The overwhelming early orders pushed delivery wait times to between three and seven months—that's mid-October for the high-end SU7 Max.

While longer-than-ideal wait times are frustrating, it's hard to fault Xiaomi. The company's EV division is still in its infancy, and scaling up production for such a complex product takes time. Still, impatient consumers might need to turn to readily available rivals in China's hyper-competitive EV market, putting pressure on Xiaomi to ramp up its capability as quickly as possible.

So, what makes the SU7 so desirable? Besides its eye-catching design and attractive specifications, the pricing is a big draw. The standard model starts at a very reasonable RMB 215,900 (around €27,900). This undercuts many established rivals while still promising an enticing range of features. In what looks like the world's first SU7 road test, the Chinese automotive outlet Dongchendi suggests the answer is a resounding yes. While the SU7 is unquestionably a powerful EV, the notoriously optimistic CLTC testing regime gave it an estimated range that, if true, would have made the SU7 one of the best EVs out there. The Dongchendi team decided to find out the actual number.

The Xiaomi SU7 isn't just focused on efficiency; it packs a surprising punch under the hood. In 0-100km/h acceleration tests, the SU7 Max left competitors in its rearview mirror, clocking an exhilarating 3.24 seconds. This puts it well ahead of the Tesla Model 3 LR (4.62 seconds) and the Nio ET5 LR (3.83 seconds). In the quarter-mile dash, the SU7's dominance continued with a time of 11.17 seconds, proving this newcomer isn't afraid to flex its muscles.

While lab-measured EV ranges can often be overly optimistic, the Xiaomi SU7 delivered a respectable real-world performance. Xiaomi claims a massive 800 km range on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). In the road test conducted by Dongchendi, the SU7 achieved a still-impressive 643 km. While the XPeng P7 delivered a range even closer to its CLTC rating, this shows Xiaomi's newcomer has enough endurance for those longer journeys.

Xiaomi allows order modification as SU7 faces delivery delays

The huge demand became clear immediately after the SU7's launch when pre-orders surpassed 100,000 in just a few days. While the company initially aimed for a production capacity of around 6,000 vehicles per month, it already requested suppliers increase output to 10,000 cars per month to meet the demand.

To help ease the backlog, Xiaomi offers a unique opportunity to customers who pre-ordered the standard SU7 – a 24-hour window to modify their orders. This option opens on April 19, allowing customers to upgrade their vehicle's specifications or choose different options through the Xiaomi Car App.

The Xiaomi SU7's base version is called Standard model (just under €28,000) and it offers a reasonable 13-16 week delivery window. The Pro version is next and for now you'll need to wait (16-19 weeks). Want the absolute best? The top-of-the-line Max delivers every possible feature, but be prepared for a 25-28 week wait. The 5,000 people lucky enough to snag the limited Founder's Edition, are already taking their deliveries, though.
