October 26...3PM...Sutherland Street...Mthatha... Yep, I was there.
There were no "gridlocks". It was just an average day in Mthatha where no traffic lights work and mainstream traffic pushes through without stopping. Maybe we're just used to less preferential conditions, but I hardly considered that day below the norm.

Cant really compare it to Cape Town, but I was born in Butterworth , went to school there and lived there for 18 years.
We used to go to Umtata to play rugby and cricket, I remember it being clean with nice neighbourhoods, I was there 4 months back and it's become the typical ignored African town, reminded me of Zambia.
Still remarked at all the fancy cars driving slowly trying to avoid potholes.
The Transkei was better off before joining SA.
I remember fileds of mielies and even fruit, now we have nothing - I was home in September, visited the coast - apart from seeing endlesss kids who dont go to school, chatted to the locals and they mentioned that Guv'ment has told them to stop planting anything, they will provide them etc.
Laughed it off - surely the ANC are not that stupid!
Chatted to the local mayor and he also mentioned it!
Chatted to the lady that works for us and her husband who helps me fix up out camp - he also said the same thing!

If that is true, it reflects more on the people living there, than the government. If the government have to "provided" anything after weeks/months, surely any reasonable person would do something to better himself, to at least care for his family? To just exist, with no purpose or will to do anything for yourself, is just plain sad.
It is sad and worrying but it seems that they want them dependent on Government for hand outs which don't actually arrive as promised anyway.
Some are still planting but the vast majority seem to rely on handouts.
I'm sure the newspapers would have caught onto this by now if it is true or maybe they are preoccupied elsewhere as usual.
what's also annoying is the number of children who don't go to school?
They instead follow their mothers around the rocks collecting mussels to sell, that's already dwindling - I mean what future is there for them but poverty.
Alcohol abuse is also rife as well, I now this because as example I paid the chap that helped me do repairs on our camp and he came back the next day pissed out of his mind at 7am in the morning.
There seem to be more sheebeens and taverns than trading stores.

It's about control, empire building. Once you get the people dependent on you & you alone, you are pretty much assured of your position, not?
And for the ANC not being that stupid .. please. Remember them buying votes with food parcels? Look around you, its all about short-term gain with no consideration for the future.
It also says a lot about the quality of voters, but for them it would be like speaking out against their messiah.
Obviously .. the DA is hurting them in the polls and the ANC will do anything to get rid of the opposition.

the learners test book i think also mentions the blowing of the horn for emergencies only, now imagine if that is a law how much money the cops can make from taxis alone.
