Anyboody know of a place I can get this from in the Cape Town area?
Also whats the best quality paste I'm a total noob when it comes to this stuff.

Best quality probably artic silver 5.

Though I use the jetart ck4000 which is apparently similar to the artic silver 5 and much cheaper.

Try out prophecy and sybaritic, they should have in stock...normal pc stores usually dont sell thermal paste

I've heard that the arctic silver compound is really good. Online ordering might be the way to go as this is not your typical thing to keep in stock. IIRC some of the thermal compounds / pastes also has a shelf life.

buycomputers.co.za use to stock arcit silver, it is realy good stuff. Give them a call and if I remember correctly you can collect from them they where in plumstead last I bought from them.

Someone mentioned that copper grease works like a charm as well but i havent tried that one yet.

Sorry if this is a bit OT but how big of a difference does the type of thermal paste you use make ?

Yeah - copper grease ('coppaslip', 'neverseize' or similar) works well. High copper content is a good thermal conductor. But also a good electrical conductor, so don't put too much or it will leak out all over your m'board and... , well, you can guess the rest.

Yeah though silver is known to have a higher heat conductivity than copper.

U know what works better than silver? Diamonds!

Jetart got diamond thermal paste which is better than artic silver 5...though I havent a clue where to buy them

Any advice on how to best remove thermal paste from a CPU die? I need to change mobo's

Ideally remove it with a lint-free cloth so that you don't scratch the CPU, though I've found that normal paper towels get the job done (though I wouldn't recommend it) ;)

Thanks. I'm so depressed. Bought a new cpu and hdd. When I installed the components I found that the mobo died!! Now im R2000 poorer. Damn!

toilet paper...most versitile substance in the world lol. Thanks guys, no to cool my E8500

There was some benchmarks a few years ago, and basically unless you were overclocking like crazy and every 0.1degC mattered any aftermarket paste should be much better than the stock stuff.
