I'd also self-repair. That R8300 quote is seriously out of whack. I've stripped a Macbook before and replaced the board for a third of that price.

I'd just hook that sucker up to an external monitor and use it like that until it dies

Good plan this - use it as a second machine (Media player?) or stick it in an arcade cabinet with a nice set of controls :)
 
so i eventually popped this thing through to ifix. it was the logic board that was done.

i see though ifix have quoted me a logic board that is for a later model unibody. is this doable?
