Think Netflix will kill DStv? Think again

5 years time and you will see a sports only bouquet. That will be the only way DSTV will stay relevant.

Not only sport, but all the other shows that Netflix doesn't offer.

Sure, if you only have Netflix but unlike dstv there are plenty of other streaming options available.

I'm not so sure about this.

Multichoice seem pretty stuck in their ways...

But they also cost, don't they?

I'm not saying that Netflix as a bad option - it is great value for money (especially if you "cheat" and use a US account)... but to say that it has better content than DSTV is a bit of a stretch.

A lot of people say... just use ntx.mx for sport - but that's another ~R350 per month.

Sure, some of them cost money but even if I add up all of my paid services it still comes in well below the cost of DSTV - plus I get to watch what I want, when I want.

That would be interesting... but will probably only happen if the other networks like HBO provide their services globally.

Dont think DSTV will ever give up their cashcow, the sports packages are the only thing they have now. Unless there is a way for netflix etc to get hold of the broadcasting rights, DSTV will always have the upper hand

They eventually will be forced to by the likes of:
Netflix
Hulu
YouTube
Twitch

It has already happened with the music industry. It will happen with video on demand.

DSTV will remain relevant as a content producer, not as a provider.

the sports packages
And what a brilliant job they do. I've been around the planet a bit, and in my experience Supersport is the best by a long chalk. Not because they happen to cover sports I follow, but in the quality and depth of their coverage. Sure it's expensive, but it's also true that our geography has a far smaller viewership to recover costs from than do many northern hemisphere markets.

SA can be proud of Supersport. They are on the ball and offer a superb package. Small example: they grabbed the uberhighworth supersport.com domain before the US networks woke up.

And any ire you have about "sports monopoly" should be directed at the sports owners who sell exclusive rights to Supersport, not DStv.

I hear you. I suppose if you just have Netflix, then one could attempt to make do with the shows that it offers.

As I understand it, if I wanted to stream all the shows that I currently watch and sport, I'd have a bill as follows:

Netflix - R140
HBO Now - R230
ntx.mx (sport) - R340
Amazon Prime - R130

Total = R840, excluding internet costs.

DSTV is brilliant when it comes to sport and if somebody likes sport then its the best route to go. Folks whose brains doesn't lite up like a sun when seeing sport have loads more options. I will go the netflix route.

Hulu is the DSTV killer in my eyes. However bandwidth requirements on Hulu is not so forgiving as Netflix. But they have most of the TV shows that DSTV got, right after it aired in the states. Netflix with Filmefy is for Movies.

Also if DSTV had a package without sport at half the price, I might have given up the above, but then I can use it on many many devices without paying extra......

We have different wants and needs. My two paid subscriptions are for Hulu and Netflix atm as well as unotelly which also gives me access to British television. Sports I do à la carte.

For example paying £6.99/£10.99/£31.99 for a day/week/month worth of sky sports might seem excessive but for the amount of time I want to spend watching televised sport it works out way cheaper.

I've heard this before.
