This is crazy: "When religious belief clashes with science..."

Seriously - that is the stupidest article I have yet read online - and boy do we have some quality gernalizm(sic) in SA.

To quote some of the best:

But a renowned medical doctor, with a lifetime of experience, says people should never look into the sun with the naked eye.

Wow - you don't say! a "lifetime of experience"? Colour me impressed.

Zackey believes that by looking into the burning star, believers will see it spin while an amazing kaleidoscope of colours pour out around the Virgin Mary herself. T

Calling the sun a "star" does not show you are intelligent - it merely shows you once managed to pick up a little tiny piece of science and think its cool.

The doctor, also a world-known inventor, has received the highest honour in the country: the Order of Mapungubwe.

Marvelous piece of substantiation.

He used words like "disaster" and "tragedy", and called for urgent exposure to stop people looking into the sun in the name of religion.

What can one say about a sentence like that?

Anyways - a little blindness is nothing compared to the damage religion does to people's ability to think rationally.
Should have an article like that with a psychologist.

Are these hippies on acid or something?

"amazing kaleidoscope of colours pour out around the Virgin Mary herself" sounds a lot like some form of drug exposure.

and her family are convinced the water supply at their home has turned into a holy oil

In the words of Mr. Loaf - Well hose me down with holy water!!! What utter morons!!!! It is both screamingly funny and terribly tragic, what with the looking-into-the-sun bit.

They say she "speaks in tongues, which only she can understand" - has anyone EVER since the first century understood anyone "speaking in tongues" - what a load of psychodelusional cr@p!!!

yup acid mixed with weed

very nasty combination

i didnt see any mention of the chick who has to have her eyes removed because she did this without protection

Well, on the plus side: If that is true, then we are about to be invaded by the USA. What with GWB's religious fruit "cakieness" and love for oil.

Strangely, when I interviewed Nassif, 37, she did not express any anger towards the teen.

This is a ****ing sad story. I'm dumbfounded. Animals don't look into the sun, for **** sakes.

On The Otherhand People Who Spend A Lot Of Time In The Sun And Looking At The Sun Will Eventually Meet Their Maker...some Truth In It After All Rofl

There is a reason God made it painful to look at bright lights! Stupid people.

Is it true that this girl and her family is charging money for people to come and pray there?

I haven't heard that... anyway, the church has told them to tone down:

The Catholic Church has told Benoni teenager Francesca Zackey to stop blessing pilgrims, after a woman severely damaged her eyes.

On Tuesday, the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, the highest Catholic authority in the region, asked Zackey not to receive pilgrims, not to speak to the media and not to encourage people to look into the sun.

"Several priests spoke to the family to urge them to take time to themselves," spokesperson Father Chris Townsend said.

2000 years of Christianity, 500 years or so since the Middle Ages, arguably the most educated generation in human history, and we have idiots like that running loose.

If you, as an adult, do not know by now that looking into the sun is dangerous, well, then, society has failed.

So the church is going to have an investigation.

The last Catholic investigation, which revolves around sightings of the Blessed Virgin in KwaZulu Natal in 1971, are still going on.

Maybe the results are "imminent".

Don't blame me...
