The ZAR Exchange Rate Thread #2

Why is the USD/ZAR doing so well today? ZAR has recovered drastically.

Perhaps due to the supposed ceasefire between Israel and Iran?

edit: Same trend vs the Indian Rupee, so potential end to the war bodes well for emerging market sentiment.

Very unusual, it’s one thing playing around with Americas political system but if Trump manages to make the dollar unattractive that'll bite hard.
"The dollar has lost 10.48% of its value against other currencies on the DXY index, year to date. Currencies usually move against each other in fractions of a percent, so that’s a relatively massive collapse in value. The dollar was down 0.55% this morning, at the time of writing"

On balance what does this mean for the SA economy? In USD, imports in ZAR are theoretically more affordable, external investment into SA in USD less so, exports less attractive; all USD. Oil is up so Feb fuel prices may actually increase (duh). Some company earnings are up (miners) so maybe bonuses in these sectors will be good and tax revenue will increase (but still be squandered 🙃 ). What to expect?

Anything Dollar Denominated becomes cheaper (fuel and other commodities being the big ones)
Anything Rand Denominated becomes more expensive (exports)

This is straight out of Trumps T1 playbook, devalue the dollar and stimulate American exports

Whether he does it intentionally or not I have no idea
