Theft @ Toyota Fourways

Only one person to blame...

Agreed, it's like leaving your house open while you go away for a weekend and cry when you have been robbed. Still doesn't make it right though. Easy to forget your wallet in your car as an example. Mine is always under the driver seat. I don't have cash in it though. Just my cards and my drivers license. Only take it out when I use it.

...but to sign something that says you took all your valuables and then you leave R1000 in the car... Eish... I normally clean my car out the night before I take it in for a service. Next morning wallet is always in my pocket and sunglasses on my head. Everything else is in my laptop/camera bag, which never leaves my sight if it is not locked up.

There's not much you can do. If you left R1000 cash in the car and it's gone, there ain't much you can do. Be more responsible next time. You can only blame yourself.

As others have said... school fees.

Next time just leave some tik or heroin under your seat.

Or a wad of monopoly money.

Dilligaf.

I doubt you'll get anything out of them, car dealers are a horrible breed but a necessary evil to maintain your warranty/maintenance plan. I had my Metallica Black disc stolen out of the CD player during service time not once but twice when I forgot the disc in the player.

Employees dishonesty cover. I just confirmed it with the business insurance guys here. They should also have Internal and External liability on your vehicle.

Really??

Fidelity Guarantee cover.

Not necessarily. We don't have insurance for this. In a lot of cases the claim will be less than the excess that has to be paid never mind the premiums.

@OP - Do you know why the dealers appear to be such knobs about this? It's because people take a chance and people lie. Happens everyday.

"When I gave you my car this morning this dent wasn't here", "I left my iPad under the front seat and now it's gone", "I had R200 in the ashtray" - these are the three latest issues that I have dealt with.

Last year a guy claimed his iPod was stolen, he signed the forms etc saying he emptied his car etc. But as a gesture of good will we offered to replace it because he made a BIG scene. He sent me a pic of the "old" iPod. I found one on Gumtree in better condition than his old one, even had double the capacity. It was going for R1 200. So we gave him the option of us giving him R1 200 or us buying him this one off of Gumtree.

He demanded a brand new iPod. Needless to say he eventually took the R1 200 cause he was taking a chance.

It's probably because I am on the other side of these occurrences but I have very little sympathy for people who have stuff stolen out of their cars when they have already signed to say they have removed their possessions.

Don't get me wrong, it sucks and it shouldn't happen in the first place! We fire a few people per year for theft so we do investigate and check the CCTV etc but it is so difficult to see someone stealing stuff out of a car. We even make our cleaners use clear rubbish bags because we caught someone taking cellphones and iPads off of desks and throwing them in the bin bag, they then throw the bag in the bin outside and collect it after they leave the dealership at the end of the day.

Amen brother!

We tell the customer about 3x to make sure everything is taken out. We mention sunglasses, CD's, GPS's by name.

They also sign where they acknowledge that they have removed everything and that we take no responsibility for any losses.

Still very often we get customers crying about this or that. We simply refer them to the clause and then they can be on their merry way.

There is no way in hell that I can monitor 20 employees that each have full access to the vehicle whilst it is with us. And yes, we do have CCTV cameras all over the place and we use them to solve these "mysteries" when we can.

When a car comes in, we also take a detailed series of pictures inside and out. These include photos of every dent, scratch and chip. This has saved us from customers taking massive chances. We have had some of the loose mats in cars go missing, but then we always checked the pictures and if they were there, we replaced them, no problem.

If you came to me and claimed R1000 went missing from your car, I'd have told you to take a hike to be honest.

There is always two sides to a scenario like this.
