I don't know nearly enough how commodities work hence why I've never invested in this space.

Private sector I'm doing quite good in thou.

Especially with Capitec which I bought back in 2010

I do however want to start a "long term" project, buying real gold.

I would go with ABSA NEWGOLD ETF. No DEBT, No BS (like Lonmin where these companies have shareholders over a barrel)

Nice grantza. You can also buy physical gold thru FNB brokerage account I think but they charge you a fee for storing the gold
Hmmm... keep it yourself and hit any burglars over the head with it? :D
 
Can anybody explain why this had an adverse (and striking!) effect on the exchange rate, or point me to an in-depth analysis?

More idiocy at the top = more money that has to be borrowed/stolen/misappropriated = rand being worth less.
