Hi guys, I need some help. I need to connect a pc which is in a wendy house, outside my house with my crappy telkom router.

So I need about 30 metres of network cable, lol. Where can I get 30m of cable, and what type of cable should I use?

The 2 pc's need to be linked, I don't care about speed that much, as long as the outside pc can access the files on the pc inside and browse the net :)

Any ideas or suggestions would be brilliant, thanks dudes.

I could go wireless, can't I? I'm a dumbass sorry.

Yeah - if there arent too many solid walls in the way and the then wireless might be your answer. :)

Remember - encrypting your connection is advisable unless you want to give your neighbor access too

Sorry guys, I woke up @ 12, I'm not fully risen yet

Got any router suggestions? There is one SOLID wall, and the wendy house walls, will it work?

One Solid wall shouldn't be a problem. At home (and at office for myself) I use Gigabyte Access points/routers ... they by far outperform the netgears the other guys are using in the office, and very easy to set up.

So do you watch all your porn in the Wendyhouse? ;)

Sure you can go wireless, at the nontrivial cost of a few hundred rand that, depending on what you buy, could make it all the way up to a grand. Or, given that this looks like a pretty trivial/non business ;) task, why not just get a length of CAT5e cable 'n a few lengths of conduit and bury the cable in the ground? You can be VERY sure it'll cost you a signficantly smaller amount of (hard won) cash -and that's with hiring the labour to dig the trench! :D

Of course, if money is no object, wireless is cleaner, probably quicker to implement and doesn't involve assaulting your garden!

 GOING WIRELESS.... thats gonna be expensive

its gonna cost you about R100 to let the cable be made for you and if you can make it yourself it will cost you about R40. now wireless will be round about R700-R1000. because you have to buy 2 card and 1 reseaver...so think about the money your about to send yust for file acess;)

If you wan tot go wireless you could always just boost the telkom router's wireless signal with a repeater....

Cool, thanks guys, it seem unanomous, don't go wireless. I don't know the prices of cable, so if I can get it for R100 like you say, that would be brilliant. Where can I get it? I've bought from Sybaritic, I doubt they'll make it for me for R100.

Thanks for the info telkomsuig, a repeater would work fine. Just have to find out if telkom will swop my standard router with wireless :) Lol that would cost nothing, except 2 cards :)

I would also go wired, bury the cable in conduit...

Much cheaper, and you should be able to buy a 30m cable (I reckon buy a 40m just in case) for around R100

Check online, otherwise if you live in the Bedfordview area, theres a shop in the Bedford centre which makes up cable for you, R3 a metre (a tad expensive) and around R2 per each connector.

..yea, in this *specific* case, an (arguably ;) ) valid result.

See now, if you'd said from the beginning where you're at, it'd be a LOT easier to answer this one! :D But seriously, CAT5e really IS dead cheap ..something around R2/m for the solid core stuff (what you'll be using) IIRC. Anyhow, if you're in JHB, call Cablelink - they'll make up/sell stuff to cash customers. If you're anywhere else, look around for your local computer cable supplier outfit; you're pretty much guaranteed of getting a piddling little cable like this out of them pretty cheaply.

..and no, that's not a putdown directed at you: I've done cabling jobs before - even something as small as an 8 point LAN in an office can run to over 500m of cabling for the job!

..maybe you missed the part where I mentioned burying the cable - in conduit? You know, that stuff that'll have a fairly good/MUCH better chance than nekkid cable for withstanding an incoming spade blow? :D

Amen brother, but not nearly as wallet-friendly as some wire!

no, I haven't missed it....you haven't met *my* garden manager either...strong lad in his late 20s, took no prisoners with a number of irrigation cables burried 50cm below, at various places in the garden :D

heh, dude - ONE word: "eish" :D -bdt
He's become quite an accomplished fixer as well, only notifies me nowadays when the "links" are finished :D Only showed him once how to do it and where to find the equipment, accompanied by a barely audible growl

Seems I was wrong, Sybaritic asks about R115 for everything :) I added another 10metre just to be sure, hehe, will probably be a few R more
