All these options are shaped (or semi-shaped), all with a fair use policy and
various types op caps, from cancellation of service, to a hardcap applied or being trottled.

The general user policy reads more or less as follows:

"You can use as much data as you want. Our uncapped service is designed for someone sitting in front of their computer using the internet as much as they want. It is not designed for computer programs that are setup to continuously download 24/7, 30 days a month. If it is your intention to setup programs to download every hour of the day, every day of the month then these uncapped packages are not for you. We reserve the right to terminate any account whose usage affects our other clients internet experience negatively. We reserve the right to investigate and possibly terminate any account that moves 100s of GBs per month. Our primary concern is for the majority of our clients. If there are individuals that are putting strain on the network through their downloading habits and in so doing affecting our other clients negatively we reserve the right to stop offering them the service."

Quick guide for Dummies (for 1st time installers):

1. You need an analogue telephone line from Telkom @ R131.00 per month.
2. You need this line ADSL enabled @ R152.00 - R413.00 per month (ask for the self install option, which does not involve an installation fee).
3. You need to get data from an ISP to use the ADSL line.
4. You need a Router/Modem which you can get on contract from the ISP's or buy from Prophecy Shop.
5. Enter your username into the Router, enable the line on Telkom's website, and you should be online in abour 30 min.

Excellent thread is excellent :D Thanks!

Had a bit of a laugh when I saw WA though

And that's just reselling IS express accounts, which are not really comparable (as they are throttled)... There are no uncapped options over their own network... at any price.

But I don't see any reason why they don't just resell the new IS uncapped accounts. It would nullify a lot of the criticism that has been directed towards them, and give themselves enough breathing space to formulate a competing/alternative service that runs over their own network.

@OP: I think the image you had works better. Or you could try html formatting. The list is now difficult to read.

Cybersmart does not mention this on their website? I've added it. All info in the post, came from the ISP's own websites. It's formatted but default to text everytime. Image posted on top.

Sorry for going a bit off-topic, but since there is the word (shaped) in the heading:

How does the shaping of accounts (4mbps) differ from Afrihost and Axxess? Or is it exactly the same-- They are just reselling IS accounts?

Oh, btw, Great post! Like how you sums the packages up.

All these offers is somehow shaped, semi-shaped or trottled. IS apparently do the shaping themselves. On unshaped the ratio is 1:1 - 1:5, on shaped its 1:12 - 1:15, to make it sustainable. The obvious more expensive offers are unshaped, but the price clearly shows that.

So whats considered heavy downloads?
If i download say.. 80 - 100 Gigs a month, do you think that is acceptable to the ISPs?
I would probably do the majority of it with a download manager, and in sleeping hours.
How much are people downloading?

Which of those uncap data packages can you pay for pro-rata, if you want to sign up in the middle of the month?

Thanks
