The VW Amarok Thread

W580 is VW's Special Edition Amarok

Think of it as a Ford Ranger Raptor, for the road...

Volkswagen’s Amarok V6 double-cab has a terrifically loyal following.

As the only V6 turbodiesel double-cab bakkie you can buy, it offers an unrivalled blend of comfort, utility and performance. It's no surprise that most of VW’s Amarok bakkie sales, are delivered to customers with the 3.0-litre V6 engine option and it has scooped the Leisure Double-Cab category title of the #CarsAwards powered by WesBank on numerous occasions.

Unfortunately, the Amarok V6 is being retired in the not too distant future, scheduled for replacement by a new joint-venture Ford/VW bakkie platform in 2022. But that doesn’t mean Volkswagen is ignoring the time-honoured tradition of producing some limited-edition variants, as production starts to taper.

The latest example of this, is the Amarok W580. It's a project initiated by VW Australia to build the best road-going Amarok possible.

Volkswagen plotting (Raptor-based) Amarok R flagship, claims report

A fresh report out of Germany claims Volkswagen is plotting a high-powered Amarok R that will share much with the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor.

The second-gen Amarok is set be produced alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa, from 2022. Signed agreements between the two firms include the production of “a medium pickup truck engineered and built by Ford, for sale by Volkswagen as the Amarok starting in 2022”.

Now, AutoBild is reporting that a “sportier R variant” of the new Amarok is on the cards, with the Raptor set to provide a base. The German publication also released a rendering of what it thinks such a bakkie would look like, which you can see above.

I'm not a big fan of bakkies that's designed as if they belong in the fast and furious movies.

190 kW Volkswagen Amarok V6 arrives as SA's most expensive bakkie!

The high-output 190 kW version of the Volkswagen Amarok V6 has finally hit the market in South Africa, celebrating a decade of the nameplate on local soil.

Billed as the country’s “most powerful double-cab bakkie”, the 190 kW model has now officially reached local VW dealers. Interestingly, its arrival sees the Amarok engine range trimmed to the 132 kW 2,0 BiTDI and this latest 190 kW 3,0 V6 TDI options. The 165 kW version of the six-cylinder unit is thus no more.

The V6 prices released in September 2020 have increased a touch, with the Highline variant now starting at R921 900 and the Extreme derivative at R996 000. The latter is thus the most expensive bakkie in the land, eclipsing the Mercedes-Benz X350d 4Matic Power, which is still available locally from R985 113 despite production having ended.

As a reminder, the 3,0-litre V6 TDI makes 190 kW between 3 000 and 4 500 r/min, along with 580 N.m (on tap from 1 400 to 2 750 r/min). An overboost function pushes peak power to 200 kW for 10 seconds, with drive directed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The result, says the Wolfsburg-based firm, is a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 7,6 seconds and a top speed of 207 km/h. VW claims an average fuel consumption of 9,5 L/100 km.

190 kW VW Amarok: SA's most expensive bakkie

It's taken more than 2 years for the 190-kW Volkswagen Amarok to reach South Africa. Not only does it become the most powerful standard bakkie in SA, but in Extreme spec, the upgraded 3.0 V6 TDI eclipses the outgoing Mercedes-Benz X-Class flagship as the market’s most expensive double cab. Its asking price? A shade under R1 million.

Pricing: Revised Amarok range (Nov 2020):

Amaroks come standard with a 3-year/100 000 km manufacturer warranty, 5-year/90 000 km service plan and 6-year anti-corrosion warranty.

New (Ford-built) Amarok 'won't be an X-Class mistake', says Volkswagen

Volkswagen has promised the new Amarok will be clearly differentiated from the next-generation Ford Ranger on which it will be based.

The second-generation Amarok will be produced alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa, from 2022. Signed agreements between the two firms include the production of “a medium pickup truck engineered and built by Ford, for sale by Volkswagen as the Amarok starting in 2022”.

VW in Australia, however, is confident the new Amarok won’t suffer the same fate as the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, which was based on the Nissan Navara but went out of production earlier in 2020 after flagging sales.

Michael Bartsch, Volkswagen Group Australia managing director, suggested to media outlets such as motoring.com.au the next-gen Amarok would be more than just a rebadged Ranger.

“The short story is that it will not be the same mistake that Mercedes-Benz and Nissan made," he said.

Next Amarok a ‘true Volkswagen’ (not just a rebadged Ford) design boss insists

In June this year Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles made the surprise announcement that the next-generation Amarok bakkie would be built in South Africa by Ford, and using the latter’s platform.

This has certainly been a cause for concern among some fans, given how the Mercedes-Benz X-Class failed to attain a following largely because buyers felt it was too closely related to the Nissan Navara that it was built alongside. The price tag probably didn’t do it any favours either.

However, Volkswagen personnel are insisting that the new Amarok won’t make the same mistake as its fellow German.

To that end, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design head Albert Johann Kirzinger recently told Australian media that the company had sent designers to the Ford Australia design and engineering studio that is developing the next Ranger, with a view to ensuring that it had adequate Volkswagen DNA.

Next-gen Amarok bakkie 'a real beast' and 'true Volkswagen', says exec

A high-ranking Volkswagen executive has promised the second-generation Amarok bakkie will be a “real beast” and a “true” VW, despite being built by Ford.

As a reminder, the next-gen Amarok will be produced alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa, from 2022. The Blue Oval firm is the lead partner on the project.

Albert Johann Kirzinger, who heads up design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, told Australian media outlets such as CarAdvice.com.au his team had been “co-developing” the new version of the bakkie with Ford for the past 18 months.

"We know what our Amarok means to our customers and fans in Australia. And that’s the reason why we are really working hard to have a 100 percent Volkswagen – a true Volkswagen – and not only a rebadged Ford. I want you to rest assured that this Amarok will be a real beast,” Kirzinger said.

I like the amarok, but for that kind of money you could just add a little and buy a Touareg. Or buy an entry level Amarok and get a new golf as a daily run around. These prices are just beyond crazy. Or just buy a ranger XLT, have all the bakkie you need and save the rest.

Here's how many Volkswagen Amarok units were sold globally in 2020

Volkswagen’s commercial vehicles division has released global sales figures – including those for its Amarok bakkie – for what was a tough 2020.

The Wolfsburg-based brand’s commercial division says the “economic downturns and social restrictions” associated with the COVID-19 pandemic saw its sales total fall some 24,4 percent to about 371 700 units in 2020.

Around 52 100 examples of the Amarok were sold globally in 2020, representing a year-on-year decline of some 28,1 percent. Production of the bakkie at the Hannover plant ended towards the middle of the year, although the Argentina factory is still building the Amarok.

What about Amarok sales in South Africa? Well, while we’re missing some mid-year data thanks to Naamsa’s decision to no longer release individual model sales, our figures suggest an average of around 135 units were sold locally each month in 2020.

Price and after-sales service

The Amarok 3.0 TDI V6 Extreme 4Motion sells for R996 000 (before options, January 2021). Included in the price are a 3-year/100 000km warranty and 5-year/90 000 km service plan. Service intervals are scheduled for every 12 months/15 000km.

Verdict

In most ways, the VW Amarok 3.0 V6 TDI Extreme is a more convincing R1-million bakkie than the now-discontinued Mercedes-Benz X-Class ever was. This is quite an astonishing achievement, given the advanced age of the Amarok platform. But is this particular derivative worth more than R100k in outlay compared with, for example, the Ford Ranger Raptor and latest top-spec Toyota Hilux? The answer to that question ultimately depends largely on how desperately you need that extra oomph (perhaps you need to tow sizeable trailers often). Engine aside, the Amarok remains a class-leader in terms of refinement and ride comfort, but it now trails newer offerings when it comes to cabin packaging (rear legroom), features (keyless entry, adaptive cruise control etc.) as well as safety (no rear airbags).

Amarok could become more hardcore

VW might be tempted to offer factory lift kit double-cabs.

As the VW Amarok prepares for retirement, the expectation is that VW might be more given to introducing accessories to keep it relevant until its replacement in 2023.

End of lifecycle upgrades happen as any vehicle matures, in an attempt to keep the product offering valid and competitive.

For those bakkie buyers who desire an Amarok with better off-road ability, without compromising the factory warranty or service plan, there might be change afoot.

Australia has been a huge demand market for Amarok, especially the V6 variant. With very similar climate, terrain and user profile to South Africa, what happens Down Under, is often an indication of what could transpire locally.
