Government-backed project takes shape to create an alternative zero-emission vehicle for remote UK areas
Toyota has taken a major step in the development of hydrogen propulsion with the unveiling of a prototype Toyota Hilux fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).
Although the company’s first FCEV was a car (the Toyota Mirai, on sale since 2014 and now into its second generation), commercial vehicles’ need for quicker refuelling and longer range than batteries can presently provide makes them a better fit for the technology.
Toyota’s FCEV pick-up truck has a simulated range of 365 miles and a refuelling time similar to that of a diesel. The project – which was funded, developed and delivered in the UK at Toyota’s Burnaston plant – was given the go-ahead in just 12 months.

Long-term intro: Toyota Hilux Raider X marks the sweet spot in the range
Bakkie sales continue to lead the charts in South Africa and out in front is the venerable Toyota Hilux. Whether it’s a single cab workhorse or the GR-Sport, we love them.
I mean, they even have whole websites and social media groups dedicated to them that inform, advise and keep owners up to date with all manner of assistance.
Toyota knows they have a winner, even if a new generation version is only likely in 2025, so they keep them relevant with tweaks, decals and limited editions and as they release them they move off the showroom floor quicker than they can come out of their Prospecton plant in Durban.
One such version is the Hilux Raider X, which we’ll be spending time with for the next three months.
The Raider X in my opinion hits the sweet spot in the range without skimping on quality, technology, safety or drivability.
Priced at R704 300 our Graphite Grey double cab 4x4 six-speed automatic Raider (there’s also a six-speed manual at R674 800) provides decent value for money.

Ford Ranger beating Toyota Hilux in 2023 South African double cab bakkie sales race
When it comes to South African bakkie sales, it’s a well known fact that the Toyota Hilux enjoys a healthy lead over all of its rivals.
In the past three months, for instance, the Hilux sold an average of 3,207 units per month, followed by the Ford Ranger at 2,290 and Isuzu D-Max, which managed 1,604.
These figures, of course, are a combination of double cab, single cab and cab-and-a-half body configurations, and you might be surprised to learn that Toyota doesn’t lead in all three segments.
During the recent Ford Ranger Wildtrak X launch (read our review here), the carmaker gave us some insight into double cab sales in South Africa, and the Blue Oval is currently leading that race, according to the latest available year-to-date figures up to the end of August 2023.
During its presentation, Ford revealed that it sold 13,892 double cab Ranger models between January and August, which equates to a monthly average of 1,737 units per month.

Toyota Hilux GR Sport gets a refresh in Europe, will we see something similar in SA?
Toyota has unleashed a new version of the Hilux GR Sport for the European market, sporting numerous design and technical enhancements.
At this stage it’s not known whether any of these changes will be implemented on the South African Hilux GR-S, which was introduced with numerous revisions in late 2022, but it’s likely that we could see something similar to this in 2024 given that this new GR-S will only hit EU showrooms from the second half of next year.
Like the current GR-S the version “II”, as it’s called, boasts a unique monotube suspension set-up, but it also gains 20mm in ride height versus the standard Hilux, increasing the approach angle from 29 degrees to 30 degrees.
To further improve road holding, the track width has been increased by 140mm at the front and 155mm at the back, while the lighter 17-inch alloy wheels are shod with all-terrain tyres.
The braking system is beefed up too with larger 17-inch front discs, while the rear end swaps its drums for 15-inch discs, a Hilux first.

Toyota SA’s new sub-Hilux bakkie in the making? IMV 0 concept shows its versatility
Earlier this year Toyota South Africa Motors revealed that it was looking at introducing a new bakkie that’s more affordable than the Hilux.
Stringing the evidence together it seems likely to us that the vehicle in question will be based on a production version of the Toyota IMV 0 concept from Thailand.
Why do we say that? For starters TSA’s vice president of marketing and communications, Glen Crompton, said it would be a solution for Africa and emerging markets, and one that’s “in the same space but more affordable than the Hilux.”
The IMV 0 concept has been revealed in dribs and drabs since December 2022, with the company keen to showcase its versatility by showing numerous variations and body styles.
The latest batch of concept vehicles were unveiled this week ahead of the Tokyo Mobility Show.
