The Toyota Prius Thread

The 2023 Toyota Prius is a Hot Hybrid for a Changing World

The new Prius brings better performance, better gas mileage and better looks to the table for 2023.

Why the 2023 Toyota Prius Looks So Good

Jalopnik spoke with chief engineer Satoki Oya to learn more about what went into the design of the fifth-generation Prius, a knockout among hybrids.

When the 2023 Toyota Prius was first unveiled, pretty much the entire universe was taken aback by its all-new, and honestly striking, styling. The whole design really works well to create a cohesive, futuristic look for a car that has never really been known as a style icon. Toyota says this departure from the Prius’s past is the company’s way of making the hybrid more appealing to younger buyers. I sat down with Satoki Oya, chief engineer on the new fifth-generation Prius, to learn more.

“We wanted to make a good looking car that drove and performed well, and so when design first brought me the initial sketch, I thought it was really good,” Oya told me through a translator. “So, the whole development team said, ‘we want to build this.’ What you see is actually the end result of that.”

Woah, we bet you’ve never seen a Toyota Prius like this before

Japanese tuner T-Demand slams the new-gen Prius. There’s a sentence we never thought we’d say

We’ve seen a few modified Toyota Priuses over the hybrid hero’s 25-year lifespan, but none have ever looked quite like this. This is Japanese tuner T-Demand’s take on the brand-new fifth-gen Prius, a car that (surprisingly) starts life as a very good-looking thing.

T-Demand has fitted ‘AIRSUS’ air suspension and slammed the Prius as low as it’ll go. It's then fitted new brakes and massive aftermarket alloy wheels with some serious negative camber.

There’s no word on any performance upgrades, but we like to imagine that the standard 2.0-litre four-pot has been swapped out for a hybridised 2JZ because why the hell not.

Toyota hints at hot GR Prius unveiling at Le Mans

Gazoo Racing hints that uprated hybrid hatchback will make debut at 24 Hour race next weekend

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance division has hinted that it will reveal a high-performance model based on the Prius at the centenary running of the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

Gazoo has said it will unveil a concept “equipped with vehicle technologies that have been developed through numerous challenges in motorsports participation” at the event.

A teaser image published alongside the statement implies the model being based on the new Toyota Prius, as it features a similarly contoured front bumper with the same sensor placements.

It's differentiated from the standard hybrid hatchback by two groups of four LED foglights, the addition of canards along each flank and an aggressive front splitter.
