Egypt Policeman killed in Sinai Attack

Militants killed an Egyptian policeman on Friday when they attacked a checkpoint in Sinai with rocket-propelled grenades, security and medical officials said.

Militants, who have stepped up attacks in the restive peninsula since the military's overthrow of president Mohamed Morsi on July 3, also attacked a police station in the town of El-Arish, security officials said.

Gary why the thread merge? They related but not specific to the Egypt unrest.
@Killa you smoking too much of the cheese dude, reading way too much into the sunni Saudi scenario. Its baseless. Saudi is still the US partner in crime.

Gary why the thread merge? They related but not specific to the Egypt unrest.

The Islamist Attacks are directly related to Morsi's Toppling.
But anyway, I thought it best to put everything regarding Egypt into one thread, so I have expanded the Thread Title.

Churchill & Roosevelt were big mates with Stalin when they had a common enemy. When the common enemy was seen off the mutual dislike returned to the fore.

The US and the Saudis all share a common ''enemy''; Iran. That is as far as it goes. They're willing to get along for the sake of containing that one country, but other than that I highly doubt they are big mates.

EDITED: Iran, not Iraq

Ahhhh but they are good mates. The US is Saudis biggest oil customer.
Their common enemy would be Iran more than Iraq.
Saudi King and the US have been buddies since before the 80s and the relationship is still strong.

Of course it related, militants are attacking the Egyptian army. I don't think i am reading too much into this saudi problem. I was convinced al queda was a division of the CIA, i thought al nusra were also a division but when i saw them killing opposition leaders and opposition members i realized the US are many things but they would not send a group in to eat people's hearts, murder civilians and kill the opposition making intervention an impossibility.

Thus my new take on it is the saudis are the ones in syria sending al nursa fighters, they are funding both taliban and al queda and who knows what else they are doing.

I really don't believe and actually i can't believe i never saw it earlier. The US are many things but i just can't see them funding terror groups. Also my 911 theory is a bit changed, still think it could be an inside job but the saudi's are capable of something like 911. I think because of the oil the US had to blame the taliban, how could they attack the biggest supplier of oil or one of the biggest.

Perhaps like japan knew attacking the US would wake up a giant and when their planes rocked up the carriers were not there, big fk up, so perhaps the saudi's wanted to suck america into the middle east.

As i said haldex my views can change based on how i see things.

You contradicted yourself there.
OBL was CIA, that should be common sense by now. Affiliations of AQ and CIA with regards to fighting the Russians is also been proven.
Saudi might be involved in Syria but working for who? Themsleves or the US? Assad is a "friend" of the US.

Doubt the Saudis had anything to do with 911 as far as to plot the attack, even though 8 or 9 hijackers were Saudis.

Common enemy is not iraq, iraq is the play ground for al queda to regroup and so on, the common enemy is iran. Other than that the US is friendly purely because the saudi's play a big role, so they have to be friends, a war with saudia arabia would send the oil price to a ridiculous price over night.

They are more than capable of something like 911 so let's say the inside job theory is rubbish, saudi's are more like to have done it than the taliban. Assad is not a friend of the US, do you think america would be lying about chemical weapons to attack a friend?

Al queda and al nusra are where the saudi's are invovled, how do you think alnusra rocked up sometime in December fully armed with well trained fighters, killing opposition groups and they have become the main opposition to assad.

I do agree with you about the CIA and the US being involved but i can't see why the CIA would help the taliban kill americans in afghanistan, why the CIA would support the killing of americans when they were in iraq. Al queda and taliban have been killing innocent people and american troops for a long time now. Would the CIA really be involved and would the US really fund terror groups that lead to the death of their own soldiers? Would the CIA send in al nusra extremists and heavily arm them? Can't see it.

Did someone hack you account? Seriously now...
Taliban never did 911...
If you think it was the Saudis, the Mossad theory is a much better bet.
So the US wont lie when it comes to their military stuff ups but will defend their military against other attacks and sensationalise the weapons used?:wtf:

No idea who Alnusra is. But i would guess they Lebanese or Jordanian possibly Iranian but Saudi? Nahh....

Rival Rallies to be Held

Backers and opponents of Mohammed Morsi are to hold rival rallies in Cairo on Friday, raising fears of violence over the military's overthrow of the Islamist president.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood group will hold a mass protest in eastern Cairo to demand his reinstatement. The group has denounced Morsi's overthrow as a coup and vowed peaceful protests until its demands are met.

The army this month removed Morsi - the country's first democratically elected president - after millions of Egyptians took to the streets demanding his resignation.

His opponents, mostly liberals, plan to hold a mass rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square to demand that the military-backed interim president amends a road map that includes drafting a new constitution and holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

Dozens have been killed in violence since Morsi's toppling on July 3. More than 50 Brotherhood supporters were killed this week when the army opened fire on protesters outside a building where Morsi is believed to be held. The army said gunmen attacked first.

Gunmen on Friday attacked a police armoured vehicle in the Sinai Peninsula, killing a senior officer and injuring 25 policemen.

I incorrectly said Iraq, it should be Iran.

I would not call them buddies. They are friends for strategic purposes and nothing more. Stalin was Hitler's #1 trading partner. Hitler wouldn't have had the resources to mount an invasion of the USSR without the strong pre-war Soviet-German trade links that were in place. The UK and the US are buddies. They have a common world view (Well, the US says jump and the UK asks how high). The US and the Saudis occupy opposite spectrums but come together for business.

In fact, Saudi Arabia has already turned its attention to the East, with the rise of China, with a view to forming new long-term strategic partnerships. A nuclear project is also on the cards between the two.

http://english.alarabiya.net/en/views/2013/02/22/China-Saudi-Relations-Booming-Trade.html

Today Saudi Arabia remains China’s top partner in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), for eleven consecutive years. Tellingly, the year of 2011 will be remembered as a landmark in China-Saudi relations for; (a) both countries increased their trade by almost 50 percent and managed to achieve the trade volume target ($ 60 bn) of 2015 four years earlier, and (b) for the first time since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, China overtook the U.S. to become Saudi Arabia’s top trade partner, although the US retained their position last year by only a small percentage.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Saudis will reposition themselves if there is a significant shift in global power. After all, it is just good business.

Germany calls for Morsi Release in Egypt

Germany on Friday called for the release of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi amid mounting tensions between supporters and opponents over his overthrow.

"We call for an end to the restrictions on Mr Morsi's whereabouts," a foreign ministry spokesman told reporters.

Morsi is currently being held in a "safe place, for his safety" and has not yet been charged with anything, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry, but military and judicial sources say he may eventually face charges.

No i thought you were talking about iran but not sure, didn't sound right when you said iraq. Well thinking about it and researching it the saudi's and americans are friendly purely because they need each other. I have no idea if they are working together or not. The UK more than likely won't arm rebels in syria meanwhile the US are pushing that red line they lied about. They have not even said anything about the russian and turkish evidence linking the rebels directly to the red line not assad. The west are backing the wrong people in syria. Now this where i get confused, are the US aware of this? Are they aware of extremists killing off the opposition, they must know al nusra are working with al queda and they are the most powerful force in syria.

Alarm bells should be going off. My question, are the US aware of this and will they arm the rebels knowing the facts. Hezbollah said it has 30-50000 troops to protect their borders if needed and iran have said it is ready to help as well. So i wonder if the US will get involved, their lies are now out there for all to see. Al nusra are killing opposition rebels and who knows what else they are doing.

Anyways back to egypt and you can answer me staggy but let's try keep this about egypt :D.

Should be an interesting night, brutal army killing people, sounds like libya and syria but acceptable in egypt.

Not sure what's Germany's input here.

As for Egypt being handled different to Libya and Syria. There's a reason why there's a pyramid on the dollar. :D

US Calls for Release of Ousted Egyptian President

The U.S. is joining Germany in calling for the release of ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki says the United States agrees with the German Foreign Ministry, which on Friday called for a - quote - "end to all restrictive measures considering Morsi."

Morsi was ousted on July 3 by the military following a wave of protests calling on him to step down. The Islamist leader has been kept at an undisclosed Defense Ministry facility since then, but no formal charges have been filed.

Psaki did not elaborate on why the U.S. is calling for his release. She noted that the U.S. has expressed concerns all along about politically motivated, arbitrary arrests of members of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails.

Militants Kill 3 in Sinai Bus Attack

Militants killed at least three people and wounded 17 Monday in an attack on a bus carrying workers in the North Sinai town of Al-Arish, security and medical sources said.

"The bus was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade near Al-Arish airport. Three people died and 17 were injured in the attack," a security official said.

A medical source confirmed the toll, adding that "many of those injuries are critical." The bus was carrying workers from a cement factory.

Senior US Diplomat meets with Interim Leaders

A senior U.S. diplomat held talks Monday with Egypt's interim leaders as well as head of the military in the highest level visit by an American official since the Egyptian army ousted the country's first democratically elected leader.

The two-day visit by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to Cairo comes nearly two weeks after Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown by the military following days of mass protests. Washington has been sharply criticized by both Morsi's supporters and opponents for what each side perceives as support for their rival's position.

Burns met with the military-backed administration led by interim President Adly Manour and Prime Minister-designate Hazem el-Beblawi, as well as army chief and Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

There was no immediate word on the discussions with the interim civilian leaders. But the military said in a statement posted on the army spokesman's Facebook page that Burns and el-Sissi discussed "the recent political developments in Egypt ... and ways to reinforce cooperation" between the two countries.

Burns, the No. 2 American diplomat, is also expected to meet with civil society groups and business leaders during his trip.

Ahead of the visit, the State Department said Burns would stress in his talks in Cairo U.S. support for the Egyptian people and an inclusive democratic process in which all political groups can participate.

A Muslim Brotherhood official said the group does not currently have a meeting scheduled with Burns.
