"Prime mover. Prime cut. Prime minister. Prime attraction. And for Trekkers, there's the Prime Directive. "Prime" means best or top, and so it was a natural to use it for the most technologically advanced, best-equipped Toyota Prius in the model's nearly two-decade global history. The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime represents the pinnacle of efficiency and technology for the new- generation Prius, with a new dual-motor hybrid powertrain with a remarkable 2017 EPA-estimated 133 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent), the highest rating in the industry among all vehicles.

That also represents a substantial 26-percent enhancement over its predecessor model, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, the result of greater battery capacity and an improved hybrid system. In hybrid mode, the Prius Prime stands out again, exceeding all competitors' fuel economy ratings with EPA-estimated 55 city/53 highway/54 combined MPG.

The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime combines an electrifying design with an even more capable electric powertrain than the previous-generation model. In fact, the Prius Prime will have class-leading total drive range with a EPA-estimated 640 miles! And, Prius Prime will offer a EPA-estimated range of up to 25 miles up to 84 mph in EV mode, with the goal in mind of meeting the daily commuter distance of over half of U.S. drivers. As thrifty with fuel as the Prius Prime may be, in EV mode it drives with unexpected verve and excitement. Exclusive suspension tuning gives the Prime an enhanced planted stance through curves.

All Prius models are built around Toyota's New Global Architecture (TNGA) and feature double-wishbone independent rear suspension. You'll find that kind of suspension on the best sport sedans, and it can work the same wonders for handling and ride quality in a super-efficient hybrid, too. The trailing-arm design allows increased luggage space, in this case an outstanding EPA-estimated 19.8 cu. ft. with the rear seatbacks in use."

Toyota recalls latest Prius for 'faulty brakes': SA affected

Tokyo - Toyota is recalling 340 000 hybrid Prius cars around the world, 212 000 of them in Japan and 94 000 in North America, for a defect in their parking brakes.

Toyota said Wednesday (October 12) it has received reports of crashes, injuries and deaths. The Japanese automaker refused to provide details, saying it was still looking into the reports.

Possible crashes

Toyota said the parking brake cable can disengage, causing the brakes to stop working properly. So if the car is left in any gear other than park, it could start rolling away, and possibly crash.

Toyota South Africa says 58 local units have been identified.

The automaker says: "The campaign on Prius has been introduced to replace a clip on the parking brake assembly, which if disengaged would leave the parking brake inoperative. The operation only affects the parking brake and normal vehicle braking functions are unaffected.
Toyota SA says owners will be contacted by a Toyota representative to have the corrective action implemented by their local dealer free of charge.

Owners can contact the Toyota Customer Care Centre on 0800 139 111 to check whether their vehicle is affected.
Toyota said 17 000 Prius vehicles were recalled in Europe, and the rest in Australia and other regions. The problem models were manufactured from August 2015 through October 2016.

The company said all the vehicles were manufactured in Japan.

Toyota’s global Prius recall for brakes includes SA

Toyota Prius
The latest-generation Toyota Prius has been recalled for a parking brake issue.

Toyota has launched a global recall campaign for the latest-generation Prius due to a potential problem with the parking brake, and South African models are affected.

According to reports, some 340 000 units of the fourth-generation hybrid are set to be recalled around the world, with 58 of those examples found in South Africa. The affected units were built in Japan between August 2015 and October 2016.

The issue involves a potential flaw with the parking brake cable, which could see the vehicle could roll away if the transmission isn’t put into park. Affected vehicles will have clips installed on top of the brake cable dust boots to ensure they function correctly.

“The operation only affects the parking brake and normal vehicle braking functions are unaffected,” the local arm of the Japanese automaker told us, emphasising that the issue applied only to the new-generation Prius.

Toyota South Africa Motors adds that “owners will be contacted by a Toyota representative to have the corrective action implemented by their local dealer, free of charge”. Of course, we have a Prius in our long-term fleet, so we’ll go through the process ourselves.

If you like to find out whether your Prius is affected, you can contact the Toyota Customer Care Centre on 0800 139 111.

The new Prius was launched locally in June this year.

One of the most affordable hybrid vehicles on the market just added another compelling reason to buy for 2017. The Toyota Prius c, the smallest of the brand's eight hybrid models, now comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C) driver-assist technologies on all model grades. The TSS-C system, which had been an option on two Prius c grades for 2016, includes Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Assist, and Automatic High Beams.

That's big news, of course. But then, the compact Prius c has been a newsmaker since it joined the Toyota line. A redesigned front fascia, rear bumper, side rocker panels and blacked-out rear spoiler give the 2017 Prius c a big infusion of sporty attitude. All grades now also roll on standard alloy wheels.

A Big Safety Announcement from Toyota

Toyota Safety Sense-C is designed to help address three key areas of driver assistance: preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, helping maintain driving within their lane, and enhancing road safety during nighttime driving. Toyota plans to make automatic emergency braking standard on nearly all models by the end of 2017. That will put Toyota (and Lexus) four years ahead of the model-year 2022 industry target announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Urban? Suburban? Yes.

One doesn't need to live in a congested urban area to get why the "c" in Toyota Prius c stands for "city." Yet, even out in the 'burbs, one can appreciate the vehicle's 158.7-inch length, which makes it a shoe-in for those "compact only" parking spaces located so conveniently near mall entrances.

Toyota surpass 10 million Hybrid sales

Toyota has announced that its cumulative global hybrid vehicle (HV) sales has surpassed the 10-million-unit mark.

Toyota launched the Coaster Hybrid EV in August 1997, as well as the Prius - the world's first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle. This latest milestone of 10 million units was achieved just nine months after total sales reached nine million units at the end of April 2016.

Prius leads the way

The first generation Prius represented Toyota's response to the resource and environment-related issues of the twenty-first century.

Toyota launched its first hybrid vehicle 20 years ago, and the circumstances surrounding environmentally friendly vehicles have since changed dramatically. The growing popularity of the Prius led to the creation of a new customer standard of choosing cars based on their environmental performance.

As the number of companies developing and launching hybrid vehicles increased, so a new segment of "hybrid vehicles" was established.

In addition, now that customers around the world are opting to purchase hybrid vehicles and other fuel-efficient vehicles, the entire automobile industry has been able to contribute to the solution of global environmental problems.

Takeshi Uchivamada, chairman of the board of directors at Toyota said: "When we launched Prius, no one even knew what a hybrid was. Those who drove it were called geeks or other names. Today, thanks to those early adopters who gave Prius a chance, hybrids have grown in popularity, and have ridden a wave of success out of the unknown and into the mainstream.

Electrified Toyota sales surge by 30% in first half of 2017

22,616 hybrid models were sold between January and June; biggest growth came with fleet buyers

Toyota says sales of its hybrid model rose by 30.6% in the first six months of 2017, with four in ten customers now going for an electrified model.

The brand sold 22,616 hybrids between January and June. The biggest growth in demand came from fleet buyers, where hybrid sales shot up by 43.2%.

Toyota’s most popular hybrid model in Britain, the Prius, is also the world’s best-selling electrified car. Toyota offers hybrid versions of its Yaris, Auris and Rav4, as well as the C-HR.

“We’re seeing growth in sales at huge levels and that’s because customers recognise the benefits of hybrid in fuel efficiency, in environmental impact and in the smooth, quiet drive hybrid gives,” said Mark Roden, Toyota GB’s sales director.

Toyota's sales increase back the results of Autocar's recent survey, which indicated sales of battery-powered videos were set to rise due to concerns over the impact of diesel engines.

Toyota’s hybrid growth is mirrored across the industry, with sales for alternatively fuelled cars (the class hybrids fall into) reaching record highs earlier this year. Several brands have responded to this as well as increasingly stringent emissions limits, with Volvo the most recent to pledge to electrify its range.

However, some experts warn that recent changes to the UK's tax system, which reduced incentives to buy low-emission models, could hinder future growth.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said the segment needed "a consistent approach to incentives – fiscal and otherwise – and, most importantly, greater investment in the charging network is essential if we are to grow this emerging market".

SA’s 11 Worst-Selling Cars (Under R500k) Of Oct 2017

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales.

Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger cars of October 2017, as well as listed the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period.

But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores. Thankfully, Hyundai and Kia have started reporting their individual model sales figures, which certainly helps to paint a more accurate monthly picture. But, of course, some other automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW) still disclose only aggregate sales statistics.

Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicle ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.

We also don’t count sales from run-out stock of vehicles that have been discontinued locally, such as the Volkswagen Scirocco (4), Chevrolet Cruze (3), Mitsubishi Mirage (1) and Ford Fusion (1).

So, what happened during the month of October?

Well, just three units of each of the Mahindra Xylo and Toyota 86 were registered. The Abarth 500 range (4), Tata Manza (4), Alfa Romeo Giulietta (5), Tata Vista (5) and Volvo S60 (5) were next, while the Mazda MX-5 had to settle for six registrations. Suzuki’s Grand Vitara (7), the Volkswagen Beetle (7) and the Toyota Prius (9) rounded out the table.

For reference, see September’s list here.

SA’s 11 worst-selling passenger cars (under R500k) of October 2017:

Mahindra Xylo – 3
Toyota 86 – 3
Abarth 500 – 4
Tata Manza – 4
Alfa Romeo Giulietta – 5
Tata Vista – 5
Volvo S60 – 5
Mazda MX-5 – 6
Suzuki Grand Vitara – 7
Volkswagen Beetle – 7
Toyota Prius – 9
