A few years (post-apartheid) ago a representative of the University of the Free State came to my High school to recruit some new students to enrol at their university. He presented all the courses on offer, the vibrant student life and just when I thought everything was perfectly normal, he dropped a bombshell which left my entire matric class speechless: "At UFS we put you in a Culturally Specified Residence. We put you where you will feel comfortable amongst your people..." he continued to explain how at UFS they divide you up into a res depending on your skin colour... we sat speechless on the verge of both bursting into laughter or protesting in disgust.

Needless to say UFS was immediately removed as an option for tertiary studies for me. I also understood as a South African that the Freestate is not the most 'free-thinking' areas in the world... but kept my prejudices aside.

It is only now this past week when I feel that I was justified in my prejudice against UFS. I assumed that race was an issue... and now clearly the world knows it is an issue.

The re-integration of those racially segregated residences is the spark behind the current war being waged at UFS. They had a bad policy to start with and the University is fully to be blamed for the consequences. They created a little Apartheid in their backyards and now they have to deal with the consequences.

The video which has now been the driving force behind much debate and hype on the issue is a expression of the type of racial bigotry which exists in UFS. It is not just a video that is thus the problem... it is a state of mind which has been bread in that part of the world.

I recently spoke to a very close friend of mine who has a girlfriend at UFS and he told me after having visited her there what the atmosphere is like there (this being before the whole reintegration and video saga). According to him (white male - for clarity sake) he says that he has never been in such a repressive environment where people are clearly split up into racial groups. "The Blacks here, and the Whites there" he said, the atmosphere is stiff and whites would carelessly use the 'K' word to describe someone which is black.

UFS has major issues, and I blame the University for allowing and creating the current racial war being waged. It was inevitable.

<and yes I know you can tell me about reverse scenarios about blacks discriminating against whites, but that is not the issue. The issue is the climate that UFS has created and allowed, this considering that they are a tertiary educational institute.>

Perhaps off-topic.
I know of some type of bush-camp where white Afrikaans highschool boys are exclusively invited.
My 17yo brother was invited and he went since the experience is marketed as "unforgettable and a great boost for self-discipline, something you HAVE to do", etc.

According to him this camp is based on some type op old army boot-camp. Throughout the 5 days he was there, in between the army-type drilling and living/surviving in the bush, he was constantly bombarded with propaganda about the Afrikaner that will rise again, that a white government will rule again, that Afrikaners should just believe in God - he will bring "us" back to power, etc, etc.

His stories about what happened there is disturbing, to say the least. Why on earth are there people who take young curious minds and attempt to brainwash them into "rising up" etc? The funny this that they seem to be dropped off at a certain place outside Pretoria and "taken" in a transport truck, covered to obscure outside view, to this 'camp'.

I have a black neighbour and a white neighbour, the white neighbours are a bunch of dutchmen, they play loud music every second night, they even have a disco ball in their living room ffs, they keep me and my wife up at night cursing them with their wild drunken parties etc. meanwhile my black neighbours are the most chilled relaxed ppl, they dont bother anyone and keep to themselves.

in other words give more black neighbours! :)

But i also dont see wats so wrong in having seperate living quarters?!?, if it keeps the peace then so wat, its not like the whites get the best rooms while the blacks stay in the garden shed.

RAU and Wits are similar...
The coloured sit there, indians there, whites there...

Ok this was 4 years ago but im sure its the same now... right?

Tuks is definitely NOT like this. In my 4 years, I've never even sniffed a racial incident. Indians, blacks, whites, coloureds, Asians we all get along perfectly fine.

Big groups of friends comprised of just about every distinct racial group you can think of, people helping each other out with work, studying together, hanging out together, sharing a ride home, you name it we did it together.

People need to remove their heads from their asses and look at others for who they are. Yes, I know this has been mentioned a million times over and I know it will never penetrate the thick layer of some peoples skulls but seriously, looking past colour is what's gonna be the next major step forward.

I never felt uneasy around my friends of different races, there were never incidents of initiation to ridicule certain races, residences were full of SOUTH AFRICAN students (all races), not only that but I think many times students from abroad were also given accommodation.

Free State is a disgrace, finish and klaar.

these sick little f*!ks should be taught a lesson

thank goodness Tuks is far more tolerant than Kovsies....

UCT is awesome. Not even a hint of racial undertones. Not in Res, not on Campus. Just perfect. Although pretty pricey :p

Ya, I agree.
Now my 5th year at UCT and whilst it is not some wonderful bastion of integration, and despite some clique-iness, I have never heard of or experienced any kind of racial incident thus far.

While at UCT and Tuks, never heard of any incidences. However, i did not experience Tuks Res life.

Its shocking that there are students in this day and age resisting residence integration.

Res integration started gaining momentum during my time at UCT. While it certainly was a cultural shock for some students, I never heard of bad incidences developing from those tensions.

I believe the reason UFS has such a massive integration problem is because they go about the country promoting the idea of living with your own 'racially/culturally specified group'. In other words people who tend to go to UFS go for this particular reason. So now they are stuck with a bunch of racists and it is all their fault.

UCT is my pride! Its pretty pricey these days hey! However, the dividends are worth it.

In an institution with a rich diverse and integrated student life, you graduate with more than just a Degree which comes in very handy in everyday working life.

Stuart Sounders built a good foundation for that place and Ramphele managed equality so well. Njabulo started after I left but I have met and chat with him at Alumni functions in Joburg.

During my time (when Koppano was still Driekoppen), there was isolated racism at UCT. Had I known it was a crime, I would had reported my experiences.
