My fav "budget" car is getting an update later in 2016...looking good

"The smallest Volkswagen is becoming yet more colourful and sharper still. In late summer of 2016 the second series of the Volkswagen up! will be launched in Europe - with newly designed body panels, new colours, new wheels, new individualisation options, new equipment, a completely redesigned interior, a new infotainment system and an outstanding new engine that offers a significant boost in performance and torque. Volkswagen presents the new version of the up! to the public for the first time at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The up! has been one of Europe's most successful small cars for five years. In countries such as Germany and the Netherlands it is the number 1 in its segment. However, the VW up! has also enjoyed great success outside Europe, with strong performance in markets such as Brazil, Japan and South Africa."

Notice SA mentioned in press release.

"Every version of the VW up! presented at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show will come with new headlights (with LED daytime running lights as standard), new bumpers, a prominent rear diffuser, newly designed tail lights, new exterior mirror housings with integrated indicator lights, new colours and décors for the dashpad (dashboard styling panel) as well as new seat designs. Just like the larger Volkswagens, the latest up! is now also available with the "Light and Sight" package ("Coming home" and "Leaving home" functions as well as rain sensors). Fog lamps will now also feature cornering lights. Volkswagen is also offering the up! with a multi-function steering wheel and Pure Air Climatronic (automatic air conditioning) for the first time. Pure Air includes an air quality sensor with an active biogenic filter that keeps the atmosphere in the cabin at a consistently high level and prevents pollutants, fungal spores or allergens from entering via the system.

The outstanding new 1.0 TSI engine available in the new Volkswagen up! offers an efficient and engaging drive. This turbocharged direct petrol injection (TSI) delivers a powerful 66 kW/90 PS. The maximum torque of 160 Nm is available from 1,500 rpm. The three-cylinder engine is the first turbo for the up! and the most powerful motor available in the model to date. It delivers truly dynamic performance with a top speed of 185 km/h, and takes just 10 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h. This VW up! even strives to match the driving performance of the first Golf GTI. Its dynamism is paired with high efficiency: 4.4 l/100 km (equating to 102 g/km CO2) mean that the up! 1.0 TSI can cover up to 800 km on a single tank of fuel. The sporting nature of the most powerful new up! is emphasised by the visible exhaust pipe."

New turbo motor sounds good for the Up!

Have to agree. I've never owned a small/hatchback but I can definitely see the appeal of these small cars. Not sure I can make the move though...

Already have a small car, but I could use a turbo boost :D God this thing is so sexy

I drove the current model in Jnb last week. Was quite impressed actually, especially with the seat room, albeit after I have adjusted nobody can fit behind.

The only thing it was missing was a turbo! It feels quite pap especially in josi traffic. I seriously hope to drive the new one soon. As a little run around its great, light on fuel as well. Cant fit much in it though and cant see the actual use for it.

It's meant to be a Euro city car. It was never meant to see a highway. That's it's point. Not for a bunch of idiots in africa to turn into something it wasn't.

It cruises quite comfortably at highway speeds, even at altitude. It'll take a while to get there, sure, but it feels more at home at 130km/h than many cars a class or two erm... up.

Still not what it was ever imagined for.

What you think it may or may not have been imagined for is neither here nor there, really. The question is whether it's capable of fulfilling a general transport role. From personal experience, it is... and it's won enough awards that I think it safe to say my sentiment isn't an isolated one. Want a 'bunch of idiots in Africa' story? Shudder when you remember the TATA Nano was almost brought here...

Yeah, I'll stick with the guys here lapping up that citi golf for as long as y'all did. Oh, and the Ford KA. Discontinued everywhere else in the world years before it arrived here and you lot bought it like it was hot.

Did you ever wonder why the five door up isn't being sold here? It's like PT Barnum never said, yeah?

So only the Go! or QQ for the budget new car buyer?

I dunno. I do know that R150k is way out of reach of the vast majority of the citizens of this country. Meaning that it may well be budget for me or you, but it sure aint a budget option in the big picture.

The Ford KA was built until 2008, and introduced locally in... what... 2006, if I recall. So no, not 'discontinued everywhere else' before being brought here, and it also never sold particularly well. The CITI was VWSA's golden egg laying goose for way too long - we all know that - but I'd still rather be in a CITI than any number of sad excuses for budget cars that've been foisted on us in the last few years.

Why? To protect the Vivo's market; that's not some closely guarded secret. As for PT Barnum... he likely didn't ever say what you're attributing to him, at least not originally. You should check your facts before strapping those stilts to your pony.

I drive the highway daily and its just fine.

Beautiful - one of the few VWs I like. Probably the only car they sell that can be called a "people's car".
