2010 MBP and my screen has gone. It flickers like crazy. Those who have owned a commodore 64 will remember the flickering as the tape loaded. That is what I see.

I had a similar issue with a MBP 15" 2007 model - the strange thing was that when I connected it to a external display, the display came back - thereafter it did it again and I connect to the MBP via the screen sharing facility - and the display came back

That sounds like an expensive repair, unfortunately.

It's most likely the inverter that has packed up - you could pick one up off eBay - however, it may be best taking the laptop into someone for repairs, which will be more costly.

Seriously, it can be anything. From drivers / Firmware, loose wires, broken inverter or even the GPU that went wonky. Rather take it in.

Does it do the same when you connect an external display? Does it do the same when you startup from shipping OS X Install DVD - iirc that Mac would still have had one.

If it's just the screen then they are ripping you a new one

Battery & screen can be had for about R2300-R2800

It's not worth it, unless you need it as a portable device. Connect it to an external monitor and use it like that. The 8.5K can be used toward a new MBP/MBA.

Alternatively import the parts yourself.
