I don't think he's a bad guy. He lost his son. He told Rick that he doesn't want the same thing happened to Rick's son, Carl. He's way too resourceful to be written out of the story. He would be a great ally if he joined Rick's group. The road to DC is not exactly a walk in the park. They need all the help they can get. I think there's a crazy cult group that got Beth and Carol. Maybe they are obsessed with going back to the normal world.
