Very irritated at the Cape Town airport on 9th July. Bags went through scanner and official grabbed bag and started trying to open it. I told him it was locked and what was the trouble. "Bottles" he said and started prising the catch open. I asked to have the bag so I could open it for him, but he snatched it away. So I called in a loud voice "fetch the supervisor". He was standing right there pretending not to see anything and asked what the trouble is. So I offered to open the bag for him. With 3 large guys checking me out, I undid the lid and opened the bag. He scratched about and came up with my water flosser, in which you put water to clean your teeth. "Bottle" he shouted, "too big" and waved it around. I said it is not a bottle, but a water pump. "No, bottle" he insisted. I turned to the supervisor and asked him to intervene. Next thing this first fellow threw the flosser into the bin, but missed and the device broke apart on the floor. The next thing the lid was closed and I was pushed away and told to leave. I protested to the supervisor that a) this was not a bottle and b) they had now broken it and it was worth R350.00. He said I cannot bring such objects into "their" airport. I told him it was a medical device, but he was not interested. So I wrote down the names of the 3 people involved (they would not let me take their pictures) and wrote an email to the Airports Company, enclosing a photo of the unit, the till slip from Dischem and asked them to pay for it. I received what seems to be a one-line generic reply saying that no record could be found of the event
Hopefully the travel insurance will pay. I was amazed at the boorish behaviour of these people. Two US visitors behind me expressed the opinion in a loud voice that the guard was an uneducated moron
