New VW Amarok Dark Label ‘under consideration’ for SA

The new Volkswagen Amarok Dark Label is officially “under consideration” for South Africa. Here’s what we know about this blacked-out bakkie so far…

- New Amarok Dark Label looking likely for SA
- VW filed local trademark application in 2024
- German-spec version features V6 TDI engine

Back in November 2024, after unearthing a trademark filing, Cars.co.za speculated that Volkswagen might revive the “Dark Label” badge in South Africa, with history suggesting the Amarok would be the most obvious recipient. Turns out we were on exactly the right track.

Yes, the Wolfsburg-based automaker recently unveiled the new Amarok Dark Label for the German market. And Volkswagen Group Africa has now confirmed to us that this blacked-out derivative – which is, of course, built locally at Ford’s Silverton plant alongside the closely related Ranger – is “under consideration” for South Africa, though adds that “nothing has been confirmed yet”.

As a reminder, the original Amarok Dark Label was a special-edition double cab based on the first-generation bakkie and debuted in South Africa late in 2018 (though was offered in various other markets earlier, including in pre-facelift guise). While that version used a 4-cylinder engine in Mzansi, the new iteration seemingly upgrades to the 2nd-gen Amarok’s 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 motor.

In Germany, this 6-cylinder engine makes 177 kW (detuned from 184 kW thanks to the Old Continent’s emissions regulations) and 600 Nm, peak outputs that are delivered via a 10-speed automatic transmission. In that market, the Dark Label is based on the Style double-cab variant and can be ordered in Midnight Black metallic, Dark Grey metallic or Bright Blue metallic.

How the VW Amarok’s 4 Engine Options Compare

In South Africa, the Volkswagen Amarok double-cab range includes 4 engine options, each catering to a specific taste. Here’s how the powerplants compare…

In October 2025, Volkswagen Group Africa added a new engine option to its Amarok range. The move, which increased the number of powerplants in the double-cab bakkie line-up up to 4, marked the local debut of turbopetrol power in the 2nd-gen version of the Wolfsburg-based brand’s bakkie.

As a reminder, while the original Amarok was based on a VW platform, the 2nd-gen model has much in common with the “T6.2” iteration of the Ford Ranger. In fact, the Amarok rolls off the same production line as its American cousin at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa’s facility in Silverton.

Of course, this means the latest Amarok’s engines are all sourced from Ford. Customers can decide between turbopetrol and turbodiesel power, with both 4- and 6-cylinder options available.

So, how do these powerplants compare? Here we’ll examine their respective peak outputs, available transmissions and Volkswagen Group Africa’s claimed fuel-economy figures. This information should help you decide which engine is best suited to your needs.

Two VW Amarok Special Editions ‘On the Cards’ for SA – Ranger Raptor Rival Incoming?

Volkswagen Group Africa has confirmed what 2026 looks like for its popular Amarok double-cab package, including a potential Ranger Raptor rival.

Following the news that Ford will make significant changes to powertrain configurations on forthcoming updated versions of the Ranger and Everest, Volkswagen Group Africa has confirmed to us that these changes will, by default, be shared with its Ranger-based Amarok package. As a reminder, the modern Amarok is assembled as part of a technology-sharing agreement between these two brands on the same Silverton production line as the Ranger.

While these changes mean the discontinuation of the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel mill in favour of an upgraded version of the 125 kW/405 Nm 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel unit – now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission – it also means the availability of a new 2.3-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol engine in both the Ranger and Amarok, which, as has been reported, can be tuned to deliver 222 kW and 452 N.m.

Likely to adopt this 222 kW powertrain, Volkswagen has confirmed that a new Amarok Dark Label edition is being planned for South Africa. As the name suggests, and as featured on the Dark Label version of the previous-generation (VW-built) Amarok, this predominantly styling-focused special-edition double-cab adds dark trim, including side mirrors, roll hoops and alloy wheels, with suitably tinted head- and taillamp lenses. The car’s interior will also be suitably unique when compared with the standard model.

Key details of SA-bound VW Amarok Walkinshaw revealed

Volkswagen has unveiled a prototype version of the SA-bound Amarok Walkinshaw edition.

Developed in collaboration with Australian tuning company Walkinshaw Automotive Group, Volkswagen has revealed the Amarok Walkinshaw double-cab bakkie. While the Amarok Walkinshaw, also referred to as the W600 (a nod to its maximum torque figure), has mostly been unveiled, the German marque has yet to whip the camouflage off this edition’s (model-specific) front fascia.

The Amarok Walkinshaw features 3D-printed Walkinshaw badging, black wheelarch cladding, wider mud flaps, and 20-inch alloy wheels – the latter shod in Michelin Sport 4 SUV road tyres. Electrically actuated side steps are fitted as standard. The package also gains dual side-exit exhaust outlets, positioned behind the right rear wheel.

Upgraded suspension comes in the form of new Koni shock absorbers, front and rear, which has been tuned by Walkinshaw. A 22 mm rear sway bar has also been fitted for improved handling characteristics. The 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine’s outputs remain unchanged, with 184 kW and 600 N.m of torque delivered to the road via a four-wheel drivetrain.

VW South Africa has announced when the Amarok Dark Label will launch in SA. Here’s what we need to know about the special-edition model.

In November 2025, we reported that two Amarok special editions are “on the cards” for SA – the latter including the Walkinshaw-tuned Amarok W600 and the derivative you see here, the Amarok Dark Label. Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has now announced when the Amarok Dark Label will arrive in SA.

So, what does the Dark Label package include? Well, for starters, this model gains several black trim finishes for the exterior, including for the side mirror housings, door handles and front bumper. Black sidesteps are also included, while the taillamps have been darkened. ‘Dark Label’ decals run along the sides of the vehicle. The Amarok Dark Label is equipped with a set of 20-inch alloy wheels, finished in matte charcoal paintwork.
