As you might have noticed between yesterday and today, as fickle as a pickle, don't hedge your bets, bank when and if you can.

I got paid this morning in USD, converting to ZAR. FML.
Been doing it for the last 5 years. Got over trying to time it. Cash out what you need when you get it and leave the rest offshore.

Over those 60 odd months, the distribution is around 50/50. You win some you lose some. As long as you leave as much as you can offshore, you win in the long run

In my case I can't choose when to cash out, just gets paid to my account each month.

A few months ago it was quite a bit higher, so what you say is true.

And back then we had doom prophets as well.

The ZAR will recover and then it will tank again and it will recover and it will tank again.

We are completely insignificant in a global sense and very little of what we do or our government stuffs up is going to have any impact on the exchange rate.

The world is currently in turmoil and we are just going along for the ride.
Exactly this^
We’re and emerging economy with our currency tied to first world markets. The rand is undervalued and worth around R16/dollar. There’s room to move. Cyril ain’t going anywhere. Watch and see

R19 to the Dollar, here we come....

R22 to the Dollar by end of 2023 is now the new target.

Yep, for me too. Everyone earning in Dollars will be smiling.

Agreed. DXY is showing strength based on recent inflation data, but it will soon peak based on interest decisions, which I don't think will go much further (will be more about how long they maintain levels before rate cuts). Emerging markets and risk assets will start strengthening, and assuming the ANC don't completely burn down the country in the interim, even the Rand will see strength over the next few months.

I've sold a bunch of USD and will re-buy again once things head back towards R17. I might not have gotten the top, but I don't believe we're that far off.

It looks to me that the ZAR weakness still has some momentum.

I plan to cash out about 50% of my US$ holding next week just to fix the gains for now.

Don't the costs of the trade kill the potential profits?
