rubber.

Inside, you’ll find perforated leather with red stitching, as well as various Gazoo Racing details, including a start button, GR-brand floor mats, a numbered interior plate and the GR logo on the front headrests.

A Gazoo Racing Toyota Hilux has been revealed at the São Paulo Motor Show for the Brazilian market and we like it…

This is the Toyota Hilux GR Sport which has been shown at the São Paulo Motor Show in Brazil and it has been specifically designed for off-road use. It’s powered by the same 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine with 130 kW and 450 Nm of torque and comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission driving all-four wheels.

In terms of design, the model gains a unique grille with Toyota lettering replacing the Toyota badge on the nose. The bonnet has been blacked out for contrast and the model is fitted with flaring wheel arches housing 17-inch aluminium wheels, tube side steps and a sports bar. The vehicle is finished off with sporty Gazoo Racing graphics.

On the inside, the driver is welcomed with black leather upholstery with red contrasting stitching and GR logos seen on the headrests. The instrument cluster has been redesigned and a GR start/stop button is included. Each model gets special GR branded floor mats as well as a numbered badge on the centre console.

Technical upgrades include a retuned suspension with stiffer front springs and new dampers. The steering has also been revised to offer a more “linear and progressive response” according to Toyota.

Sadly, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport will not be offered in South Africa and only 420 will be available to customers in Brazil.

However, after recently experiencing the Yaris GRMN on local soil, we look forward to more performance Gazoo Racing road cars becoming more widely available in the future. We are holding thumbs…

The sales figures for November 2018 are in … and some 729 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues. But, as we’ve pointed out over the past few months, that battle is now somewhat one-sided…

According to Naamsa, November’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 47 486 units, representing a decrease of 4,6 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment, meanwhile, fell by 6,1 percent to 13 695 units for the month.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in November 2018? Well, the refreshed Toyota Hilux remained on top, with the Ford Ranger again having to settle for second place. By our maths, that puts the Hilux a massive 8 901 units ahead of the Ranger in the year-to-date race, with just a single month remaining in 2018.

In November, the Nissan NP200 held steady in third spot, with the Isuzu D-Max – which has switched from the KB badge – remaining in fourth (its final figure comprised 815 units of the KB and 603 units of the D-Max). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody again rounded out the top half of the table, easily keeping its fifth-place ranking despite attracting criticism for its recent Global NCAP crash-test result.

The Volkswagen Amarok likewise remained in sixth, with the GWM Steed climbing one to seventh and the Mahindra Pik-Up falling one to eighth. The Nissan Navara, meanwhile, climbed one to ninth, forcing the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up down to the final spot on the table.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (61), Mitsubishi Triton (39), Mazda BT-50 (21) or Fiat Fullback (13) in November. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.

Toyota reveals Japan-only TRD Hilux Black Rally edition

The Hilux has been getting its fair share of in-house body kits as seen with the pre-facelift TRD kit and rather recently revealed GR Sport kit but with the Tokyo Auto Salon being just around the corner, Toyota has decided to unveil its TRD Hilux Black Rally edition kit which is essentially an update to the previously mentioned TRD kit. The catch? It’ll only be available to the JDM.

The Hliux Black Rally edition features a collection of body parts to give it a more aggressive personality. This consists of plastic flared fenders, a new bumper with redesigned spotlamp inserts and an anti-scuffing plate (as seen in the previous edition). Based on the images, there are different grille designs that can be opted for.

Over at the rear there’s a more sporty exhaust tailpiece and a TRD-branded sports-bar. Additionally there’s a new set of rocker panels, mudflaps an alloy wheels. TRD branding has also been used on the rear quarter panel. A sticker arrangement with the words “Racing Development TRD” adds a finishing touch to the doors.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the final month of 2018? Well, the Toyota Hilux remained on top, with the Ford Ranger again having to settle for second place. By our maths, that leaves the Hilux a full 9 877 units ahead of the Ranger over the course of the year.

In December, the Nissan NP200 held steady in third spot, with the Isuzu D-Max – which has switched from the KB badge – remaining in fourth (its final figure comprised 593 units of the D-Max and 420 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody again rounded out the top half of the table, retaining fifth place.

The Volkswagen Amarok likewise held steady in sixth, while the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up climbed three places to seventh. The Mahindra Pik-Up remained in eighth and the Nissan Navara in ninth, while the GWM Steed was forced down three places to the final spot on the table.

Nasser Al-Attiyah wins Dakar 2019 in SA-built Toyota Hilux!

Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Nasser Al-Attiyah completed the final stage of Dakar 2019 to win the race in a South African-built Toyota Hilux. Nani Roma in a Mini and Sebastian Loeb in a Peugeot took second and third, respectively.

The Qatari driver and French navigator Mathieu Baumel gave Toyota its first win at Dakar, with the Hilux also becoming the first petrol-powered vehicle to win the race in the South-American era.

Teammate Giniel de Villiers (who eventually finished ninth overall) waited nearly 55 minutes for the leaders to start the tenth stage, in order to shadow him to the finish.

“We are so happy to win the Dakar – not only for ourselves, but also for Toyota and the entire Toyota Gazoo Racing SA team. Everyone has worked so hard for so long, and really deserve this. Thank you for letting us drive this car,” said Al-Attiyah.

Team Principal Glyn Hall said the victory was “long overdue”.

“When we first heard that the rally was going to take place only in one country, we were sceptical. But the organisers made sure that this year’s race will long be remembered as one of the toughest tests in the last decade,” he said.

De Villiers, of course, hit a rock on the third stage, relegating him to a supporting role.

“Obviously we came here to try to win the race. But once that dream ended, we were happy to support Nasser and Mathieu’s effort. If we couldn’t win it ourselves, the next best thing was for one of our teammates to take the victory, and I am overjoyed at the final result,” said the South African.

“The organisers ran the final stage in reverse order, and the team decided that Dirk and I needed to wait for Nasser and Mathieu. So, we started the stage, but then pulled over and waited in the dunes,” explained De Villiers.

“Luckily our crew had packed two deck chairs for us, so we could watch a bit of racing in comfort.”

New Toyota Hilux GR derivative confirmed for South Africa!

CARmag.co.za has reliably learnt that Toyota South Africa Motors has plans to launch some sort of GR derivative of its popular Hilux bakkie.

While details are still (very) scarce, it seems likely the upgraded bakkie will be positioned to take on the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak.

If that indeed turns out to be the case, expect the GR-badged Hilux to gain various styling updates, such as a tweaked front-end design, new alloy wheels, some added black trim and perhaps even fender flares and a styling bar. Extras like a load-bed liner and tonneau cover could also be on the cards, while the cabin should gain a smattering of GR logos at the very least.

So, any power upgrades? Well, while we simply don’t know yet, it seems unlikely. You see, in Japan the firm uses a three-tier system for its sporty products, with GRMN models sitting at the summit, GR vehicles in the mid-range and entry-level GR Sport offerings at the bottom.

Models in the mid-level GR portfolio (which appears to be where this new Hilux variant will fall) generally benefit from upgraded suspension and braking systems, plus fresh exterior and interior styling. Powertrains are left unchanged at this level (with only the full-fat GRMN models gaining extra under-bonnet oomph).

In November 2018, Toyota whipped the covers off a new Hilux GR Sport double-cab model at the São Paulo International Motor Show. In addition to the altered styling, the limited-edition model featured a “specially configured” suspension system designed for fast gravel tracks.

Needless to say, we’ll keep our eyes peeled and ears open for any fresh details on the upcoming SA-spec Hilux GR…

The sales figures for January 2019 are in … and exactly 600 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie starts all over again.

According to Naamsa, January’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 42 374 units, representing a decrease of 7,4 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (11 681 units), meanwhile, remained steady compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the first month of 2019? Well, the Toyota Hilux – which was the best-selling bakkie range in SA in 2018, a whopping 9 877 units ahead of its nearest rival – started the year on top, with the Ford Ranger again taking second place.

The Nissan NP200, meanwhile, held steady in third spot, with the Isuzu D-Max – which has switched from the KB badge – remaining in fourth (its final figure comprised 821 units of the D-Max and 271 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody again rounded out the top half of the table, retaining fifth place.

The Mahindra Pik-Up climbed two places to sixth, while the Volkswagen Amarok fell one to seventh. The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up dropped a place to eighth, while the GWM Steed climbed one to ninth. The Nissan Navara grabbed the final spot on the table.

Toyota Hilux Legend 50 for SA

The ever-popular Toyota Hilux celebrates its 50th anniversary in South Africa this year and true to tradition, buyers can look forward to the arrival of the Hilux Legend 50 towards the middle of the year.

The Hilux is a household name in South Africa and it’s not surprising when you look at the market dominance the Hilux has fostered over the years and the Hilux has been the best-selling vehicle in South Africa for countless consecutive months. Its lineage spans 8 generations since its local introduction in 1969 (production began in 1968), the Hilux is still praised for its reliability, robust offroad ability and excellent value retention in the used car market. Today, the Hilux is built at Toyota's Prospecton plant in Durban for the local market as well as for export.

The Hilux also excelled on the international stage earlier this year with the South African-built Gazoo Racing Hilux, driven by Al Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel, securing Toyota’s first Dakar win in gruelling conditions. Days later, Toyota scooped the coveted Brand of the Year title at the #CarsAwards powered by WesBank.

The 50th anniversary of the Hilux in South Africa is a major milestone and Toyota will celebrate the occasion by introducing a special edition Hilux Legend 50 model. A local Toyota spokesperson has confirmed that the Hilux Legend 50 will come to market in June 2019 and while exact design and specification details are unknown at this stage, buyers can expect a wide range of additional kit as standard as well model-specific design details that will differentiate the Hilux Legend 50 from the rest of the Hilux range. The Hilux Legend 50 is definately one to look out for if you are a Hilux fan.

It’s official! Toyota Hilux GR-Sport confirmed for South Africa

At the end of January 2019, CARmag.co.za broke the news that Toyota South Africa Motors had plans to launch some sort of GR derivative of its popular Hilux bakkie. And now the local arm of the Japanese automaker has confirmed a limited number of Hilux GR-Sport units will be offered locally.

The Hilux GR-Sport derivative is set to hit the local market in June 2019, with just 535 units set aside for South Africa.

From what we can tell, it will be similar to the double-cab model unveiled at the São Paulo International Motor at the end of 2018.

Toyota SA Confirms Hilux GR Sport

Toyota South Africa has confirmed that the Hilux GR Sport will be coming to SA around the middle of the year. Here's what we know so far.

Toyota's bread-and-butter Hilux is to be bolstered by the addition of a sportier derivative. Called the Hilux GR Sport, it features numerous upgrades, both inside and out. The limited edition Toyota Hilux GR Sport boasts Gazoo Racing stickers, new look grille, 2-tone paint finish and GR Sport 17-inch alloys with 265/65 all-terrain tyres.

However, there need to be some upgrades to the performance for the go to match the show. While the 2.8 GD-6 4x4 automatic powertrain is unchanged, there has been some work done to the suspension which Toyota claims will give the Hilux GR Sport greater off-the-beaten-track prowess. There'll be just 535 units allocated to South African customers, so you're going to have to move fast if you want one. We'll bring you pricing and further details closer to the launch in the middle of the year.
