Took my car in for service to Toyota Fourways yesterday, completly forgot my bag in the car including R1000 cash in my wallet, went to fetch car and money was missing. I complained, of course Toyota covers themselves by making you sign a "I have all my valuables removed" document so complaining doesnt help at all. Still, they employ people that are thieves, surely there must be some security policy and a rule to thoroughly search workers? Bad experience overall. Note to self : REMEMBER to remove ALL valuables!

They have insurance for that type of thing. Just make enough stink and they'll replace it. But they have to cover themselves so not every client claims it. Make a huge fuzz, like I said, they have insurance for these kind of things.

I don't think insurance would cover this.

Business insurance does. I think it's called Liability cover, they have a vested interest in your goods they need to be protected against should something happen. I know of such cover, just not sure what it's called.

Just making you sign something doesn't automatically put them within the law.

What evidence does he have that the money was in the wallet? If they cover such cases then everyone can falsely claim.

Would the OP not have to prove that he had left money in his car first, or would the business insurance just accept his statement?

I know they'd cover your goods, as in your car, but I don't think they'd cover cash in a wallet.

Theft is still theft, i would expect if the dealership doesn't want to take responsibility then surely nothing stops you from going to the police and laying a standard claim of theft? At least it is on record then, i mean if i owned a business and things are stolen i would not just /shrug and leave it at that.

I suspect the thing you sign is only so you can't try and claim money from the business itself, but it certainly does not suddenly make the actual crime null and void....

Employees dishonesty cover. I just confirmed it with the business insurance guys here. They should also have Internal and External liability on your vehicle.

Not necessarily. We don't have insurance for this. In a lot of cases the claim will be less than the excess that has to be paid never mind the premiums.

@OP - Do you know why the dealers appear to be such knobs about this? It's because people take a chance and people lie. Happens everyday.

"When I gave you my car this morning this dent wasn't here", "I left my iPad under the front seat and now it's gone", "I had R200 in the ashtray" - these are the three latest issues that I have dealt with.

Last year a guy claimed his iPod was stolen, he signed the forms etc saying he emptied his car etc. But as a gesture of good will we offered to replace it because he made a BIG scene. He sent me a pic of the "old" iPod. I found one on Gumtree in better condition than his old one, even had double the capacity. It was going for R1 200. So we gave him the option of us giving him R1 200 or us buying him this one off of Gumtree.

He demanded a brand new iPod. Needless to say he eventually took the R1 200 cause he was taking a chance.

It's probably because I am on the other side of these occurrences but I have very little sympathy for people who have stuff stolen out of their cars when they have already signed to say they have removed their possessions.

Don't get me wrong, it sucks and it shouldn't happen in the first place! We fire a few people per year for theft so we do investigate and check the CCTV etc but it is so difficult to see someone stealing stuff out of a car. We even make our cleaners use clear rubbish bags because we caught someone taking cellphones and iPads off of desks and throwing them in the bin bag, they then throw the bag in the bin outside and collect it after they leave the dealership at the end of the day.

How about customer dishonesty cover? :D

True :D

Like I said, that is the reason they have you sign that clause thingy. They try and weed the chancers from the real claimers. Just a guess though. It's still a very grey area as the previous poster stated from their side of the fence. I'm sure you get fat chancers every day. But honest people also get taken :(

Hmm look at it from their perspective, you have no proof you had the money in the car, what is to stop every tom dick and harry from claiming money got stolen?

"Gee Whiz don't you know I had 2 million rand i forgot in my car, pay me out in 10's and 20's please".

Was anything else stolen? If not it would look like you are taking a chance
