Yes this is the biggest part of the problem. It would be a relatively small investment for government to fund a local car manufacturer or a local electronics one. Not run it.....just help support private start ups in a meaningful way. Funding, tax free incentives etc.

Ja well, we have missed the boat. We already have low value goods and cars coming in. Hisense for electronics for example and various Chinese car brands like GWM, Gheely and Chery. For a start up South African brand it would be next to impossible to break into those markets now.

At the very least we could let manufacturing companies intent on manufacturing in Africa enjoy big tax and trade incentives here. At least we benefit from the labour and residual industry involved.

I have 40 workers employed in our company. If I want to get rid of a useless \ non-performing one, I can't until they break a labour law and most of the time I have to go through the process of warnings etc etc. All the while this individual may be under performing and I don't get true salary\wage value out of him or her.....

But, here is the kicker - I had a critical employee abscond the whole week last week. We were unable to get hold of him and we suffered delays with fitting schedules. Now we find out he decided to go and work somewhere else. I have no recourse whereas if I fired him, he would yank me to the CCMA.

Now who the hell wants to invest in this country with unreliable labour?

Labour laws are too much burden on manufacturing and mining companies. Is it possible to implement performance based salary/wage? I think it might be solution your current situation.

A friend of my late husband closed his factory and imports the same product from china, selling to the same clients.

He has no labour problems, works a shorter week and makes more money.

The hope should be this gives Incentive for us to produce locally rather than import. In future then to become a net exporter of certain goods. The only thing preventing this is apathy and lack of drive.

I know a Taiwanese guy who owns a factory here producing low end electronics. Two plate stoves and kettles and the likes. Simple stuff to mass produce and yet we still import the majority of it. All it requires is the will and drive but we're too addicted to importing and marking up healthy profits. That's a real inflation driver.

Just because our economy was traditionally one way that doesn't mean we can afford not to adapt.
You mean electrics? Seriously anything more sophisticated that putting in a fuse and we import it. You really think our country has people with the skills and will to turn it into a proper exporting country?

China wasn't 30 years ago. Nor was India 20 years ago. These things all start somewhere due to a competitive advantage. We have one now with the rand at these levels.
A weak rand is not a competitive advantage.

You guys are all sad sacks.

We can export tech too.

Car guard technology. We invented it probably. And we perfected it.

Window washer on street corner tech. A good one too.

Taxi driver technology. Our taxi drivers know that transporting their passengers is important, as is navigating our busy streets while dealing with unreasonable drivers.

That's 3 pieces of tech know how we can export. We can send consultants abroad and sell licenses. We can really score the big USD or GBP.

And of course feather dusters! This indispensable piece of tech which cleans every home. Moving dust from one unsightly location elsewhere.
Light on the wrist too and stylish to boot.

Strike and Demand Tech. Again few have it as well as we do. Our strike consultants can deal with capitalist pig bosses, exploitative governmental CEOs and offer best in class performance. Patent this and export. And send consultants abroad. Big bucks will roll in.

Guess I wasn't that far off the mark...have been using 20:1 for quick conversions for months now...

If we really wanted to coin it we should export weed. It grows likd a .... well ..... weed here.

you don't know your labour laws or have a really incompetent broker. It's really easy to get rid of them but yes they will run to the CCMA. If you are honest about the dismissal, then what is there to worry about? Just get rid of the phuckers once and for all....

The problem is with the CCMA - who refunds me for my time spent there even if I win the case? There is no recourse for an employer at the CCMA whereas the employee gets damages if he/she wins

Does anyone think the rand will recover somewhat in the next month? I need to transfer all my money to Pounds, not sure if I should bite the bullet and do it now or hope it comes back down next month

The rand is so volatile, I don't think anyone can say with certainty.

Days like today I'm glad I didn't jump into the home forex trading craze sometime back. All the news should point to a weaker Rand but there seems to be a rally. With the FED rate increase this year and Greece, I dont see any news coming through showing the flow of cash here.
