1) I have a router which could very easily be set up to connect to an ADSL account and provide access for all the PC's on my local LAN. THis router then would also provide firewall protection for my complete LAN.
2) I have an Easynews account where I can download 30gigabytes per month for less than 10$ per month at full speed ie +-400 kilobytes per second and have 270 gigs available on my account currently.
3) Unfortunately, I am too poor to buy unlimited, unshaped bandwidth and even shaped options such as the 30gb is far too expensive.
So this is what I currently do:
a) My router works in bridge mode, thus I have to run firewall software on the each PC in my Lan. Each PC has access to two accounts from Web Africa( thank God they allow simultaneous logins. These are a IS local account and the normal 10gb SAIX account. I had to set up RASPPOE on each computer, regardless of whether it runs XP or not. to be able to run two sessions at one time. I have to run Routesentry on each computer. ( I was too dumb to set up the ICS so that routesentry could run on the Lan)
b) I download files from the IS news server to save on the international bandwidth, which runs currently at a whopping speed of 8 kbytes/s. A smallish download could take all day, whereas the same file from easynews would have taken < 30 minutes.
c) My email sending rquires another program Autoroute SMTP to ensure that I do not get the dreaded relay error
d) I play online games on my Xbox and I am currently considering an unshaped account of +- 1 gbyte per month. However if I use XBOX live to download demo's etc, I must consider to rather change my account details to my shaped account because shaped bandwidth is that much cheaper.
So what have I achieved now - a quagmire of different connections where a single connection on my router should have been enough to cater for all my needs in any decent environment with decent pricing.
What a joke!
