Broadband speed put to the test

13/07/2007 13:02 - (SA)

Cape Town - South Africa only manages fourth position when it comes to broadband speed on the African continent, an online test shows.

The speed test was conducted at Speedtest.net, a broadband connection analysis tool. The site measures the performance of connections in various countries.

According to the site, the top countries in Africa by download speed are Reunion with 1265 kilobits per second (kb/s), Morocco with 1123kb/s, Libya with 629kb/s and South Africa with 626kb/s.

South Africa is then followed by Senegal with 560kb/s, Sudan 512kb/s, Egypt 460kb/s, Namibia 438kb/s, Algeria 416kb/s, and lastly Mozambique with a download speed of 416 kb/s.

Local ISPs, Internet Solutions, Telkom, Verizon and MWEB also feature among the top 10 on the continent.

Internet Solutions is ranked third with a download speed of 1189kb/s, Telkom is at number six with 705kb/s, Verizon SA at number seven with 576kb/s and MWEB at number 10 with 550kb/s.

Moving away from the African continent, Japan is tops with 10008kb/s, Sweden at 7311kb/s, Latvia 6251kb/s, Romania 5548kb/s, Bulgaria 5273kb/s, Netherlands 4906 kb/s, France 4718kb/s.

The United States is placed at number eight with 4695 kb/s, followed by Germany 4592kb/s and Singapore 4542kb/s.

I guess our "broadband" is faster than a cleft stick or a pidgeon?

Wonder what Telkom'll say on this?

"our blahblahblah service blahblahblah fastest blahblahblah cheapest blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah"

I don't think this is KB/s, as in real download speeds, rather line speeds, like a 512kb line...

We don't get any 626KB/s service, 4mb ADSL is only around 500 max.

1265 kilobits;) per second (kb/s), Morocco with 1123kb/s, Libya with 629kb/s and South Africa with 626kb/s.

This is only about 78kbyte/s, which sux.

Makes one wonder if sa is on the same planet or just still in the dark ages.:eek:

This "poll" will be skewed a little...I ran it a few times on our University connection :P

Now THIS is more like it!

World's fastest internet connection unveiled

Ian Gilfillan 13 July 2007 at 11h54

Sigbritt Löthberg is no ordinary 75 year-old. From Karlstad in Sweden, the mother of Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg is the recipient of the world's fastest residential internet connection.

Her home has been supplied with a 40 Gbps internet connection, over 10 000 times faster than the 4Mbps which is the fastest connection available in South Africa.

Sigbritt has never owned a computer until now, and the connection, arranged by her son and the local council's network arm, aims to persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections, as well as demonstrating how to build low-cost high capacity lines over long distances.

With the bandwidth available, Sigbritt would be able to download a full high definition DVD in just two seconds.
The connection makes use of a new modulation technique which allows data to be transferred between two routers up to 2,000 kilometres apart, with no intermediary transponders. In theory the distance could be unlimited as long as the fibre is in place.
