The Xperia X1 Thread

hey all

anyone have time to post up a step by step guide on gettin the navigation to work lekker? i have google maps and garmin xt. garmin xst doesnt work at all. google maps puts me somewhere within 2100 metres of exact location. anyone know a good (preferably, not necessarily free) nav software that works nicely?

also, not to be rude, but piesang was the most enthusiastic poster and the creator of this forum. but he has given his phone back. and yet he still posts irrelevant comments derogating the xperia x1. thats not fair...
he actually nearly made me return mine, with his constant criticism. then i decided to listen to positive comments and it seems like the majority of users are happy with the device. i know i am VERY VERY happy.

it just sounds like piesang wants a super computer that can receive calls.thats not the x1.
its a phone with some computing capability. its supposed to crash if you surfing the net, listening to mp3s and answering a call at the same time.

i really dont mean disrespect to piesang. his grandmaster rating means he has stax of experience with these stuff. but dont diss the x1. it has its issues, but its a very good phone, probably the best currently available. i think the phone piesang wants hasn't been invented yet...

and before all you guys shout it out, lemme admit it first. this is my first se phone since the p910i. its my first wm phone. but i am well and truly a SE X1 fanboi. or sould i say a SEX1 fanboi!!! ;)

I'm very happy for you if your phone is fine. It just cant compare with the N96.

I tend to disagree with you there. I have read just about every review google can find and everytime I finish one I am even more disapointed than before. It really seems as if the N96 is a step backwards from the N95 8gb. Sure there are a few new features but these don't make up for the negatives. N95 8gb has faster CPU with seperate 3d accel, better camera, better battery, even the buttons seem better on the n95 8gb. IMO these pretty big features left out,a big WTF to nokia.

I am in teh same situation you were in in regards to what phone to get. It seems there is NO perfect phone out at the moment. All off them have some issues of its own.

Hi guys
I am new to this forum and to this site but I have been following the X1 since it's announcement in FEB!!!!!!!!! And all of its delayed release dates.
Moving on...
Today I went to MTN shop and I got the following details on getting the X1 on contract
On MTN Anytime 350 @ R459 PM with no pay in (This is the one advertised in the MTN Y'ello page).
On MTN Anytime 350 @ R350 PM with a R2599 pay in.
On MTN Anytime 200 @ R200 PM with a R5939 pay in.

I also went to the vodashop and got rough details;
(not sure the contract but the guy said it equivalant to MTN Anytime 200) R310 PM with a R5000 pay in
(not sure the contract- something business) R850 PM with a R4600 pay in

I seem to feel that the MTN deals are better, not sure what you think
Hope I've provided something of a helpful guideline here

Also another thing. I have found this website helpful in that most of the users have the phone ...

Like I said before, if your phone works perfectly then you are lucky. For me the N96 works much better than the Xperia, N95 and N95 8GB. If your opinion is different then so be it. If my Xperia worked great I wouldnt have given it back now would I?

I am currently own an x1 and have been through the OBF issues, and lets be seriously honest it is not a nice thing especially when you have been waiting for the phone for like for ever. But what can you do, if it didnt happen to me it would have happened to someone else:)

I can understand where piesang is coming and he is entitled to say what he likes but i think most of his issues stems from that the phone does not live up to what he built up his expectations to be... the phone was delayed constantly we all know that and it was rushed so it would help sony in there fiscal year results, they could not afford anymore delays. So you can almost expect updates that will only improve the performance of the phone.

As the review states and its the view i take that the X1 is a head above any current smart phone out there... yes you can say its almost identical to the HTC touch pro but for me the x1 has stacks more potential in the future esecpially with the panel system. Theres the blackberry bold, but you cant really compare the 2 you either like black berrys or you dont like them... then there is the N96 and for me I have to agree with brawler it looks like a N95 that has just been smoothed over and been given a price increase!!!

Maybe this argument will change in a years time when the N97 is out, which i think looks exaclty like the X1 but just not WM, we will have to see how that phone turns out... But remember that no phone is perfect and im sure when the N97 comes out people on this forum will have similar problems with that phone as the x1.

All in all the OBF did annoy me but the phone for me feels great in the hand and has all the features and potential i need now and for the next 24 months till i can get a new phone(possibly the x2)!!

tsponge, my advice to you is to try the phone out. use it heavily within the first week to make sure there aren't any faults. if there'snanything you find strange, post the fault up or see if its a common issue. thats what i did. really got to love the phone that way. and thats the only way you get to see how much potential its got...

Thanx masasmal for the help. I am going to get the phone on MTN Anytime 350 with the pay in of R2599 and then only R350 Pm. Are there any deals on maybe another network that are better than this one ?

Nah. Considering the phones price it is quite a good deal.

Wait for the Blackberry Storm guys ... will be in SA early 2009. Vodacom exclusive though.

The black berry storm looks awesome but the reviews are very mixed for the phone.. there are reports it crashes alot and that without the proper keyboard typing emails is not as quick as it could be and i prefer having a keyboard thats why i went for the x1... best of both worlds!!

I have read every review there is and I*wouldn't wait for the Storm, go for the Bold (as I am) or don't bother with Blackberry. If for no other reason than the lack of a physical keyboard (unless you don't type often). Also MTN are apparently also testing the Storm so they might have it too. If it's just Vodacom then it will be a complete rip-off and then there would be no reason at all to consider it.

Tsponge: you won't find a better deal than MTN at the moment so go with them.

Ok guys

I have ordered my X1 on MTN Anythime 350
MTN store recons I can go pick it up in 2-3 days as they have to order it.
I think it's going to take longer :(
Though I do Hope it arrives soon, as I used up all my pocket money on the pay in...Hope it's gonna be worth it.

I wonder if I can use it to replace my Core2Quad Machine....LOL

Thanx everyone for all their help. Will post when I get it

One final question I have about the X1 is about usage.
Besides the usuals - Outlook, Internet, SMS, calling I will be using MXit and listening to music.
Can anyone confirm that this expience will be pleasant. I.e. how well does mxit work on the phone ? and is the music player any good - playlists? is it easy to change songs while browsing the web for example? and lastly what is sound quality like through earphones

Hope this all made sense
